Okay. FYI I went ahead and defined my own bridge to let containers
communicate directly with my router's dhcp server, but I've created and
started a new privileged container `pr1` and made sure it uses `lxcbr0`
and not my `br0`. Still, it's possible I'll have to tell `lxcbr0` to
plug into `br0`
From the image we can see that the maas installer is using overlayroot
to allow customisation of the image. It is not handling the new
workdir= parameter which prevents successful mounting of root, and
aborts the boot.

By the way, the release 0.7.6 is ready for packaging, if I am not
mistaken.

Turns out that the /etc/network/interfaces stuff I mentioned before was
a red herring, here is the actual problem.
Without overlayroot the (nfs) root filesystem is mounted at /, and on
reboot/shutdown /etc/init.d/umountnfs.sh will skip that mount point when
unmounting the network file systems
