[Bug 1235231] Re: plymouth loses output to /dev/console (such as ci-info: messages)

2013-12-07 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
On a regular trusty laptop with an SSD i did 6 boots (3 reboots and 3 cold
boots), and compared the boot.logs.
My expectation is to have no less than 6 instances of each unique boot
messages, that is not the case:
1 * Starting Bridge socket events into upstart
1 * Starting modem connection manager
1 * Starting Restore Sound Card State
  1 * Starting System V initialisation compatibility
  2 * Starting bluetooth daemon
2 * Starting configure network device
2 * Starting system logging daemon
3 * Starting save kernel messages
3 * Stopping save kernel messages
4 * Starting Bridge file events into upstart
4 * Starting save udev log and update rules
4 * Starting SystemD login management service
4 * Stopping save udev log and update rules
  5 * Starting ACPI daemon
5 * Starting enable remaining boot-time encrypted block devices
5 * Starting Reload cups, upon starting avahi-daemon to make sure remote
queues are populated
5 * Starting Reload cups, upon starting avahi-daemon to make sure remote
queues are populated
5 * Stopping cold plug devices
5 * Stopping log initial device creation

bootlogs attached.

I'm not sure if this is the same or different problem.

[Bug 1255581] [NEW] samba4 - samba transitional packages

2013-11-27 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
Public bug reported:

samba has now switched to samba4. thus transitional packages replaces stanzas
are needed.
I'm preparing the two uploads, but I'd like to temporarly block
proposed-migration such that upgrade paths can be verified before the two
packages (src:samba4 src:samba) are allowed to go in.

[Bug 1206114] Re: Package apache2-prefork-dev broken in Saucy

2013-07-31 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
We are in process of transitioning from apache2.2 to apache2.4.
In addition, apache2.4 is handling debian packaging in a very different way,
thus packaging needs changing of all modules / extensions and webapps.

Please follow guidelines at:
https://wiki.debian.org/Apache/PackagingFor24 to transition your
package.

[Bug 1093918] Re: grub-probe auto-detection fails on raid

2013-07-09 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
This bug's description should be updated as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#SRU_Bug_Template to be
published in precise.

In particular, a minimal test-case to reproduce the problem observe
the fix would be nice. Reading all the comments on the bug report it's
not quite clear to me, how to test this bug. I have access to maxtor
intel fakeish raid controllers if that helps.

[Bug 1031680] Re: check_apt always report 0 critical updates

2013-07-02 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
It's not a security issue, per se, just closely related. It is indeed
bug on ubuntu system and it is ubuntu specific in some ways. We should
provide improved checks by default, and if possible, in an unstreamable
way. I have targeted this bug for saucy, such that hopefully this can be
resolved this cycle.

[Bug 1124384] Re: Configuration reload clears event that others jobs may be waiting on

2013-06-06 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ * The status of blocked events was not preserved, when upstart
+performed stateful re-execution or configuration reload. Thus jobs
+with complex start/stop conditions (one or more and clauses),
+with at least one event emitted before re-exec/reload, may not
+execute when remaining conditions are finally satisfied.
+
+ * Above may prevent certain system to function correctly, and in the
+cases similar to cloud-init instances may even cause failure to
+boot.
+
+ * The fix includes incriminating reference counts on blocked events,
+whilst job configuration is reloaded and fully serialising all
+upstart objects, including blocked events, during stateful
+re-execution.
+
+ * Since previous versions of upstart, do not serialise blocked events
+the upgrade needs special casing. On upgrade upstart will perform
+stateful re-execution, unless runlevel 2 has been already
+reached. Instead upstart, will re-executed at system shutdown. This
+should allow upgrading upstart during early boot of cloud-init
+instances. But do note, that old instance of upstart will still be
+running as init and the running machine will still be affected by
+the bug described here.
+
+ [Test Case]

+ $ sudo tail /var/log/upstart/foo.log
+
+ At the end one should see a timestamp appended in the foo.log.
+
+ * Test stateful re-exec works correctly:
+
+ $ sudo initctl emit -n event1
+ $ sudo telinit u
+ $ sudo initctl emit -n event2
+ $ sudo tail /var/log/upstart/foo.log
+
+ [Regression Potential]

+
+ [Original Bug Report]
+
Under bug 1080841 we made cloud-init invoke 'initctl reload-
configuration' after it wrote a upstart job. This was necessary because
inotify is not supported on all filesystems (overlayfs being the one of
  most current interst).

