Hi Robie, I'm hitting this issue with a Python upgrade script that utilizes python-apt and manual apt/dpkg calls if needed. As test VM I'm using this setup: 1) Installed Ubuntu 12.04.0 (http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso) under VMware Workstation 10 2) Installed all updates 3) Installed open-vm-toolbox and openssh-server In the upgrade script I'm doing roughly these steps: 1) Removed all sources.list and preferences entries and placed a standard sources.list for Trusty (main, restricted, universe and multiverse for trusty, trusty-security, trusty-updates and trusty-backports) 2) Places preferences file which pins repos with origin Ubuntu to 1001 to (helps a lot with upgrading on machines with many PPAs) 3) apt-get clean apt-get update 4) Update of the core package management packages (python-apt, python-apt-common, debconf, apt, apt-utils, libapt-inst1.4, libapt-pkg4.12, dpkg) 5) apt-get upgrade 6) apt-get dist-upgrade ... So I'm not really surprised that you couldn't reproduce this out of the box. ;-) Please let me know if you need further help with this. This patch should be restored as it silences the warning about the open files limit and disable chroot by default. @Jonathan, if you introduced this delta with Debian on purpose and want to have chroot enabled by default, I could try to adapt the auto chroot feature. We can certainly reintroduce this - when I looked at the source package the patch had no explaination on why it was needed in its patch headers and I couldn't see why we should be diverging from what upstream releases. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to unbound in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303088 Title: unbound-checkconf fatal error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unbound/+bug/1303088/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1303756] Re: make lxc-console work non-confusingly by default on touch images
So to repeat what I've said on IRC. There seems to be two ways to deal with that, the ideal one I believe would be to have lxc-console attach to tty0 when the container is backgrounded and lxc-start isn't itself attached to it, however figuring this out isn't currently possible from an API client and it'd probably require a break of both the API and the internal communication protocol so we can store and query that extra state. Alternatively, we could have lxc-console attach to tty0 when lxc.tty = 0 which I believe would cover the Ubuntu Touch use case and shouldn't require any change to the API or internal protocol, it'd just be a matter of having lxc-console query lxc.tty and attach to 0 if lxc.tty == 0. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303756 Title: make lxc-console work non-confusingly by default on touch images To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1303756/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1303692] Re: New upstream version 1.4.1
I found some work on this done in Debian (http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-freeipmi/pkg-freeipmi.git) and by a third party contributor (https://github.com/yanovich/freeipmi-debian). After some investigation, here's a summary of what is required to be done. Some of these items pose regression risk. In highest to lowest order of impact (IMHO): 7, 3, 4, 2, 5, 8b. I tried to upload a (hacked) version to my PPA for others to test, but this FTBFS (see issue 0). 0) My test package FTBFS on the buildds, but does build locally using sbuild. Need to investigate. 1) ipmiseld and ipmi-config are new and need putting into a package. 2) bmc-watchdog.logrotate has been dropped upstream. Does this now need to be carried in packaging, or will logs now grow forever, or does the log no longer exist? 3) Upstream libfreeipmi12 soname bump to 16. This needs an update in debian/control and in symbols file. 4) https://github.com/yanovich/freeipmi-debian/commit/860834b837cf067171d480a59dc73ec3c5f18f2d suggests to me that libipmimonitoring needed a soname bump, but didn't receive one upstream. This needs investigation. 5) Due to this, libipmidetect0 and libipmiconsole2 should also be checked for backwards compatibility. 6) debian/*.symbols need updating (see yanovich's work on Github for an example). 7) nut-ipmi depends on libfreeipmi12 (and libipmimonitoring5). Thus we cannot update a newer freeipmi without a mini-transition (rebuilding nut-ipmi against a new libfreeipmi15). This extends regression risk to nut. nut-ipmi is in main (src:nut). nut-ipmi first appeared in Trusty. 8) Some distribution patches need checking: Ubuntu delta status: a) 0002_excel_when_opening_tmp.patch: applied upstream (checked manually). b) fix-Wunused-result.patch: doesn't apply (no sign of read and write calls). c) dso-linking.patch: probably needs updating, though a build without it seemed OK. Debian delta status: d) d/p/up_typos.patch doesn't apply. 9) If the target is Trusty, then a feature freeze exception needs to be requested from the release team. Will the binNEWs need an archive admin on hand to deal them also? At this stage of the cycle, we'll also need a specific QA plan on this update to mitigate regression risk. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to freeipmi in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303692 Title: New upstream version 1.4.1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freeipmi/+bug/1303692/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1303886] [NEW] [Trusty] Xend managed domains disappear after upgrade
Public bug reported: Upgrading to 14.04 (Trusty) will change the default toolstack to xl. This will cause VMs that have been created persistently (through xm or libvirt) to not be available anymore. [Bug 1235231] Re: plymouth loses output to /dev/console (such as ci-info: messages)
