We currently do not support root-on-iscsi.
a) hw-detect will bail out if it doesn't find any disks in the system, so it
never reaches the code to activate the iscsi things in the installer.
b) open-iscsi is lacking the initramfs hooks to pull
dnsmasq is a general purpose dns (and DHCP, but let's ignore this for the
purpose of this conversation) server.
The dnsmasq package installs itself and starts listening on all interfaces.
That seems like a reasonable default behaviour for a general purpose caching
dns server to me.

1. The hw-detect problem should be straightforward enough, so I won't go into
much depth about that.
2. The problems involing open-iscsi are many-fold:

loaded until *after* the loop that goes around looking for (physical)
disks runs. Incidentally, that loop does an "exit 10" if there are not
local disks at all, so the open-iscsi-udeb never gets loaded if the

Whenever I have to do my testing with Eucalyptus, I end up having to do
something like:
sudo rm -rf /etc/eucalyptus /var/lib/eucalyptus /var/log/eucalyptus
..after removing the packages in question. The postrm maintainer script
should really be cleaning up these things.

euca_conf --register-* requires you to add --local-sync if the
controller you're adding is on localhost. Instead, it should detect the
given hostname/IP is local and assume --local-sync.
This snippet will return true if a given IP will be routed to the
loopback device:
