[Bug 1508466] [NEW] empty monitor, serial, parallel with -curses with TERM=xterm-256color

2015-10-21 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

my (believed default) ubuntu installation has 'TERM=xterm-256color' when
in a gnome-terminal.

when i run 'qemu-system-x86_64 -curses' from that environment, the monitor and
serial and parallel "consoles" do not have anything on them. Example:
  $ TERM=xterm-256color qemu-system-x86_64 -curses
  # hit 'alt-2' you'll nothing.k this should be the monitor
  # you can type 'quit' there blindly and it will do what you asked.
  # hit 'alt-3' and that shoudl be serial console.

to see it working, just try:
  $ TERM=xterm qemu-system-x86_64 -curses
  # hit 'alt-2', 'alt-3', 'alt-4' and see it all working.

Alternatively, running under 'screen' or 'tmux' or 'byobu' will set term
to some other value ('screen') and that will work also.

Easy workaround if you know it, but not if you dont.

[Bug 1508470] Re: sshd wont start for 15.10

2015-10-21 Thread Thomas Schweikle
PS: the bug is reported from a 14.04 system, for a 15.10 system. At the
moment of writing, the 15.10 system is not accessible any more, because
of sshd not running (or no open port for sshd. May be even a firewall
problem).

Seen it on:

- 15.10 -- upcomming

Applied the upstream patch (not yet committed) to the wily qemu package.

[Bug 1507463] Re: OverlayFS: Wrong mnt_id and path reported in /proc in linux-3.13

2015-10-21 Thread oleg
I retested using lxc-1.1.4 from the lxc-stable ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-lxc/+archive/ubuntu/lxc-stable) which I
added to a fresh vm image from the daily-builds, https://cloud-
images.ubuntu.com/trusty/current.

"lxc-start -n trusty_overlay" fails as before, with the same error
message,

ERRORlxc_utils - utils.c:safe_mount:1641 - Permission denied - Failed to
mount /home/ubuntu/test.txt onto
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/home/ubuntu/test.txt
ERRORlxc_conf - conf.c:mount_entry:1731 - Permission denied - failed to
mount '/home/ubuntu/test.txt' on
'/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lxc/home/ubuntu/test.txt'
ERRORlxc_conf - conf.c:lxc_setup:3745 - failed to setup the mount entries
for 'trusty_overlay'

Chris, it would be of interest to see whether you can reproduce the
underlying kernel bug using this script,

#!/bin/bash
fatal() { echo "error: $@"; exit 1; }

echo -e "testing for overlayfs kernel bug in kernels <= 3.17.";
echo -e "(This script does not work for the newer version of overlayfs in
kernels 3.18+)";

mkdir test_dir|| fatal "mkdir test_dir";
sudo mount -t tmpfs none test_dir || fatal "mount tmpfs";
cd test_dir;
mkdir lowerdir upperdir overlayfs;
sudo mount -t overlayfs -o lowerdir=lowerdir,upperdir=upperdir none overlayfs
|| fatal "mount overlayfs";

exec 6> file_tmpfs.txt;
exec 7> lowerdir/file_lowerdir.txt;
exec 8> upperdir/file_upperdir.txt;
exec 9> overlayfs/file_overlayfs.txt;

echo -e "\ncontents of /proc/$BASHPID/fd/ .  A broken symbolic link to
file_overlayfs.txt indicates a kernel bug";
echo
"";
file /proc/$BASHPID/fd/[6-9];

# cleanup
exec 9>&-;
exec 8>&-;
exec 7>&-;
exec 6>&-;
sudo umount overlayfs;
cd ..;
sudo umount test_dir && rmdir test_dir;
#--end of script

Running the script as root, sudo ./script, I get the following output,

  testing for overlayfs kernel bug in kernels <= 3.17.
  (This script does not work for the newer version of overlayfs in kernels
3.18+)

  contents of /proc/1916/fd/ . A broken symbolic link to file_overlayfs.txt
indicates a kernel bug

  /proc/1916/fd/6: symbolic link to `/home/ubuntu/test_dir/file_tmpfs.txt'
  /proc/1916/fd/7: symbolic link to
`/home/ubuntu/test_dir/lowerdir/file_lowerdir.txt'
  /proc/1916/fd/8: symbolic link to
`/home/ubuntu/test_dir/upperdir/file_upperdir.txt'
  /proc/1916/fd/9: broken symbolic link to `/file_overlayfs.txt'

It seems that the kernel bug is causing fd 9 to point to
/file_overlayfs.txt, when it should point to
/home/ubuntu/test_dir/overlayfs/file_overlayfs.txt .