This seems to be causing upstart some pain, and resulting in cloud-final
  (and 'rc') not being run.

Easy user-data to reproduce the problem is:

  #cloud-config-archive
  - content: |
     #cloud-boothook
     #!/bin/sh
touch /run/cloud-init-upstart-reload # hack, see trunk commit 783
  - content: |
     #!/bin/sh
     echo  $(date -R): user-script run === | tee /run/user-script.log
  - content: |
     #upstart-job
     description a test upstart job
     start on stopped rc RUNLEVEL=[2345]
     console output
     task
     script
     echo  $(date -R): upstart job run === | tee /run/upstart-job.log
     end script

You should (and do on quantal) end up with 2 files written to /run.

I've verified that the same behavior is true on quantal. If you change
cloud-init to notify upstart about a job immediately after it writes it,
then quantal's upstart gets confused also.

  Related bugs:
   * bug 1080841: should reload configuration if an upstart job is added
   * bug 1103881: cloud-final is never executed if upstart is upgraded during
initialization of the image

[Bug 1124384] Re: Configuration reload clears event that others jobs may be waiting on

2013-04-30 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
ppa:xnox/backports has the updated upstart package that has the
following fixes:

* reload configuration always works and all events are preserved
* the postinst script was modified to not execute stateful re-exec if runlevel
2 has not been reached yet

The reason for the latter, is that we still loose events that are
blocking jobs that are not running yet across the stateful re-exec,
because EventJobOperators (aka start_on stop_on conditions) are not
serialised to include progress information w.r.t. their states (e.g.
TRUE or FALSE for each condition to tell apart if it has fired or not
yet).

The above fixes allow to always run reload-configuration, including early boot.
And safeguard against automatic re-execution if upstart package is upgraded
during early boot.

To fix stateful re-execution in early boot, we need to serialise all
objects used by upstart which upstream has avoided to do so far. Also
it's questionable if stateful re-execution in early boot is a desired
requirement.

[Bug 488696] Re: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]

Doh... done =)

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: autofs5
+ [IMPACT]

- This is the error I get in syslog after autofs start. I have some issues
- with autofs not working, and that can be the case.
+ By default installed autofs, fails to parse the default/unmodified
+ nsswitch.conf and hence does not fall back to files stanza. The parser
+ fails if it doesn't find automount stanza in the nsswitch.conf, and by
+ default there isn't one on Debian/Ubuntu systems. The fix is to change
+ the flex parser to accept nsswitch.conf without an automount stanza as a
+ valid configuration file (empty from the autofs point of view) which
+ then makes is gracefully fallback to the files stanza as expected.

[Bug 488696] Re: syntax error in nsswitch config near [ syntax error ]

2012-09-10 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
Currently autofs falls back to reading it's own configuration files, if the
parser did not find automount stanza.
The problem is that the current autofs' parser fails on the default
nsswitch.conf
See: lib/nss_parse.y

Options are:
1) change default nsswitch.conf (not gonna happen see comment #18, see comment
#20 for history which, well, mattered in the past)
2) remove autofs nsswitch.conf parser (not ideal, breaks compatibility with
other distros history see comment #20)
3) fix autofs nsswitch.conf parser
4) make autofs use something that knows how to parse nsswitch.conf properly

I personally would prefer solution #3 and send the patch to debian
upstream. Unfortunately I do not know Yacc to even understand what
./lib/nss_parse.y is doing.

