[Bug 1079032] Re: execs children with SIGCHLD ignored

2012-11-15 Thread Robie Basak
Marked as fixed in Debian 1.7.1.2-1. Since Ubuntu went beyond this
version in Natty (1.7.1.3-1), I presume this is fixed in the current
stable (and LTS release), and am marking it as such.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, then the
relevant procedure is documented here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

However, I'm not sure this bug would qualify under that policy, although
I am not on the SRU team and cannot make that decision.

ypbind will wait for ypserv to reach state running before trying to
start; so if it never reaches that state ypbind hangs for about 30
seconds at which point it should terminate in the pre-start script with
a failure.

[Bug 1065926] Re: can't seem to install keystone on quantal

2012-11-15 Thread James Page
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug in Ubuntu.

Looking at the maintainer scripts I can't see how the dbconfig
integration works; I would expect to find a _DBC_URL_ entry in
/etc/keystone/keystone.conf but its not there - so only the default
configuration would work IMHO.

Also any changes made to configuration files should be done with ucf to
ensure that updates are managed correctly.

Marking 'Medium' as I think this needs a general review;

I think that this issue is that you have an older version of libaio:i386

distributed by Ubuntu.

Please remove libaio before you install libaio-dev - this should resolve

get executed correctly.
I'm curious to know why the problem didn't came up on your servers.

[Bug 1071817] Re: Missing org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSourceFactory

2012-11-15 Thread James Page
Interestingly org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSourceFactory is not
present in the upstream source code; so this actually feels like an
upstream bug as well.

This sounds like a sensible change.

2012-11-15 Thread James Page
Hi Stephane

The dbconfig-common tool which is used to upgrade the database should
deal with the mysql instance having a root password; you might need to
reconfigure the bacula-director package if it has been added since you
first installed bacula:

   sudo dpkg-reconfigure bacula-director-mysql

This should allow you to specify the root password for the database.

You should be able todo this using /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d - see

This can be applied to all packages which use invoke-rc.d in maintainer
scripts to start daemons on install.

[Bug 1078242] Re: juju cannot connect to zookeeper - too many connections (max 10)

2012-11-15 Thread James Page
Zookeeper includes a default limit per client of 10 connections; this is
to ensure that a single rogue client can't kill a zookeeper cluster.

This points to something else bad happening in your environment.

If more than ten connections per client are required for juju, then
maxClientCnxns can be specified in the zookeeper config file on the
bootstrap node - although I don't think this should be done.

[Bug 1077483] Re: automount.8: Macro .RE without .RS; some spelling corrections to the manual

2012-11-15 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This bug is present in Debian too. So it would be best fixed in Debian,
and then Ubuntu will pick it up on the next merge.

Would you mind filing a bug with Debian please?

Even better would be to file this directly upstream, but I'm having
trouble locating an appropriate place for you. The README lists
http://linux.kernel.org/mailman/listinfo/autofs which appears to be
dead, and the package states
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/autofs/v5/ which is available
but has no patch submission information. The Debian maintainer should be
able to help you further with this.

[Bug 1008385] Re: apache-mpm-itk writes wrong process name in /proc/$$/status

2012-11-15 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I was unable to reproduce this using 2.2.22-1ubuntu1.2 - neither on mpm-
prefork, nor mpm-worker, nor mpm-itk.

A difference that might be relevant is that I tried it on a virtual
machine with a -virtual 3.2.0-23 kernel, as opposed to -generic.

It appears that this particular VM won't boot with a -generic kernel, so
I can't easily go further right now.

[Bug 1079212] [NEW] network slow when 2 VMs using virtio net bridged to same pyhs. network device on kvm host

2012-11-15 Thread ITec
Public bug reported:

Versions:
--

Ubuntu: 12.10
linux: 3.5.0-18-generic
bridge-utils 1.5-4ubuntu2
qemu-kvm: 1.2.0+noroms-0ubuntu2
libvirt0: 0.9.13-0ubuntu12

Problem:
--

When bidirectionally transmitting network data from LAN to two VMs on a
KVM host via a bridged network interface, I have got a significant
performance loss compared to transmissions from LAN to only one VM on
the KVM host.