The lxc commit which introduced safe_mount(), which passes fd's as
arguments to mount() is,

CVE-2015-1335: Protect container mounts against symlinks
https://github.com/lxc/lxc/commit/6de26af93d3dd87c8b21a42fdf20f30fa1c1948d

Here is the relevant part of the commit, which creates a file descriptor
and passes it to mount().

+   destfd = open_without_symlink(dest, rootfs);
+   if (destfd < 0) {
+   if (srcfd != -1)
+   close(srcfd);
+   return destfd;
+   }
+
+   ret = snprintf(destbuf, 50, "/proc/self/fd/%d", destfd);
+   if (ret < 0 || ret > 50) {
+   if (srcfd != -1)
+   close(srcfd);
+   close(destfd);
+   ERROR("Out of memory");
+   return -EINVAL;
+   }
+
+   ret = mount(mntsrc, destbuf, fstype, flags, data);

I still think the bug is actually not in lxc. If I take a vivid cloud

[Bug 1490110] Re: package lxc 1.1.3-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100

2015-10-21 Thread Serge Hallyn
The original complaint appears to be:

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of liblxc1:
 liblxc1 depends on libdbus-1-3 (>= 1.9.14); however:
  Version of libdbus-1-3:amd64 on system is 1.8.12-1ubuntu5.

The libdbus version being installed is higher than that.

Note that that dependency is automatically added (it's not in
debian/control).

We could require dbus upgrade to happen before lxc.

[Bug 1508565] Re: maas uses 3.13 (hwe-t) kernel which does not work on IBM power

2015-10-21 Thread Scott Moser
Some data: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12887493/ (same data is below, but
for formatting the paste is nicer).

The problem stated (and generally known) is that hwe-t kernels do not
reliably boot on power8 in powernv ("bare metal" mode).

There are at least 2 possible solutions to this problem:
 a.) fix maas to be able to set a subarch ('hwe-u') for enlistment and
commissioning.
 b.) remove the 'hwe-t' stream data from existance and hope that maas then uses
the 'hwe-u' product in its place.

'a' has been reported as to be fixed in 1.9, and thats great, but that
does not help users for the short term.

For 'b', this is still less than ideal for several reasons:
 1.) hwe-t (3.13) kernels work fine on ppc64 kvm VMs
 If i were a user of maas driving ppc64 kvm VMS (PowerKVM or Ubuntu), then
I'd be quite happy with 3.13/hwe-t which has support until 2019.04 . I'd much
prefer staying on that supported kernel to the "interim kernel upgrade path"
[1]. Ie, If I installed a hwe-u kernel that kernel is only supported for 10
more months (2016.08). If we remove that product, we'll no longer have a way
of installing 14.04+hwe-t.
 2.) If we remove the 'hwe-t' stream, we're essentially deleting a product on
the server side and hoping that maas systems will follow that deletion. I'd
hope that maas doesn't do that, as it would mean a error on the server side
could completely wipe out installable systems on the target. The code i've
written for mirroring streams does not delete products locally unless
specifically told to. So, likely an existing user *still* has to do something
manually to fix this problem.
 3.) its not clear if this would work or not. Small amount of testing would
get us an answer, but not clear yet, and I personally didn't understand how it
happens in code.

[Bug 1386637] Re: multipath shows non-mpath disks as being multipath

2015-10-21 Thread Steve Langasek
The 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.6 version of multipath-tools is available in trusty-
proposed. We have verified that USB disks are no longer being
incorrectly tagged as multipath in this version. We have also corrected
the regression that caused 'multipath -l' to segfault previously. But
we don't have affirmative confirmation that this new version won't cause
regressions in the handling of failover paths, which is a concern
because of the changes to the udev rules.

