[Bug 1514766] Re: smbd crashed with SIGABRT in strlen() while accessing a share from a W7 client
Scratching about to try and find any other reports. There is something going on in https://tracker.zentyal.org/issues/3130 and a handful of their other bugs that looks similar. Zentyal is listed as a drop in replacement for a Microsoft Small Business Server so it sounds likely they it could include Samba. That was only generated from a search for "strlen () at ../sysdeps/x86_64/strlen.S:106 Samba" though so it could be unrelated. A Samba bug also comes up for a later package https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11530 but reading that suggests the strlen search I am doing is too general to find more than general protection faults. So what would "E_md4hash (passwd= p16= entry= ) at ../libcli/auth/smbencrypt.c:78" turn up? That is more hopeful. There is this post http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1607613 that seems to relate to Ubuntu 14.04 as well and contains a similar segment of stack trace in it: No locals. #10 0xb768afb1 in push_ucs2_talloc (ctx=ctx@entry=0x0, dest=dest@entry=0xbfd3b61c, src=src@entry=0x0, converted_size=converted_size@entry=0xbfd3b618) at ../lib/util/charset/pull_push.c:41 src_len = #11 0xb724e574 in E_md4hash (passwd=0x0, p16=p16@entry=0xbfd3b6a8 "") at ../libcli/auth/smbencrypt.c:78 len = 64 wpwd = 0xb7665000 ret = #12 0xb7421898 in create_volume_objectid (conn=0xb82c1ac8, objid=objid@entry=0xbfd3b6a8 "") at ../source3/smbd/trans2.c:3017 No locals. #13 0xb752fbde in vfswrap_fsctl (handle=0xb82c1910, fsp=0xb82ea670, ctx=0xb82df308, function=590016, req_flags=49217, _in_data=0x0, in_len=0, _out_data=0xbfd3b798, max_out_len=64, out_len=0xbfd3b79c) at ../source3/modules/vfs_default.c:1066 Someone else might do a better job of translating the page. Bug #916576 was marked expired in 2013-01-02 but there are some diagnostic requests in there that I can attempt. It also suggests some relation to bug 913809 which lists a huge number of duplicates and two Samba bugs. The Samba bugs mentioned seemed to trail off as unreproducible. I'll leave the related items there for now. I will set my smb.cong log level 5 and provide the output of `sudo testparm -s` as requested in Bug #916576 and leave it there for now. $ sudo testparm -s Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384) Processing section "[printers]" Processing section "[print$]" Loaded services file OK. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem, rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete. If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers to get help for this sort of problem here: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. [Bug 1515068] Re: bcache-tools should be added by installer if system is installed onto bcache device
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I think what you're really saying here is that there is no installer support for bcache. I'd say that this would be primarily a wishlist bug in the installer that you are using, even if bcache-tools needs modifying to add a udeb. Can you please specify which install you are using, and then we can reassign the bug there? ** Changed in: bcache-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bcache-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1515068 Title: bcache-tools should be added by installer if system is installed onto bcache device To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcache-tools/+bug/1515068/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation
AIUI, it isn't appropriate for a package to modify another package's behaviour from under its feet in this way. Debian Policy Appendix G (not formally policy I don't think) says: "Do not attempt to divert a conffile, as dpkg does not handle it well.". Though https://wiki.debian.org/ConfigPackages does talk about this method. Another cleaner approach would be to have your johnny-dep package provide its own configuration file and init script somewhere else, and then depend on a package that provides the nginx binaries but no configuration. I don't know if nginx provides such packages currently, but if changes are required there I'd recommend that they be done in Debian rather than carrying an Ubuntu delta. Up to Thomas though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nginx in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1483923 Title: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nginx/+bug/1483923/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1515463] Re: Broken juju LXC deployments
Well, the string returned by ubuntu-cloudimg-query already requires mangling to be usable with the lxc-ubuntu-cloud template (as we do inside the ubuntu-cloud template). As there are no full cloud images compressed using .tar.xz, ubuntu- cloudimg-query will continue to return .tar.gz and it's up to whatever piece of software currently mangles its return value to the .root.tar.gz equivalent to instead mangle it to .root.tar.xz (as I did in the ubuntu- cloud template). Anyway, as I said, I'll be changing the tar commands so they don't care about the compression algorithm, that should make transitioning much easier. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1515463 Title: Broken juju LXC deployments To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1515463/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Oh yeah, I can see how this is going to be a problem. I'll look at changing the code path to use auto-detected compression rather than specific one. The reason for this change in the first place is that the .tar.gz images will be deprecated in favor for .tar.xz, so I'd recommend JuJu also switch to .tar.xz at some point soon (I don't believe the cloud team has set a timeframe for phasing out tar.gz yet, but it's planned).

[Bug 1515463] [NEW] Broken juju LXC deployments
Public bug reported: I've just tried using juju to deploy to a container with trusty-proposed repo enabled, and I get an error message about 'failed to retrieve the template to clone'. The underlying error appears to be: tar --numeric-owner -xpJf /var/cache/lxc/cloud-trusty/ubuntu-14.04-server-cloudimg-amd64-root.tar.gz; xz: (stdin): File format not recognized; tar: Child returned status 1; tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now; This seems to be fairly obvious, trying to use xz on a tar.gz file is never going to work. The change appears to be from https://github.com/lxc/lxc/commit/27c278a76931bfc4660caa85d1942ca91c86e0bf, it assumes everything passed into it will be a .tar.xz file. This appears to be a conflict between the template expecting a .tar.xz file, and juju providing it a .tar.gz file. [Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation
Regarding the discussion about dpkg-divert: It's inevitable -- I wanna change something in nginx.conf that's not possible to change elsewhere because /etc/nginx/conf.d is only loaded in the http { ... } segment: 2015/11/11 22:29:32 [emerg] 15102#0: "worker_processes" directive is not allowed here in /etc/nginx/conf.d/test.conf:1 I see the point of avoiding it, but it demands changes in the original package to allow other packages to avoid modifying its configuration files.. but it's almost the same problem with user-defined modifications. There should always be room for both these cases. Agreed, no need to patch this in Ubuntu. Should be done in Debian, which I can see would have the same problem. But it seems it will be hard to find consensus about whether such things should be addressed or not!
