[Bug 1278359] Re: ntpdate call frequency
* Disclaimer: The functionality of this program is now available in the ntpd program. See the -q command line option in the ntpd - Network Time Protocol (NTP) daemon page. After a suitable period of mourning, the ntpdate program is to be retired from this distribution [1]. This page was last updated on Nov 2012, but I would expect mourning to take longer. In other words: I would not expect ntpdate to be changed. I suspect that ntpdate is a smaller package then ntp. ntpdate is indeed smaller than ntp, by a factor of 10 (590k for ntp, 63k for ntpdate). Generically, both of them are small enough not to be an issue. ntp still also is a server package Yes indeed. ntp can be used as a source for clock (when you build your own stratum), or as a consumer (client). Even as a source you still need another source for clock (be it a stratum 1, or a local GPS, or whatever). In my case, I usually deploy one ntp server syncing to upstream strata, and all the machines in my network will sync with my ntp server (as a result there is one -- perhaps two -- ntp servers in my network, and -- except for these ntp servers -- all clock sync is local to my network. this might be the reason behind the use of ntpdate Most probably (before my time, so not really sure) ntpdate was written because (at the time) *most* non-server machines were rarely connected. So a program that could attempt time sync when the network was up again would help a lot. Of course, given the (usually) long interval between network connects, the local clock would be off by a larger margin. Also, ntp itself lacked the ability to make large changes instantly, like ntpdate does. This is now available, via the -g parameter. As for minor time fluctuations: well, it all depends on what you see as minor and major. You do not see clock fluctuation as major; I do not see it as minor. But it all depends if your machines are providing services or not, I guess. ...It might be a good idea to create an option in the ntp (or ntpdate)... It is already there. For the poll interval, please see Poll Interval Management at [2]. In other words: you can manage your poll as you wish, with intervals as large as 36 hours. Of course, doing that just because one does not want frequent clock sync sort of throws NTP's poll management off. shrug/, this is an user option, and any consequences will be at the user's computer. But, I guess, my whole issue here is that -- for me -- it does not make sense to have the ability to maintain time synced, and not use it. The cost, in terms of CPU cycles, and packets exchange is not that significant (and most probably smaller than the load of a not-simple web page). [Bug 1178933] Re: Time drifting when set to update Automatically from Internet
@Colin Law: ntpdate and ntp are both provided by the same source package -- ntp. Frankly, I do not know why we still spend time with ntpdate -- this program has been deprecated by the NTP maintainers. Additionally, for machines that stay on, ntp is required (otherwise time will indeed slowly drift). ntpdate was useful when most users would disconnect when done; nowadays a LOT of users keep the machines on. Also, ntp should be installed by default on Ubuntu Server. It is not. Quick solution: sudo apt-get install ntp. Then disregard ntpdate (both will be installed, but ntp trumps ntpdate). @Yolanda Robla: please always explain, in a comment, why you are changing status, importance, or affected packages. It makes life much more easier for all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1178933 Title: Time drifting when set to update Automatically from Internet To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1178933/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 1178933] Re: Time drifting when set to update Automatically from Internet
@Colin Law: ndtpdate is provided by the same *source* package (which is what I wrote above ;-). You are looking at the *binary* NTP package (which is also provided by source package ntp). Although a bit pedantic, with ntpdate time *is* automatically updated. The problem is that it does not keep on updating (unless the network interfaces are cycled). But I agree with you, it is, at least, misleading. The complete solution is to abandon ntpdate usage. Everybody gets to use ntp. There are a few bugs on ntp/ntpdate about that. One day we will get it done.
