[Bug 1357098] [NEW] StrongSwan incorrectly generating esp packets

When pinging a remote node from my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS(GNU/Linux
3.8.13-bone59 armv7l) over an established StrongSwan VPN tunnel, the
remote node sees the generated esp packets (via tcpdump), but does not
respond. I think this is an armhf package issue, because I tested the
configuration, certs and keys using Ubuntu on an x86 and using Raspian
on a RaspberryPi, and the remote node responded as expected, and had esp
packets going both directions. Leading me to guess that this is an ARMv7
specific issue.

Thank you Simon and Robie. This is definitely a kernel issue. I didn't
realize that I was using a non-standard kernel, and when I switched to
hardware that used an Ubuntu supported kernel, everything worked fine.

Hello,

The latest cinder-common package seem to set the ownership of
/var/lib/cinder and /var/log/cinder as 750:adm.

750 is an unresolvable uid. The cinder user is added to the system
using the next consecutive uid -- in my current test server, it is 117.

Hello,

Prior to applying the qemu package in Soren's PPA, we were able to
reproduce this problem within 45 minutes (on average). We're now up to
22 hours (and climbing) without an issue.

If anyone is curious, here is the test setup that we have been using
with OpenStack:

We tested the -proposed packages yesterday and are confident that they
resolve the issue. We used the test scenario described in comment #101.

Servers that have not had the updated package applied failed the test
within an hour. Servers with the updated package did not fail the test.

I am trying to access an autofs mounted resource that depends on another autofs 
managed resource.
I.e. I try to open a truecrypt container that is located on a samba fileshare.
Both are registered with autofs and both are initially not mounted.
When I try to access the truecrypt container it fails. The autofs log says no 
such file for the cifs container and does not
try to mount the cifs resource automatically.
If I manually mount the cifs fileshare (or try to accesss this prior to the 
truecrypt) it works.

After some research and communication with the autofs maintainer (Ian Kent) I 
found out that in order for this to work autofs has to be configured with the  
configure option
--disable-mount-locking is used.

Currently, autofs_5.0.7-3ubuntu1.dsc does not use this option.
I contacted the autofs maintainer and he confirmed that 
--disable-mount-locking should be used in the configure.
He believes that using this option causes no side effects and solves the issue 
I experience.

When I log in to my EC2 instance, I see the message:

  A newer build of the Ubuntu lucid server image is available.
  It is named 'release' and has build serial '20101228'.

I'm a reasonably-experienced ubuntu sysadmin (with little cloud
experience) and I don't know if or how I should obtain the newer build.

Ubuntu is a packager, not a developer.  The right way to get this to
happen is for someone (who would have to be more motivated than I am) to
talk to the Debian SSH maintainers, or even the openssh developers
themselves.  Options include forking (bad), making a completely new
package out of the patched ssh and getting that into debian in parallel
with the regular ssh, making such a package and serving it elsewhere, or
convincing debian to accept the patch.  I don't think this is the venue
for further discussion, as it's clear ubuntu will not do anything
directly.

The server isn't being used much right now, but as you can see, no
memory has really been free'd. Right now I am working around this by
reloading apache at 11:59 every night (the saddest cron job on earth),

Stefan, thanks for re-iterating the MaxRequestsPerChild tidbit, I had
forgotten that option was for lifetime, not concurrency. That'll
probably help workaround momentarily.

Also, I am not currently doing any tweaking wrt the SSLSessionCache, I
recall messing with it when I first started seeing this problem, but had
removed the configuration options since it didn't seem to help much.

I would just like to see some other pair of eyes confirm that a default
install with SSL still leaks. This is apparent because when I run the
same tests against the HTTP only port things look normal.

Just to chime in, this is affecting my 10.04 LTS nodes talking to my
recently upgraded 10.04 LTS puppet master. Puppet sits behind Apache
with mod_proxy_balancer and mod_ssl. I disabled reqtimeout and have yet
to see this re-appear.

Agreed.  This needs to be on lucid LTS because this basically cripples
webDAV... and webDAV is typically something you use in a server
environment which is more likely to be running the LTS.  I can tell you
we're basically SOL on an upgrade from hardy on several servers because
of this.  We tried running a cronjob every 5 minutes to fix all of the
permissions, but it doesn't work well enough to push to production.