[Bug 1483923] Re: dpkg-divert breaks nginx installation
I'm going to take the following actions on this bug, and the Server Team is OK'd to say otherwise, since I'm slightly sleep deprived. > Agreed, no need to patch this in Ubuntu. Should be done in Debian, which I can see would have the same problem. -- Benjamin Bach, November 11, 2015, Comment 7 Given that there is no need to patch this in Ubuntu, and this should be done in Debian, I am going to "Won't Fix" this bug here, and suggest that you file a bug against the Debian package and have them fix it there. If they decide to make changes, they'll make it in when I next merge the package from Debian Unstable. This link is Debian's "How to File a Bug" page and can help you get started with filing a bug in Debian against the nginx package for this issue (since it should really be fixed there): https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting > AIUI, it isn't appropriate for a package to modify another package's > behaviour from under its feet in this way. Debian Policy Appendix G (not > formally policy I don't think) says: "Do not attempt to divert a conffile, as > dpkg does not handle it well.". -- Robie Basak, November 11, 2015, Comment #6 Idle hands are the Devil's Playthings, so I went and poked the Debian IRC channels. #debian-mentors also refers to 10.7.4 of the Debian packaging policy - https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch- files.html - which states the same thing in its contents: I'm just going to quote it here for simplicity, with a later point below of what spots I'm specifically referring to: --- 10.7.4 Sharing configuration files If two or more packages use the same configuration file and it is reasonable for both to be installed at the same time, one of these packages must be defined as owner of the configuration file, i.e., it will be the package which handles that file as a configuration file. Other packages that use the configuration file must depend on the owning package if they require the configuration file to operate. If the other package will use the configuration file if present, but is capable of operating without it, no dependency need be declared. If it is desirable for two or more related packages to share a configuration file and for all of the related packages to be able to modify that configuration file, then the following should be done: One of the related packages (the "owning" package) will manage the configuration file with maintainer scripts as described in the previous section. The owning package should also provide a program that the other packages may use to modify the configuration file. The related packages must use the provided program to make any desired modifications to the configuration file. They should either depend on the core package to guarantee that the configuration modifier program is available or accept gracefully that they cannot modify the configuration file if it is not. (This is in addition to the fact that the configuration file may not even be present in the latter scenario.) Sometimes it's appropriate to create a new package which provides the basic infrastructure for the other packages and which manages the shared configuration files. (The sgml-base package is a good example.) If the configuration file cannot be shared as described above, the packages must be marked as conflicting with each other. Two packages that specify the same file as a conffile must conflict. This is an instance of the general rule about not sharing files. Neither alternatives nor diversions are likely to be appropriate in this case; in particular, dpkg does not handle diverted conffiles well. When two packages both declare the same conffile, they may see left-over configuration files from each other even though they conflict with each other. If a user removes (without purging) one of the packages and installs the other, the new package will take over the conffile from the old package. If the file was modified by the user, it will be treated the same as any other locally modified conffile during an upgrade. The maintainer scripts must not alter a conffile of any package, including the one the scripts belong to. --- The specific points I read on this are as follows: - Two packages that specify the same file as a conffile must conflict. *This is an instance of the general rule about not sharing files.* Neither alternatives nor diversions are likely to be appropriate in this case; in particular, dpkg does not handle diverted conffiles well. - The maintainer scripts must not alter a conffile of any package, including the one the scripts belong to. Because I see this, I believe the `dpkg-divert` approach is the wrong way to do it, and therefore this is an invalid approach for this, and not something we need to fix, at least if we stick to Debian packaging policy. But, I'll leave that decision to Debian, since that's outside the scope of Ubuntu, in my opinion. In either case, I am marking this bug down here in Ubuntu as "Won't Fix", and I suggest you file a
[Bug 1515068] Re: bcache-tools should be added by installer if system is installed onto bcache device
Thanks racb. I'd asked in #ubuntu on IRC, and no-one could tell me against which package to file the bug. The problem is with the standard graphical installer from the Ubuntu live disk image. If it is installing onto a bcache'd drive, it should install bcache-tools. I think the installer already handles LVM, encrypted and RAID setups gracefully, and it would be nice if it did the same for bcache. Thanks for reassigning this appropriately. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to bcache-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1515068 Title: bcache-tools should be added by installer if system is installed onto bcache device To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcache-tools/+bug/1515068/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1514845] [NEW] Error in using already defined constants (PHP)
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hello, I have following problem. I am running Ubuntu 15.04, with PHP 5.6.14 by running the following code snippit in terminal I am receiving the concrete results, but if I am running the code from browser the constant first defined in bar.php seems to be temporary overwritten (for the concatenation). So the result of echo BAR_WITH_CONCAT is barBarwith_concat and not foowith_concat. kindly regards Kai //foo.php https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1514845 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to php5 in Ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