[Bug 1040800] Re: res_config_sqlite should be ported to sqlite3

2012-08-23 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
Right now, it's simply a MOTU Developer initiative. Not a concrete / release
team approved goal.
I am trying to triange and find packages that:
* depend on sqlite2
* have not been ported to sqlite3 OR do not have sqlite3 equivalent packaged

Binary package asterisk-modules depends on both sqlite2 3.

Most of the modules in that package provide both sqlite2 3 versions of
modules where appropriate.

There is: res_config_sqlite module which links against sqlite2 and there
is no res_config_sqlite3 provided.

So if we do decide to drop sqlite2, then there will be loss of
functionality (res_config_sqlite module) with no upgrade path, cause
there is no res_config_sqlite3 module. Hence this wishlist bug to port
that individual module.

[Bug 1032322] Re: Swap space allocation for large memory systems needs improvement

2012-08-20 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

Wishlist: Missing functionality.
* If it is non-trivial to implement, it should rather be written as a feature
specification, see FeatureSpecifications.

It is possible to modify the default recipes, but that will harm the Desktop
installations. [1]
Another possibility is to introduce alternative package partman-auto-server,
which will replace/divert partman-auto recipes.
Or we could push for recipe flavour support in Debian.

I think it will be useful to have a UDS session as part of foundations
or server track to discuss this, choose what needs modification and how
to implement it. Probably all default recipes need a refresh or a
review to make sure they are all still relevant.

[Bug 1016505] Re: CVE-2012-0862: enables unintentional services over tcpmux port

2012-08-17 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
A branch is fine for Quantal.
For previous releases, security updates are preferred to be sponsored with a
debdiff.

[Bug 1032322] Re: Swap space allocation for large memory systems needs improvement

2012-08-02 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
While I would tend to agree, I would say that default settings (e.g.
100% memory) is for the default/majority of systems. If memory on the
machine is 100's of GB or even TBs, custom partman recipes should be
used to tune the machine.

While currently not supported, I would like to see magic factors a keen
to check_mk magic factor for disk space notifications. [0]

[Bug 1016435] [NEW] remove btrfs recommendation

2012-06-22 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
Public bug reported:

remove recommending btrfs

Upstream doesn't recommend it for production use. Btrfs is unstable and
does result in many warnings displayed specifically with CEPH's
workload. Performance degrades over time, under ceph's workload. (see
mailing list cross posts from ceps to btrfs).

14:32 xnox On top of which filesystem is it currently recommended to run
CEPH? btrfs?!
14:32 pmjdebruijn last time we tried btrfs still had issue
14:33 pmjdebruijn we are running it on ext4
14:33 pmjdebruijn already we have a limited usecase
14:33 pmjdebruijn although* (not already)
14:33 pmjdebruijn xnox: stick around and see what others have to say

[Bug 1016673] [NEW] Extra forks on automount initialisation HUP signal

2012-06-22 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
Public bug reported:

Imported from Debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/678555:

Package: autofs
Version: 5.0.6-2
Severity: important
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu quantal ubuntu-patch

After merging 5.0.6-2 for Ubuntu I have noticed that upstart init daemon
was tracking the wrong PID of the daemon. [1]

This resulted me into digging what has changed and I noticed the three
patches, which I have attached to this email.

These patches [0001-0003] do three things:

* Check mount.nfs version to be = 1.1.1
* Check kernel version is = 2.6.22
* Do above by calling nfs_version_check at pre-demonisation, hence
upstart ending up tracking `mount.nfs -V` call
* all for the sake of figuring out if probing optimisation can be used
(or something, not too sure):

The change to have the kernel process text based mount options can
introduce lengthy timeout waits when attempting a mount to a host
that is not available.

To avoid these waits autofs should probe singleton mounts if it
thinks mount.nfs will pass text options to the kernel (which of
course implies the kernel supports this).