so with this fix being added, we now see some annoying adaditional output, I've filed bug 1303815 to track that. ** No longer affects: cloud-init (Ubuntu) ** Description changed: During early boot, plymouth captures writes to /dev/console. As I understand it, it is supposed to re-play that content later. Whether or not it intends to is not the issue. In our cloud-images (and in other cases) users may write data to /dev/console that needs to be seen on the other side (ie a serial logger or 'get-console-ouptput' api call). See the attached 'my-logger.conf' for an upstart job that simply writes data early in boot to /dev/console. Sometimes data lost is available in /var/log/boot.log, but sometimes it doesn't even seem to make it there. bug 682831 has an attachment 'myhack-init' that does a similar thing but starts outputting by replacing /sbin/init and then calling /sbin/init itself. Related bugs: * bug 682831: lost console output early in boot + * bug 1303815: cloud image boot produces unnecessary output == Original bug report == On precise cloud images, I get a console output line like this: ci-info: eth0 : 1 192.168.122.204 255.255.255.0 52:54:00:7f:d8:ca^M On saucy cloud images, this is missing. ** No longer affects: plymouth-disabler (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to cloud-init in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1235231 Title: plymouth loses output to /dev/console (such as ci-info: messages) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/plymouth/+bug/1235231/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1303893] Re: cron.daily/chkrootkit log filtering needs to include current names for dhcpcd and dhclient binaries
We have found that chkrootkit now complains after each reboot, with a message similar to: -eth0: PACKET SNIFFER(/sbin/dhclient[895]) +eth0: PACKET SNIFFER(/sbin/dhclient[888]) ---[ END: diff -u /var/log/chkrootkit/log.expected /var/log/chkrootkit/log.today ] --- Looking at /etc/cron.daily/chkrootkit, I noticed that there is logic that attempts to avoid such warnings: # the sed expression replaces the messages about /sbin/dhclient3 /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 # with a message that is the same whatever order eth0 and eth1 were scanned sed -r -e 's,eth(0|1)(:[0-9])?: PACKET SNIFFER\((/sbin/dhclient3|/usr/sbin/dhcpd3)\[[0-9]+\]\),eth\[0|1\]: PACKET SNIFFER\([dhclient3|dhcpd3]{PID}\),' \ -e 's/(! \w+\s+)[ 0-9]{4}[0-9]/\1#/' $LOG_DIR/log.today.raw $LOG_DIR/log.today ... but this no longer works as expected, since the exact name of the dhclient' binary has changed. ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #600109 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600109 ** Also affects: chkrootkit via http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600109 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to chkrootkit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1303893 Title: cron.daily/chkrootkit log filtering needs to include current names for dhcpcd and dhclient binaries To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/chkrootkit/+bug/1303893/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

In this case, nova will create neutron ports using the admin client, thus bypassing neutron authZ checks for creating ports on external networks. This patch adds a check in nova to verify the API request has an admin context when a request for an interface is made on a neutron external network. [Bug 1287147] Re: [FFe] juju-core 1.18
1.18.0 supports New and Notable with 1.18.0 https://launchpad.net/juju-core/+milestone/1.18.0 * Support for proxies * Managing authorised ssh keys * Backup and restore the state-server (bootstrap node) * Run arbitrary commands on some or all instances * Use metadata generate-tools instead of sync-tools to generated simple streams metadata * The bootstrap --source option was replaced with --metadata-source * Timeouts for bootstrap are configurable for environments * Bootstrapping the local provider for lxc no longer requires sudo * Juju local provider can use clone for faster LXC * Juju now supports juju-mongodb, a mongodb tuned for juju’s needs * The null provider is now called manual in the juju config. * The destroy-environment command requires the environment name * Juju unset-env * Juju retry-provisioning * Bash completions include flags, machines, services, and units Also...It supports: * Joyent Cloud. It is not a secret, but it is not announced until we write some beautiful documentation. Note that juju 1.17.7 has no support for Joyent. * Charms define default series Charms can define the series they support and which is default. This permits a single charm to support 12.04, 14.04, and 16.04. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to juju-core in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1287147 Title: [FFe] juju-core 1.18 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/juju-core/+bug/1287147/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1287147] Re: [FFe] juju-core 1.18
Daviey - I've updated the original bug report to make things clearer; the only new feature that 1.18.0 introduces is the joyent provider. ppc64el and arm64 have been delivered in 1.17.x releases; HA did not make the cut as its not stable enough yet. ** Description changed: Ubuntu Trusty has been tracking the 1.17.x interim development release series of Juju; this series does not guarantee backwards compatibility but has allowed us to track new features and enable new architectures such as ppc64el and arm64. - The Juju Core team will be releasing 1.18.0 (or 2.0 - version to be - determined) either this week or next which is the next stable series of - Juju; the juju command lines tools should also have backwards - compatibility back to 1.16.x supporting upgrades for older deployments. + The 1.18.0 release of juju-core has been released; its predominantly a + rollup of the 1.17.x series of releases with a single new feature. In addition, the 1.18.0 release will also introduce the following essential release features for 14.04: - 1) HA of Juju state nodes - 2) Full support for ppc64el and arm64 + 1) Joyent Provider + + All other features have been delivered in interim releases. + + The HA state server and VLAN support for MAAS have not made it into this + release.

Re: [Bug 1287147] Re: [FFe] juju-core 1.18
We decided that we should land everything but HA and VLAN work this week in a stable release to minimize the risk that either of those changes could have on overall stability in the release. However, HA and VLAN work is underway, and much of it has already landed, and the first HA support is expected to land in a development release in the next several days.