[Bug 1278359] Re: ntpdate call frequency
I cannot see how making time sync calls even more sparse would not cause even more drift. ntpdate is obsolete. I am not even sure why we still deploy it instead of ntp. Inertia, perhaps? But this would not solve your issue: the replacement, be it NTP or openntpd, or whatever, still needs to keep the clock synchronised, so would still need to call NTP lock servers every so often. How often will depend, specifically, on the quality of your computer's RTC, and the importance you give to clock synchronisation. I do not think, in general, once per day is good enough. I think -- depending on the quality of your RTC -- from around one hour to, perhaps, a few hours would be good enough. If your RTC is so bad you need a sync call every few minutes, better get a more reliable machine. Certainly, and never, more than a day. My personal view, and problem I see on using ntpdate, is actually the opposite of yours: I think ntpdate does NOT maintain clock synchronisation. Granted, it *does* sync the RTC at network up. Then, the RTC will slowly but surely drift. Given machines that more and more stay powered on connected, one sync per network up is NOT enough. Instead, we should move to ntp or openntpd. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to ntp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1278359 Title: ntpdate call frequency To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ntp/+bug/1278359/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 967815] [NEW] /var/lib/tftpboot directory permissions destroyed
Public bug reported: Every so often -- in fact whenever a new debian-installer is released for Precise -- we re-import the distro. In the process, the TFTP boot files are regenerated. Somehow this changes /var/lib/tftpboot permissions on subdirectories and files. The result is NOT guaranteed to be bad, and it is NOT guaranteed to affect the same directories and files in the same way. For example, the last occurence (today) shows only this change: 55,56c55,56 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-03-22 23:13 precise-i386 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2012-03-22 23:13 precise-x86_64 --- d-w---x--- 2 root root 4096 2012-03-28 04:31 precise-i386 d-w---x--- 2 root root 4096 2012-03-28 04:31 precise-x86_64 Notice the completely hosed permissions on the new directories. As a result PXE booting may fail (in this case DID fail). This is a serious issue, impacting automated testing. [Bug 841672] Re: ssh-add does not unlock ssh keys
I just tested it here -- Oneiric, two terminal windows, one running RoxTerm, one under byobu. On the byobu window: ssh-add -l (my key was shown) ssh-add -D ssh-add -l (no keys shown) ssh test.machine.info (pop up asking for SSH passphrase; entered it, got in session; ended the session) ssh test.machine.info (session opened with no pop-ups; ended the session) ssh-add -D ssh-add -l (no keys shown) ssh-add ssh-add -l (my key was shown) ssh test.machine.info (session opened with no pop-ups; ended the the session) Moved over to the stand-alone RoxTerm; then repeated the tests. To my surprise even *after* adding my SSH key in, when I tried to open the SSH session to the test machine I was still presented with a pop-up asking for the passphrase on *first* SSH. Second SSH session, *without* running 'ssh-add -D', opened the session without a pop-up for passphrase. Another interesting bit: on the RoxTerm stand-alone, 'ssh-add -D' did *not* clean up the keys in the agent. Additional findings: SSH-AUTH_SOCK differs on the terminal windows (byobu and RoxTerm): * Under RoxTerm: [cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:~$ set | grep SSH SSH_AGENT_PID=2857 SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-6fXAtd/ssh [cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:~$ * under byobu: [cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:/build/buildd/ubuntu-qa-tools/vm-tools$ set | grep SSH SSH_AGENT_PID=2857 SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/home/cerdea/.byobu/.ssh-agent [cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:/build/buildd/ubuntu-qa-tools/vm-tools$ Note that the SSH_AGENT_PID is the same. [Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server
@brawehear: no, it should not. The ntp.drift is a (continuously updated) measure of how much your system's hardware clock deviates from time sources (the NTP servers, or a real precise clock attached to the machine) -- in other words, how much your hardware clock _drifts_ from reliable clock sources. The calculated value is used to adjust the clock when no time servers can be contacted. NTP server addresses are stored in /etc/ntp.conf. @gerti: 1. I shouldn't need the NTP-daemon, as I don't want to run a NTP- service for other machines om my network. Well, this is just *one* reason to run NTP (as opposed to ntpdate only). The other -- and, in my view, much more important -- reason is to keep your machine as much as possible time-synchronised. If you just use ntpdate your clock will (slowly, but surely) drift from the correct time. How much and how fast depends on a lot of factors, including how long since last sync, thermal variances on the computer, quality of the computer hardware clock source, etc. Additionally, every time you manually (or via cron) run ntpdate to adjust your time you will get a sudden jump in clock time -- which may cause problems to other programmes. 2. I reported, that my completely raw (i.e. non-update) 11.4 Ubuntu did not adjust the clock correctly. We have released updates to NTP on 11.04. You *need* to apply them for us to be able to verify your issue. Neither Clint, nor I, can reproduce it on up-to-date 11.04. Unless you tell us more details (including what did not work, with output of commands, there is not much we can do. [Bug 691590] [NEW] libvirt should not take ownership of ISO images