But, mount.nfs 1.1.1 is acient and so is linux kernel 2.6.22... so I'm
thinking to make this a no-op. and simply remove those checks. See mine
Remove-*.patch attached.

With that patch I want to revert the upstream patches [0001-0003].

Setting priority to important as this is change of daemon behaviour and
resource waste to fork calls like this. Feel free to lower severity, if
you wish.

[1] Upstart does not rely on pidfiles, instead it counts forks/clones
and chooses the correct pid to track, such that it notices if it dies /
gets killed. This is more reliable than pidfiles. Upstart can also run
daemons in foreground mode.

Steps performec to verify:
1) login into clean precise chroot with proposed disabled
2) install euca2ools
3) attempted installing openssl, which failed (bug reproduced). Verified that
the symlink is wrong.
4) enabled proposed
5) upgraded euca2ools
6) installed openssl successfully (bug resolved)
7) verified that the /etc/ssl/ has coorrect layout and that the euca2ools
symlink is correct - /etc/ssl/certs/cert-ec2.pem

Additional tests:
1) with proposed enabled, tested that installing euca2ools and openssl in

 - do no ship /etc/default/autofs (Closes: #673796)
 - install /etc/init.d/autofs manually (dh_installinit have issue finding
it)
 - removed ugly symlinks debian/autofs.{default,init}
 - list bin programs and modules more explicitly in debian/*.install
 - transfer ucf conffile ownership from old autofs5 to autofs
   * removed debian/configure_override
   * recommend kmod|module-init-tools
   * ship debian/autofs.init instead of heavily patching upstream script
   * simplify (and fix) debian/autofs.init a bit in loading/checking modules,
and use /bin/sh instead of /bin/bash
   * remove messing with /dev/autofs misc device in initscript,
it is managed by udev or devtmpfs
   * remove (now unused) USE_MISC_DEVICE definition from default/autofs too
   * do not check for modprobe or procfs in configure, since module loading
is ifdef'ed out in the code, and #ifdef the missing parts too
 (do-not-check-for-modprobe-procfs-or-load-module.patch)
   * always define standard program paths when building even if the
corresponding
utility isn't installed (e2fsck, mount, mount.nfs). There is no need to
check presence of standard utilities or verify their standard abilities.
   * also define other paths explicitly instead of relying on a config-time
search - the build will be wrong if some directory (eg, /etc/sysconfig)
will be present during configure time.
   * autoreconf and clean autoconf-generated files, FTBFS (Closes: #674391)
This still does not make quilt patches easily revertable, since we
don't save old configure and upstream changes patches configure to,
so once regenerated by autoreconf, it will be different.
   * do not use $DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH in debian/rules without setting it
   * two patches:
   debian/patches/link-daemon-with-lpthread.patch
   debian/patches/save-hesiod-libs-correctly.patch
 to fix gold/-Wl,-no-as-needed FTBFS.
   * remove individual upstream patches from debian/patches and replace them
with single autofs-5.0.6-upstream-git.patch - all upstream commits in
master branch since release_5_0_6 tag. Update this patch to include
all current fixes too (up to 2012-06-01).
   * added debian/TODO file

[Bug 1006509] Re: Please merge from debian autofs 5.0.6-1

2012-06-01 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
It is probably easiest to review the debdiff against debian.

Merge branch is attached as well, but there are a lot of file-id
changes, so the diffs from bzr probably best to be filtered with
filterdiff.

[Bug 511620] Re: write errors on virtual disc during install

2010-02-14 Thread Dmitrijs Ledkovs
I have some more interesting things to report.

I'm using karmic libvirt and if I use virtual drive the lucid daily live
installs fine but at reboot I get input/output errors on the virtual
drive.

If I emulate the hard-disk as sda drive no input/output errors are
present.

If you need further information I've kept all the VM's and iso to
reproduce the errors I get.

Maybe it's problem with lucid not the qemu-kvm?