When bidirectionally transmitting to one VM I get about 1000 Mbit/s in one and
250 Mbit/s in the other direction.
When concurrently, bidirectionally transmitting to two VMs I get about 1000
Mbit/s in one and only 37 Mbit/s in the other direction.

Questions:

So what is the bottle neck?
How can I reach full network bandwith?

Machines:
---

ubuntu5 KVM host
ubuntu1 host on same network-switch like ubuntu5
ubuntu4 host on same network-switch like ubuntu5
vm2 KVM virtual machine on ubuntu5
vm3 KVM virtual machine on ubuntu5

Network interfaces:

Performance checks:

Performance_01: ubuntu1 - vm2:
 + 1191 Mbit/s (932 Mbit/s + 259 Mbit/s)

Performance_02: ubuntu4 - vm3:
 + 1209 Mbit/s (938 Mbit/s + 271 Mbit/s)

Performance_03: ubuntu1 - vm2 ubuntu4 - vm3:

 + 481 Mbit/s (466 Mbit/s + 15 Mbit/s)
---
 = 978 Mbit/s (941 Mbit/s + 37 Mbit/s)

Why are Performance_01 and Performance_02 not a bit more like: 2048 Mbit/s
(1024 Mbit/s + 1024 Mbit/s)?
Why does it get even less, when I transfer data from/to two different VMs?
37 Mbit/s is very poor! :-(

[Bug 1072221] Re: ELinks built without lua support

2012-11-15 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I can confirm that there is no dependency on lua, and this applies to
Debian as well, except for some less common architectures
(http://packages.debian.org/sid/elinks). So it does look likely to me
that there is some issue at build time.

I tried rebuilding with after a ./autogen.sh, but this didn't seem to
help.

But either way, it looks likely that if this issue is valid then it
affects Debian as well, so it would be best fixed in Debian, and then
Ubuntu will pick it up on the next merge.

Would you mind verifying the Debian case, and if it is affected then
could you file a bug with Debian please?

[Bug 1073478] Re: squid3 does not clean up pid file

2012-11-15 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I can confirm that the logrotate test fails if squid is not running, and
agree that this is a bug.

Unfortunately I can't find a good reference to point to in order to
declare that squid should be cleaning its pid file and that it is not,
although my understand has also always been that daemons should do this
when they can. I've found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/688343
/reference-for-proper-handling-of-pid-file-on-unix and
http://perfec.to/stalepid.html both of which indicate that it is a good
thing to do, but there doesn't seem to be any definitive reference for
this.

I think an easier fix would be to adjust squid's logrotate configuration
to test for the process before calling squid3 -k rotate.

Could you try this as a workaround? In /etc/logrotate.d/squid3, replace
the postrotate line:

test ! -e /var/run/squid3.pid || /usr/sbin/squid3 -k rotate

with:

test ! -e /var/run/squid3.pid || ! kill -0 `cat /var/run/squid3.pid`
2/dev/null || /usr/sbin/squid3 -k rotate

I'm also unable to reproduce your issue. I've tried with 0.61ubuntu2
with LANG=en_ZA.UTF-8.

Could you give us exact steps to reproduce on a fresh 12.04.1 system
please? Have you tried a different system?

[Bug 1077576] Re: /usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed

2012-11-15 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I can reproduce this, but it doesn't appear that this is a bug to me.
The mysql job retries the connection until the daemon is ready, and then
runs any database upgrades that are necessary. So the first one or two
attempts are expected to fail, and so these logged connection errors are
nothing to be concerned about.

Apart from the log messages, is there any behaviour of mysql that you
are expecting that is not working?

