Note that this _only_ affects trusty. All kernels in trusty are
affected. linux-lts-vivid in trusty shows this behaviour where as linux
in vivid does not, as these are essentially identical it seems most
likely this is either an lxc profile issue or an appparmor userspace

A minimal testcase looks like:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure slapd# Choose hdb as database type, enter an
admin password, and accept defaults for other values.
$ sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f db.ldif
# Where db.ldif looks like this:
$ cat db.ldif
dn: olcDatabase={1}hdb,cn=config
It looks like the default database created when configuring slapd was
conflicting with what I was specifying in comment #3. I guess this has
changed with the recent version provided with 14.04.
If I enter the right values during dpkg-reconfigure, and leave out this
whole section of db.ldif, it

When I install slapd I see a complaint about an apparmor denial. When I
try to set up my ldap setup, I see database corruption messages. After
this slapd is unusable.
The same setup (as far as I can see) worked in 12.04.
