+ Dnsmasq sometimes does not resolve DNS names correcty.

- Applications like Thunderbird or tools like ssh rely on working name
- resolution. However, if there never was a working name resolution,
+ Sometimes it seems that if there never was a working name resolution,
dnsmasq never gets to know about the DNS names.

[Bug 998712] Re: domain name completion broken when dnsmasq is used

2013-04-09 Thread Thomas Hood
Arno,

Does disabling NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq fix the problem? (To
disable NetworkManager-controlled dnsmasq, comment out dns=dnsmasq in
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and then restart network-
manager.)

Hypothesis: dnsmasq is given two nameserver addresses. The first
nameserver listed, which is the one always consulted first if dnsmasq is
not used, functions correctly. The second one malfunctions. Dnsmasq
sometimes consults the second one and therefore sometimes returns
incorrect results.

[Bug 1166730] Re: lxc not modified memory.limit_in_bytes

2013-04-09 Thread Stéphane Graber
Your configuration is valid, it's just that free and the other memory
tools don't know how to check the cgroup limit.

If you try to allocate more than your limit in the container, you'll see
that it'll fail as expected once it reaches the quota.

Re: [Bug 1166730] [NEW] lxc not modified memory.limit_in_bytes

2013-04-09 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for your question. This is definately a FAQ.

free reports information it finds in /proc/meminfo. /proc/meminfo does
not reflect cgroup-imposed restrictions.

There is a fuse-based proc overlay filesystem you can use which should
offer a filtered /proc/meminfo ( see
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?viewmonth=201002viewday=forum_name=lxc-usersstyle=nested
) however that isn't really supported.

Upstream kernel developers have so far rejected the idea of filtering
the /proc file results based on cgroup limits. It is recommended
to update the userspace applications to look at cgroup limits instead.

I will mark this bug ad affecting the kernel and mark it wishlist so
that others looking for this info can find it.

If its memory using:

BUT! I can see, into container lxc, what me available ALL host memory.
And I understand that this is not the case. After the threshold of memory not

[Bug 1166841] Re: lxc-create fails if LANG != en_GB.UTF-8

2013-04-09 Thread James Hunt
Adding '-x' to the ubuntu template the problem is with locale-gen:

+ configure_ubuntu /var/lib/lxc/raring/rootfs raring raring
+ rootfs=/var/lib/lxc/raring/rootfs
+ hostname=raring
+ release=raring
+ cat
+ cat
+ cat
+ '[' '!' -f /var/lib/lxc/raring/rootfs/etc/init/container-detect.conf ']'
+ '[' -z '' ']'
+ chroot /var/lib/lxc/raring/rootfs useradd --create-home -s /bin/bash ubuntu
+ echo ubuntu:ubuntu
+ chroot /var/lib/lxc/raring/rootfs chpasswd
+ '[' -z fr_CA.UTF8 ']'
+ chroot /var/lib/lxc/raring/rootfs locale-gen fr_CA.UTF8
lxc-create: failed to execute template 'ubuntu'
lxc-create: aborted

It seems there is a typo in your fr_CA.UTF8 locale. Maybe try with
fr_CA.UTF-8 ?

[Bug 1166841] Re: lxc-create fails if LANG != en_GB.UTF-8

2013-04-09 Thread Serge Hallyn
serge@sergelap:~$ sudo chroot /var/lib/lxc/r2/rootfs local-gen fr_CA.UTF8
chroot: failed to run command 'local-gen': No such file or directory
serge@sergelap:~$ which locale-gen
/usr/sbin/locale-gen
serge@sergelap:~$ sudo chroot /var/lib/lxc/r2/rootfs /usr/sbin/locale-gen
fr_CA.UTF8

Looks like the template needs to specify the full path for locale-gen

[Bug 1166870] [NEW] lxc-clone fails silently

2013-04-09 Thread James Hunt
Public bug reported:

$ sudo lxc-clone -o old -n new
$ echo $?
1
$ sudo bash /usr/bin/lxc-clone -o old -n new
Tweaking configuration
Copying rootfs...
Updating rootfs...
'raring-cloned' created
$

Problem appears to be missing || true in LXC_PATH= assignment in
/usr/share/lxc/lxc.functions:

LXC_PATH=$(grep -v ^# $globalconf 2/dev/null | grep [ \t]*lxcpath[
\t]*=)

The above can fail due to running via 'set -e' so needs to be something
like:

LXC_PATH=$(grep -v ^# $globalconf 2/dev/null | grep [ \t]*lxcpath[
\t]*= || true)

[Blueprint servercloud-r-qemu] QEMU plans for R

2013-04-09 Thread Serge Hallyn
Blueprint changed by Serge Hallyn:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:
  N/A

  Risks:

  None

  Test Plans:

The qrt qemu tests are to be run before every upload.