Can someone with access to the necessary hardware to test the multipath
failover (which according to this bug report requires FC or similar)
please verify that this works with the -proposed version of multipath-
tools?  Edward, Mauricio?

[Bug 1507463] Re: OverlayFS: Wrong mnt_id and path reported in /proc in linux-3.13

2015-10-21 Thread oleg
I retested using lxc-1.1.4 from the lxc-stable ppa
(https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-lxc/+archive/ubuntu/lxc-stable), which I
added to a fresh VM image from the Trusty daily-builds, https://cloud-

"lxc-start -n trusty_overlay" fails as before, with the same error
message,

[Bug 1507463] Re: OverlayFS: Wrong mnt_id and path reported in /proc in linux-3.13

2015-10-21 Thread oleg
Chris, it would be of interest to see whether you can reproduce the
underlying kernel bug using this script,

#!/bin/bash
fatal() { echo "error: $@"; exit 1; }

echo -e "testing for overlayfs kernel bug in kernels <= 3.17.";
echo -e "(This script does not work for the newer version of overlayfs in
kernels 3.18+)";

mkdir test_dir || fatal "mkdir test_dir";
sudo mount -t tmpfs none test_dir || fatal "mount tmpfs";
cd test_dir;
mkdir lowerdir upperdir overlayfs;
sudo mount -t overlayfs -o lowerdir=lowerdir,upperdir=upperdir none overlayfs
|| fatal "mount overlayfs";

exec 6> file_tmpfs.txt;
exec 7> lowerdir/file_lowerdir.txt;
exec 8> upperdir/file_upperdir.txt;
exec 9> overlayfs/file_overlayfs.txt;

echo -e "\ncontents of /proc/$BASHPID/fd/ . A broken symbolic link to
file_overlayfs.txt indicates a kernel bug";
echo
"";
file /proc/$BASHPID/fd/[6-9];

# cleanup
exec 9>&-;
exec 8>&-;
exec 7>&-;
exec 6>&-;
sudo umount overlayfs;
cd ..;
sudo umount test_dir && rmdir test_dir;
#--end of script

Running the script as root, sudo ./script, I get the following output,

  testing for overlayfs kernel bug in kernels <= 3.17.
  (This script does not work for the newer version of overlayfs in kernels
3.18+)

  contents of /proc/1916/fd/ . A broken symbolic link to file_overlayfs.txt
indicates a kernel bug

  /proc/1916/fd/6: symbolic link to `/home/ubuntu/test_dir/file_tmpfs.txt'
  /proc/1916/fd/7: symbolic link to
`/home/ubuntu/test_dir/lowerdir/file_lowerdir.txt'
  /proc/1916/fd/8: symbolic link to
`/home/ubuntu/test_dir/upperdir/file_upperdir.txt'
  /proc/1916/fd/9: broken symbolic link to `/file_overlayfs.txt'

It seems that the kernel bug is causing fd 9 to point to
/file_overlayfs.txt, when it should point to
/home/ubuntu/test_dir/overlayfs/file_overlayfs.txt .

[Bug 1507463] Re: OverlayFS: Wrong mnt_id and path reported in /proc in linux-3.13

2015-10-21 Thread oleg
The following lxc commit introduced safe_mount(), which passes fd's as
arguments to mount(),

CVE-2015-1335: Protect container mounts against symlinks
https://github.com/lxc/lxc/commit/6de26af93d3dd87c8b21a42fdf20f30fa1c1948d

Here is the relevant part of the commit, which creates a file descriptor
and passes it to mount().

