[Blueprint servercloud-r-cloudarchive] Ubuntu Cloud Archive - Next Steps

2012-11-05 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:
+
+ Lenora wants to deploy OpenStack Grizzly prior to release for pre-
+ upgrade testing; she is able to easily identify the cloud archive
+ testing PPA and milestone pockets and make use of them in her testing
+ environment.
+
+ Ken is currently running OpenStack Folsom on Ubuntu 12.04 from the Cloud
+ Archive; he's notified when the archive for OpenStack Grizzly is
+ released for Ubuntu 12.04 and can then upgrade to the latest and
+ greatest.

  Risks:

+ Incomplete/untimely communication around status of cloud archive.
+ Poor documentation around cloud archive development and release process.
+
  Test Plans:

+ Per-commit testing of the cloud-archive on Ubuntu 12.04 in the OpenStack
+ QA Lab.
+
  Release Note:

[Blueprint servercloud-r-seeded-qa-workflow] Improving QA for seeded server packages

2012-11-05 Thread James Page
Blueprint changed by James Page:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:
+
+ Michael is preparing a SRU for haproxy in raring; he's able to
+ confidently test this package prior to upload because it contains a
+ DEP-8 test which means that even though he does not know the tool that
+ well, it passes a basic level of smoke testing.
+
+ James is able to have confidence that during the development cycle, the
+ server supported packages continue to function due to automated testing
+ of all packages in the server supported seeds on a daily basis and on
+ upload to the archive.

  Risks:

+ Test coverage of packages does not cover all of the supported seeds.
+
  Test Plans:

+ Kinda implicit in this BP.

+ How to do this?
+ - expensive on the public cloud
+ - potentially a lot of storage (i386, amd64 ~ 1TB during quantal)
+ - preserve signatures
+
+ - Ideally we want daily granularity for the tradeoffs
+ - as well as taking manual snapshots
+ - useful for cdimage building (actually a local mirror is already doing this
for ISOs)
+
+ - this is pilot, test it for one cycle (due to resource constraints)
+ - keep a month at a time.
+
+ - dbg symbols is a use-case (well, it is currently stored in a separate
+ archive with
+
+ - backup to launchpadlibrarian (use a smart-proxy as a fallback to
+ launchpadlibrarian)
+
+ - useful for full archive binary bisect
+
+ - avoiding cloud image and iso image skew
+
+ Workitems:
+ - use cases, costs, stake holders, solutions
+ - how much data does it grow?
+ - how is snapshot.debian.org is created?

[Bug 1075234] [NEW] doesn't work with YP/NIS server defined in /etc/yp.conf

2012-11-05 Thread rjc
Public bug reported:

Hi,

ypbind seems to ignore /etc/yp.conf and passes -broadcast to its
options.

/etc/yp.conf:

[begin]
# yp.conf Configuration file for the ypbind process. You can define
# NIS servers manually here if they can't be found by
# broadcasting on the local net (which is the default).
#
# See the manual page of ypbind for the syntax of this file.
#
# IMPORTANT:For the ypserver, use IP addresses, or make sure that
# the host is in /etc/hosts. This file is only interpreted
# once, and if DNS isn't reachable yet the ypserver cannot
# be resolved and ypbind won't ever bind to the server.

# ypserver ypserver.network.com

ypserver mynisserver
[end]

I do have an entry in /etc/hosts for my NIS server.

I checked the the logs and found that -broadcast is being used even though
ypserver was defined in /etc/yp.conf.
The only reference to broadcast I have found was in /etc/init/ypbind.conf.
After hashing BROADCAST=-broadcast in that file it all started working just
fine.

# lsb_release -rd

Release:12.04

# apt-cache policy nis

[Blueprint servercloud-r-lxc] LXC work for R

2012-11-05 Thread Serge Hallyn
Blueprint changed by Serge Hallyn:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:
+
+ Joe wants to deploy a container, but is afraid of root in the container
+ adversely affecting the host. By running the container in a user
+ namespace and with seccomp, the host exposure is greatly reduced.

  Risks:

+ Syslog kernel ns rejected upstream.
+
+ User namespace kernel delta delayed upstream.
+
+ kernel setns() patches delayed or rejected upstream.
+
+ Apparmor lxc-related work delayed.
+
  Test Plans:

+ An lxc testsuite, hooked into the server set of UTAH tests, will be
+ deployed on each package release.
+
+ The lxc api will be leveraged to add more build-time tests.
+
+ (Decide for which features tests make sense and are feasible)
+
  Release Note:
+
+ User namespaces are available as a tech preview. Fully usable Ubuntu
+ containers can be created, sandboxed inside a user namespace. These are
+ not yet recommended for deployment.

[Bug 1075292] [NEW] please install nano package by default on ubuntu template

2012-11-05 Thread Nobuto MURATA
Public bug reported:

please install nano package by default on ubuntu template as well as
vim.

Ubuntu Server with standard install and Ubuntu cloud image have nano by
default, but lxc template doesn't.
nano is set as higher priority than vim in update-alternatives, so nano is used
as editor by default on the systems other than lxc template.

[Bug 1044503] Re: kernel command line is not easily customizable

2012-11-05 Thread Scott Moser
Can someone explain the solution that is being pursued here? I see by
tag as the way to specify kernel parameters, but I dont know what that
really means. I'd like to see a general explanation of how the end user
would use this before an implementation is done that might not be
sufficient to actually solve a problem.