Public bug reported: Natty (and it was also the same on Maverick, IIRC). When you assign an ISO to a VM, libvirt will take over onwership of the ISO. This creates problems if the ISO is updated. For example, I am daily updating the Natty server ISOs, and running tests on them via KVM (all automated). The ISO updates will fail because libvirt chowns them. I see no reason for this: libvirt only needs the ISO as input. ** Affects: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: iso-testing natty qa ** Tags added: natty qa -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/691590 Title: libvirt should not take ownership of ISO images -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 691590] Re: libvirt should not take ownership of ISO images
Yes, this would work (as long as the process doing this move owns the directory -- otherwise it is still an error 13). The whole point, though, is that libvirt does not need to take ownership of a *read-only* file. At least it could revert the ownership when the VM is closed, if you want to protect against an ISO update while the ISO is in use by libvirt. Or use flock, or something. But this (update-while-somebody-is- using) is a common issue on *IX, and still we do not see ownership being unilaterally changed. Of course, we can also bypass by using 'sudo', but this would break the least privilege principle. ** Changed in: libvirt (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/691590 Title: libvirt should not take ownership of ISO images -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 684816] Re: Node Controller (NC) fail to register
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. 'euca_conf' is expected to be run under 'sudo': the files under /var/lib/eucalyptus are owned by the 'eucalyptus' user. Please re-run the node registration as: sudo euca_conf --register-nodes ... Now, if you have your environment correctly set up, the installation of a new NC should capture the Eucalyptus basic configuration (CLC, SC, Walrus, and CC) from the -registration services -- so you might have a problem somehwere there. Additionally, I do not like the messages stating Warning: cannot file file ... -- these are not clear (what does 'file file' mean?). I would like you to open a new bug on this, and add in the command and full output. Finally, it is usually a better option to try to open bugs via 'ubuntu- bug eucalyptus' -- this will also upload logs, and allow for an easier (and hopefully faster) issue triage. ** Changed in: eucalyptus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: eucalyptus (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/684816 Title: Node Controller (NC) fail to register -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 684816] Re: Node Controller (NC) fail to register
OK. Let's get on to the basics, then. Please add/attach here: 1. a description of your topology (on which machines the CLC/CC/SC/Walrus are running); 2. on each of the machines above, the output of 'initctl list | grep euca'; 3. run another try of registering the NC, then: 4. from the CLC, the contents of /var/log/eucalyptus (please tar -z the file before uploading); 5. if the CC is on a different computer, please also attach the tarball for this machine /var/log/eucalyptus. [Bug 677161] Re: tunnelled clear text passwords
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. If I understand you correctly, you are worried about a clear-text (i.e., non-encrypted) passphrase being sent by the SSH client, and that anyone will be able to sniff the channel and grab it. Please rest assured this is not the case: the keyword (as stated in the Ubuntu Forum entry) is *tunneled*. This means the channel in which the session flows is already encrypted. As for being clear-text... well, there is not really much option. The passphrase will be hashed and compared to the saved one (under /etc/shadow), and different systems use different processes to perform the hashing. In fact, the security issue one might have is with the fact that SSH password-based logins are accepted. Ideally, you should only run with public-key encryption. I am tending to close this bug INVALID, but I will wait your response. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- tunnelled clear text passwords https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/677161 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