+ destfd = open_without_symlink(dest, rootfs);
+ if (destfd < 0) {
+ if (srcfd != -1)
+ close(srcfd);
+ return destfd;
+ }
+
+ ret = snprintf(destbuf, 50, "/proc/self/fd/%d", destfd);
+ if (ret < 0 || ret > 50) {
+ if (srcfd != -1)
+ close(srcfd);
+ close(destfd);
+ ERROR("Out of memory");
+ return -EINVAL;
+ }
+
+ ret = mount(mntsrc, destbuf, fstype, flags, data);

The strace of mount() shows,

strace: mount("/home/ubuntu/test.txt", "/proc/self/fd/16",
0x7ffd4c3f7fdb, MS_BIND, NULL) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)

The mount fails because /proc/self/fd/16, which should point to a file
in overlayfs, has an invalid value.

[Bug 1508428] [NEW] nova image-list failing with SSL enabled on Juno

Public bug reported:

[Bug 1490110] Re: package lxc 1.1.3-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100

2015-10-21 Thread Robie Basak
I also get "ValueError: /usr/bin/python3.4 (deleted) does not exist" by
starting with a Vivid cloud image, installing lxc and juju-local from
the archive, and then do-release-upgrade -d to Wily. So this will happen
to every Juju charm developer on upgrade, I think. No PPA required.

Separate from this I got the original:

initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket
/com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/lxc not found.

when I upgraded my main machine to Wily just now. In fact the

initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket
/com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused

was repeated all over the upgrade. I wonder if this only happens when
the system was previously upgraded from an upstart-running system, and
we have two bugs here?

I think this should be Importance: Critical and needs to be fixed before
Wily release as we don't want upgraders failing just because they were
experimenting with charm development - and this reproduces entirely from
the archive without any PPAs.

[Bug 1490110] Re: package lxc 1.1.3-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100

2015-10-21 Thread Robie Basak
Oh, I'm sorry. In my reproducer the error visible on the screen was
"ValueError: /usr/bin/python3.4 (deleted) does not exist" but apport
reported DpkgTerminalLog with "invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript,
/etc/init.d/lxc not found." so I think they are just one bug.

Re: [Bug 1349949] Re: Juju's mongodb does not need to log every command in syslog

2015-10-21 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
I believe the fix here is in the work to rev to mongo 3.0 or 3.2 in 16.04.

[Bug 1267564] Re: etckeeper with git breaks package upgrades that touch /etc

2015-10-21 Thread Borim
The problem could be that name and email are not configured in git for
the root login. To do it you can do following:

sudo -s
git config --global user.email "y...@example.com"
git config --global user.name "Your Name"

Can you please check if this solves your problem?

Another problem exists with the update manager, which still fails when
name and email are set for root (#1335391).

irqbalance has no need to run in a container.
Its possible it has some value, i'm not completely sure, but it would seem just

right now there is only an upstart job and sysvinit. i suspect that

[Bug 1267564] [NEW] etckeeper with git breaks package upgrades that touch /etc

2015-10-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Robie Basak (racb):

I tried to upgrade Ubuntu 12.04 Precise system to 14.04 Trusty (alpha)
with "do-release-upgrade -d". I had etckeeper installed and configured
to use Git. The upgrade failed at the very end, because etckeepers DPkg
::Post-Invoke hook failed. The reason was that git user.name and
user.email were not configured, but this was not an issue before the
upgrade (i.e. apt/dpkg worked just fine).

It would be nice, if this kind of configuration issue was detected
before the upgrade.

[Bug 1508248] Re: chkrootkit gives false positive ebury

2015-10-21 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

chkrootkit is in universe in Wily so will not receive much attention
now. But I don't really understand your bug report either - you have not
provided steps to reproduce the bug or detailed the difference between
what you expect and what actually happens, so I'm marking this bug as
Incomplete. Once you have provided a complete bug report, please change
the bug status back to New. Then although the Ubuntu Server Team won't
pay much attention to this bug, other volunteers are welcome to use this
bug as a rallying point to try and get to a fix.

[Bug 1508225] Re: tipc tool isn't built in iproute2

2015-10-21 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I see that libmnl-dev is in universe in Ubuntu so it should be
relatively easy to add the build dependency, but we are in final freeze
right now so this may have to wait until the next release.

This bug also should be sent upstream to Debian as our build-depends
line is derived from theirs, and I don't see any reason for Ubuntu to be
different from Debian here.