Marking this bug as Invalid, as I don't think this error message
represents a bug. If I've missed something or if I am just flat out
wrong, please explain and set the bug status back to New.

I have not changed the settings and fancontrol removed.
Then reported the bug in launchpad and just added data by running

[Bug 1078922] Re: Fan runs unnecessary

2012-11-15 Thread Phillip Susi
If you aren't using fancontrol, then there's no bug here. Without that,
the fans are controlled by the hardware in response to temperature rise.
You have nothing to worry about as far as damage goes as processors are
intended to handle 90-100 C, so even 52 is quite cool. Often times the
system bios will have options to configure how aggressive the fans
should work to keep temperature down, so you may want to try changing
those to keep it quieter.

[Bug 1078530] Re: upstart job fails to start under lxc

2012-11-15 Thread Serge Hallyn
Regarding this being a bug in lxc as well, the failure to write under
/sys is deliberately enforced by the apparmor policy. It can be worked
around by using another apparmor profile (or none, as commented in the
configuration file), but is not recommended - containers should not
change kernel settings.

** Also affects: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu Precise)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Also affects: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu Quantal)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Description changed:

The KSM_ENABLED setting (on by default) for the qemu-kvm job fails under
lxc but the kernel files still appear writable. Thats likely an lxc bug
(either in defaults or device mapping), but there is no need for qemu-
kvm's job to fail if those settings can't be written to IMNSHO.
+
+
+ SRU Justification:
+ 1. Impact: qemu-kvm cannot be installed in containers
+ 2. Development fix: ignore errors writing under /sys in upstart job
+ 3. Stable fix: same as development fix
+ 4. Test case:
+ sudo lxc-create -t ubuntu -n c1 -- -r [precise|quantal]
+ sudo lxc-start -n c1
+ # log into c1 as ubuntu/ubuntu, and 'sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm'
+ 5. Regression potential: legitimate errors writing under /sys (kernel bugs)
+will be ignored.

[Bug 1077838] Re: qemu-nbd -r -c taints device for subsequent usage, even after -d

** Changed in: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu Quantal)

** Changed in: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu Precise)
   Status: New = Triaged

** Description changed:

  Something about qemu-nbd -r -c /dev/nbd0 someimg leaves cruft behind -
  subsequent connections get marked readonly.

This is on quantal, haven't checked precise or raring.

  To demonstrate:
  # use one image
  qemu-img create -f qcow2 /tmp/1.qcow2 100M
  sudo qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd2 /tmp/1.qcow2
  sudo mkfs -t ext4 /dev/nbd2
  sudo qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd2
  # use a second one on the same nbd device, shows that reuse works:
  qemu-img create -f qcow2 /tmp/2.qcow2 100M
  sudo qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd2 /tmp/2.qcow2
  sudo mkfs -t ext4 /dev/nbd2
  sudo qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd2
  # connect an image in read only mode
  sudo qemu-nbd -r -c /dev/nbd2 /tmp/2.qcow2
  sudo dumpe2fs /dev/nbd2 | head -n 3
  sudo qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd2
  # now try to reuse in read-write mode again:
  qemu-img create -f qcow2 /tmp/3.qcow2 100M
  sudo qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd2 /tmp/3.qcow2
  sudo mkfs -t ext4 /dev/nbd2
  # here it goes boom:
  mke2fs 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012)
/dev/nbd2: Operation not permitted while setting up superblock
  # still need to cleanup
  sudo qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd2
+
+ ===
+ SRU Justification:
+ 1. Impact: mounting an nbd device as read-write after doing so read-only
+ will cause the mount to erroneously (and quietly) be read-only.
+ 2. Development fix: have qemu-nbd set the device to read-write when asked,
+ rather than only setting read-only.
+ 3. Stable fix: same as development fix
+ 4. Test case: See above
+ 5. Regression potential: The patch is localized to the handling of read-only
+ flag in qemu-nbd, so any regression should not affect anything else.
+ ===

[Bug 1076286] Re: Puppet agent not correcly configuring facts synch'd from master

2012-11-15 Thread Matthaus Owens
Andrea,

The first example was master and agent on the same machine, so it found the
module in the modulepath without pluginsync. The second example was agent and
master on different machines.
Can you post the output of your puppet.conf and `puppet agent -t --trace
--debug` on the agent? That might help figure out what's going on.