  Release Note:
  1. The qemu and qemu-kvm sources have been merged. Some of the kvm command
line usage therefore has changed. For instance, '-enable-kvm' must be
specified rather than being implied. (List of changes to come here)
  2. Transparent hugepages are now supported. The performance gains of
hugepages in kvm will be automatically realized when available.

  Notes:

The {qemu-kvm,qemu-linaro}-qemu switch does not require MIR'ing the
binary packages which migrated from qemu-linaro. We can look at that,
but it's low priority unless someone (independently) requires qemu-user
etc in main. The work item was in case somehow it was required for this
switch. As it is not, I dropped the WI.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1029430 shows that vhost_net is not safe
  to be automatically loaded everywhere.

openbios-sparc (and the required cross-compilers) is in ppa:serge-
hallyn/crossc. It is too late in raring to try and push a set of new
  packages however.
+
+ ovm/edk2: there is no support upstream at all for maintaining state
+ (i.e. custom loaded keys) in a file. Do we want to consider during the
+ next cycle developing that?

[Bug 1152809] Re: Suggests tftpd-hpa instead of Recommends

[Blueprint servercloud-r-kdump-tool] Enable kdump mechanism from kdump-tool instead of kexec-tools

2013-04-09 Thread dann frazier
Blueprint changed by dann frazier:

Whiteboard changed:
  User Stories:

  Risks:

  Test Plans:

  Release Note:

  --

The kdump mechanism from the kdump-tool package is more flexible than
its kexec-tool equivalent. It allows for multiple dumps to be collected,
is the mechanism used in upstream Debian and has a configuration file
that let the sysadmin controls some parameters.

It is currently functional on Ubuntu but the documented way of gathering
a kernel dump is to use the 0_kdump initscript delivered by kexec-tools
which package the kernel dump file as an Apport bundle. While this
solution is sufficient on Desktops, it becomes restrictive on
  server/cloud installs.

Rationale: Current kexec-tool kernel dump capture mechanism is too
limitative in a server/cloud environment. Because you only capture last
crash; people want to change mkdumpfile options, have to hack scripts
  vs. conf files.

We might need to consider different use cases for desktop/server if
using kdump-tool. But this might not be bad since we can have a similar
  setup as kexec-tool.

  linux-crashdump
  - needs to be changed to install kdump-tool
  - does it need to install 'crash'? we might not do analysis on same
machine

Goal: Decide on the feasibility of using kdump-tool as default for
  server/cloud installs

  Issues :
what is the current story around kdump with UEFI ?
  - currently disabled if using secure boot
  - but will be re-enabled when we can use signed kexec kernels
Is the server only requirement valid or should we use kdump accross the
board ?
Is usage of apport hooks for kernel dumps useful and/or valid ?

  Need to be considerate of
  - whoopise integration (how is this turned on for servers?)
  - private data reporting (private daisy instance?)

Can server/cloud users upload large amounts of crash data?; need to
  consider sensitive environments, etc.

  Discussion points:
Right now start with x86, long term ensure it works on ARM.
consider how we can reproduce apport behavor with kdump-tools during
discussion.
need to determine use cases for desktop/server for kdump-tool configurations

  Notes:
MIR is not required for kdump-tools as its source package (makedumpfile) is
already in main
+ A simple kexec fails on ARM (Calxeda/Highbank) as of linux 3.8.0-17.27

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-04-09 Thread C Cormier
Could you confirm that your .1 tests were on a freshly booted Guest OS?
Our hardware likely different... but your latencies are close to my Post

I just reproded with 1GB RAM and Single CPU.

Re: [Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-04-09 Thread Serge Hallyn
Quoting C Cormier (1100...@bugs.launchpad.net):
Could you confirm that your .1 tests were on a freshly booted Guest OS?

Yup, it was a fresh boot.

Since the vms are on shared storage, do you have a box you could wire
up running raring, to test more recent qemu?

[Bug 509647] Re: [MIR] lxc

2013-04-09 Thread Seth Arnold
Urgh. sorry for losing track of this bug. I forgot to subscribe after
submitting my comment.

I believe your proposed additional check would be sufficient. I _think_
better might be to destroy the lock pointer in the shared structure when
freeing the object but before unlocking -- preventing other threads from
acquiring the lock once the free path has started.

[Bug 1167073] [NEW] nova-network should increase nf_conntrack_max

2013-04-09 Thread Ryan Finnie
Public bug reported:

We ran into trouble when net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_count was exhausted
by the system default of net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_max (65536). As the
typical use scenario for Nova can easily exhaust that, nova-network
should probably set a more reasonable default, like 2097152.

Version: 2012.2.1+stable-20121212-a99a802e-0ubuntu1.4~cloud0 (from
cloud-archive)

** Affects: nova (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Please open this upstream - using 127.0.0.1 as the visible hostname
would never be sensible IMO.