Hi Chuck,
The /etc/rc2.d/S50ntp script was never changed. My machine has been
through three upgrades (Intrepid, Jaunty and Karmic). When I examined
the file I discovered that it was an actual file and not a sym link
to /etc/init.d/ntp. When I replaced the file with this sym link and then
ran 'apt-get install -f' the install completed successfully. I don't
know when or how  /etc/rc2.d/S50ntp became a file, but it is definitely
not something I did deliberately. I hope this helps you.

In the old /etc/init.d/mysql script, there was a similar check status
loop, but it only spun 14 times before exiting.   If there were a
problem with your server, you'd only block for max of ~14 seconds while
trying to ping the server before breaking out.

In the new `upstart` script /etc/init/mysql.conf, the analogous status
check was changed to a while ! ... loop which means the script will
spin forever when your server has a problem?

done

It seems that there are a few common errors that are easily resolvable,
for example  Can't connect to MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'  error or issues with the debian-sys-
maint user that some of us have from time-to-time, but there appears to
be a chicken/egg scenario here caused by this infinite loop.

As a side note, I've now completely lost my /etc/init/mysql.conf file
and can't seem to get it back through the package manager regardless of
purging/reinstalling packages.  That concerns me a bit, but I can't
pinpoint the behavior well enough to log a separate bug at this point.

I see that this is marked as fix released, but I'm still having this
issue with Lucid. I'm running php5 and php5-gd with version
5.3.2-1ubuntu4. I have gd loaded, the rest of the gd functions work, but
I get function not found for imageantialias.

If I'm a fluke, that's fine, I'd appreciate some insight as to what I'm
missing. But I'd like to see if this is still working for anyone else.

[Bug 1384503] [NEW] rsync fails on large files with compression

Copying large (10GB) files with rsync -z (compression) leads to a long
hang and eventual error after transferring part of the file.  The error
is consistent.  The file copies at normal speed until it reaches its
maximum size (1.4 GB out of 20 GB for one, 6.9 GB out of 29 GB for
another).  Then nothing happens for a while (many minutes).  Finally,
there is an error:

In this case, 6.9 GB of 29 GB transferred.  Without -z, it works.

According to this report, version 3.1.0 (included in 14.04) uses a
different compression package from prior versions.  Prior versions did
not have this problem for me using the same command on the same systems.
Both hosts ran Ubuntu 11.10 at the time, and all run 14.04 now, in each
case with all updates applied, Intel hardware.  Network connection
between them is gigabit ethernet through one switch.  A shell ssh
between them in a terminal works and stays up during the failure, so it
is not a network issue.  There are no relevant entries in syslog on
either machine.  There is sufficient capacity on the receiving disk.
All filesystems are ext4.

With apparmor broken, I'm unable to reboot any instances in my OpenStack

I did not try any other action such as launching or deleting instances.

In order to resolve this, I had to re-install the prior version of
libvirt (1.2.2-0ubuntu13.1.2~cloud0) and then reinstall apparmor.

Is this a bug? Should this version of libvirt not be in precise and only
trusty?

I just noticed that after I applied the latest updates (apt-get dist-
ugrade) to my Ubuntu 14.04 system that USB redirection is now failing on
THIS system as well - just like the 14.10 system failed.

FWIW, I do not see any apparomor denial messages in /var/log/syslog or
anywhere else.  So far I've not found anything to indicate why
passthrough failed, seems like a silent failure whatever it is.

Please disregard my previous comment about being broken in 14.04 -- In
fact I was running 14.10 and didn't realize it (a reboot and 14.10 being
the grub default).  In fact the passthrough still works in 14.04 just
fine, and still fully broken in 14.10.

I did confirm, however, that there are NO apparmor messages regarding
qemu on my 14.10 system.

[Bug 190359] Re: dhclient continually seeks ip address on unconnected interface

I think I have the same issue on 14.04 Server, at least it appears to be
the same issue.  No network-manager.

If the server is configured for DHCP and you later change it to static,
the dhcp client daemon still goes out and requests a DHCP address.

This impacts DNS for the device.  The static IP remains on the
interface, but the DNS record changes making it unreachable via
hostname.

The work around that I found, other than killing the dhclient process, is 
deleting the dhcp client database and rebooting.
rm /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.*

You could probably just kill the related interface files if you wanted
to.

Based on the way this is behaving, I suspect its the same issue as not
having the interface active.
