after doing the following:
1) In /etc/samba/smb.conf set the debuglevel =10 (in the
Debugging/Accounting section, before log =something)

Comparing the success and the failure logs attached by the bug reporter,
I can see the following difference:
Success-log:

I have kept a PPA samba at: https://launchpad.net/~csurbhi/+archive/ppa/
Can someone try it out and confirm if it works for them or not. If it is
confirmed, I will resend this fix to the samba devel mailing list and we can
get it in Ubuntu. Thanks for your help.

cp -p on CIFS mount does not
This is a bug in the samba server. Hence changing the package from linux
to samba. I have attached a samba server patch and done brief testing
with it.
** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu Lucid) = samba (Ubuntu Lucid)