Here is the output from that second run.

[Bug 967815] Re: /var/lib/tftpboot directory permissions destroyed

2012-11-15 Thread C de-Avillez
** Description changed:

Every so often -- in fact whenever a new debian-installer is released
for Precise -- we re-import the distro. In the process, the TFTP boot
  files are regenerated.

Somehow this changes /var/lib/tftpboot permissions on subdirectories and
files. The result is NOT guaranteed to be bad, and it is NOT guaranteed
to affect the same directories and files in the same way.

For example, the last occurence (today) shows only this change:

  55,56c55,56
   drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-03-22 23:13 precise-i386
   drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-03-22 23:13 precise-x86_64
  ---
   d-w---x--- 2 root root 4096 2012-03-28 04:31 precise-i386
   d-w---x--- 2 root root 4096 2012-03-28 04:31 precise-x86_64

Notice the completely hosed permissions on the new directories.

As a result PXE booting may fail (in this case DID fail).

This is a serious issue, impacting automated testing.

  WORKAROUND:

  find /var/lib/tftpboot -type d -exec sudo chmod 755 {} \;
  find /var/lib/tftpboot -type f -exec sudo chmod 644 {} \;

but this is rather ridiculous ;-)

+
+ SRU Justifications
+
+ [IMPACT]
+
+ This bug causes the TFTP boot directories to be unreadable by PXE or
+ TFTP. The change replaces wrong calls to os.umask() by direct open/close
+ calls, with specific permissions. As a result, the program's default
+ umask is not cobblered.
+
+ There is no visible impact on applying this fix elsewhere in the code.
+
+ [TESTCASE]
+
+ 1. On an unpatched running Cobbler, set a script to run 'sudo cobbler sync'
every half hour or so; let it run for a few hours/days
+ 2. meanwhile check /var/lib/tftpboot (or whatever directory the PXE boot
files are written to) for changes in the permissions: find /var/lib/tftpboot !
-perm -444
+ 3. If the 'find' on (3) shows any files -- you reproduced the bug. Follow up
to 4. below; otherwise, go back to 2. and try again
+
+ 4. recover the /var/lib/tftpboot:
+   find /var/lib/tftpboot -type d -exec sudo chmod 755 {} \;
+ find /var/lib/tftpboot -type f -exec sudo chmod 644 {} \
+ 5. apply the update
+ 6. re-run the script/command 'sudo clobbler sync' every half hour or so; let
it run for a few days.
+ 7. repeat step 2. above every so often; you should see *no* files without
read permission being listed.
+ 8. wait the few days.
+ repeat step 2. once more -- no files should be listed.
+ 9. DONE.
+
+ [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
+
+ No regressions potentials have been identified.

[Bug 1079320] [NEW] ssh key not correctly used in ubuntu-cloud oneiric containers

2012-11-15 Thread Serge Hallyn
Public bug reported:

This was reported by Rintcius Blok on the lxc-users mailing list. It
works correctly with precise containers, but not oneiric (on quantal
host). To reproduce:

cat userdata.sh EOF
#!/bin/sh
ifconfig eth0 /ifconfig-eth0
EOF

lxc-create -t ubuntu-cloud -n o -- --auth-key $HOME/.ssh/id_rsa.pub --userdata
~/userdata.sh -r oneiric
lxc-start -n o

Now ~ubuntu/.ssh does not exist, so you cannot
ssh -i .ssh/id_rsa. ubuntu@container-ip-address

Note that /var/lib/cloud/seed/nocloud-net/meta-data does have the ssh
keys.
