[Bug 1278359] Re: ntpdate call frequency

2014-05-12 Thread C de-Avillez
* Disclaimer: The functionality of this program is now available in the
ntpd program. See the -q command line option in the ntpd - Network Time
Protocol (NTP) daemon page. After a suitable period of mourning, the
ntpdate program is to be retired from this distribution [1]. This page
was last updated on Nov 2012, but I would expect mourning to take
longer.

In other words: I would not expect ntpdate to be changed.

I suspect that ntpdate is a smaller package then ntp.

ntpdate is indeed smaller than ntp, by a factor of 10 (590k for ntp, 63k
for ntpdate). Generically, both of them are small enough not to be an
issue.

ntp still also is a server package

Yes indeed. ntp can be used as a source for clock (when you build your
own stratum), or as a consumer (client). Even as a source you still need
another source for clock (be it a stratum 1, or a local GPS, or
whatever). In my case, I usually deploy one ntp server syncing to
upstream strata, and all the machines in my network will sync with my
ntp server (as a result there is one -- perhaps two -- ntp servers in my
network, and -- except for these ntp servers -- all clock sync is local
to my network.

this might be the reason behind the use of ntpdate

Most probably (before my time, so not really sure) ntpdate was written
because (at the time) *most* non-server machines were rarely connected.
So a program that could attempt time sync when the network was up again
would help a lot. Of course, given the (usually) long interval between
network connects, the local clock would be off by a larger margin.

Also, ntp itself lacked the ability to make large changes instantly,
like ntpdate does. This is now available, via the -g parameter.

As for minor time fluctuations: well, it all depends on what you see
as minor and major. You do not see clock fluctuation as major; I do not
see it as minor. But it all depends if your machines are providing
services or not, I guess.

...It might be a good idea to create an option in the ntp (or
ntpdate)...

It is already there. For the poll interval, please see Poll Interval
Management at [2]. In other words: you can manage your poll as you
wish, with intervals as large as 36 hours. Of course, doing that just
because one does not want frequent clock sync sort of throws NTP's
poll management off. shrug/, this is an user option, and any
consequences will be at the user's computer.

But, I guess, my whole issue here is that -- for me -- it does not make
sense to have the ability to maintain time synced, and not use it. The
cost, in terms of CPU cycles, and packets exchange is not that
significant (and most probably smaller than the load of a not-simple web
page).

[Bug 1178933] Re: Time drifting when set to update Automatically from Internet

2014-03-14 Thread C de-Avillez
@Colin Law: ntpdate and ntp are both provided by the same source package
-- ntp.

Frankly, I do not know why we still spend time with ntpdate -- this
program has been deprecated by the NTP maintainers. Additionally, for
machines that stay on, ntp is required (otherwise time will indeed
slowly drift). ntpdate was useful when most users would disconnect when
done; nowadays a LOT of users keep the machines on.

Also, ntp should be installed by default on Ubuntu Server. It is not.

Quick solution: sudo apt-get install ntp. Then disregard ntpdate (both
will be installed, but ntp trumps ntpdate).

@Yolanda Robla: please always explain, in a comment, why you are
changing status, importance, or affected packages. It makes life much
more easier for all.

[Bug 1178933] Re: Time drifting when set to update Automatically from Internet

2014-03-14 Thread C de-Avillez
@Colin Law: ndtpdate is provided by the same *source* package (which is
what I wrote above ;-). You are looking at the *binary* NTP package
(which is also provided by source package ntp).

Although a bit pedantic, with ntpdate time *is* automatically updated.
The problem is that it does not keep on updating (unless the network
interfaces are cycled). But I agree with you, it is, at least,
misleading.

The complete solution is to abandon ntpdate usage. Everybody gets to use
ntp. There are a few bugs on ntp/ntpdate about that. One day we will get
it done.

[Bug 1278359] Re: ntpdate call frequency

2014-02-11 Thread C de-Avillez
I cannot see how making time sync calls even more sparse would not cause
even more drift.

ntpdate is obsolete. I am not even sure why we still deploy it instead
of ntp. Inertia, perhaps?

But this would not solve your issue: the replacement, be it NTP or
openntpd, or whatever, still needs to keep the clock synchronised, so
would still need to call NTP lock servers every so often. How often will
depend, specifically, on the quality of your computer's RTC, and the
importance you give to clock synchronisation. I do not think, in
general, once per day is good enough. I think -- depending on the
quality of your RTC -- from around one hour to, perhaps, a few hours
would be good enough. If your RTC is so bad you need a sync call every
few minutes, better get a more reliable machine. Certainly, and never,
more than a day.

My personal view, and problem I see on using ntpdate, is actually the
opposite of yours: I think ntpdate does NOT maintain clock
synchronisation. Granted, it *does* sync the RTC at network up. Then,
the RTC will slowly but surely drift. Given machines that more and more
stay powered on connected, one sync per network up is NOT enough.
Instead, we should move to ntp or openntpd.

[Bug 967815] Re: /var/lib/tftpboot directory permissions destroyed

2012-11-15 Thread C de-Avillez
** Description changed:

  Every so often -- in fact whenever a new debian-installer is released
  for Precise -- we re-import the distro. In the process, the TFTP boot
  files are regenerated.

  Somehow this changes /var/lib/tftpboot permissions on subdirectories and
  files. The result is NOT guaranteed to be bad, and it is NOT guaranteed
  to affect the same directories and files in the same way.

  For example, the last occurence (today) shows only this change:

  55,56c55,56
   drwxr-xr-x 2 root root   4096 2012-03-22 23:13 precise-i386
   drwxr-xr-x 2 root root   4096 2012-03-22 23:13 precise-x86_64
  ---
   d-w---x--- 2 root root   4096 2012-03-28 04:31 precise-i386
   d-w---x--- 2 root root   4096 2012-03-28 04:31 precise-x86_64

  Notice the completely hosed permissions on the new directories.

  As a result PXE booting may fail (in this case DID fail).

  This is a serious issue, impacting automated testing.

  WORKAROUND:

  find /var/lib/tftpboot -type d -exec sudo chmod 755 {} \;
  find /var/lib/tftpboot -type f -exec sudo chmod 644 {} \;

  but this is rather ridiculous ;-)

+
+ SRU Justifications
+
+ [IMPACT]
+
+ This bug causes the TFTP boot directories to be unreadable by PXE or
+ TFTP. The change replaces wrong calls to os.umask() by direct open/close
+ calls, with specific permissions. As a result, the program's default
+ umask is not cobblered.
+
+ There is no visible impact on applying this fix elsewhere in the code.
+
+ [TESTCASE]
+
+ 1. On an unpatched running Cobbler, set a script to run 'sudo cobbler sync'
every half hour or so; let it run for a few hours/days
+ 2. meanwhile check /var/lib/tftpboot (or whatever directory the PXE boot
files are written to) for changes in the permissions: find /var/lib/tftpboot !
-perm -444
+ 3. If the 'find' on (3) shows any files -- you reproduced the bug. Follow up
to 4. below; otherwise, go back to 2. and try again
+
+ 4. recover the /var/lib/tftpboot:
+   find /var/lib/tftpboot -type d -exec sudo chmod 755 {} \;
+   find /var/lib/tftpboot -type f -exec sudo chmod 644 {} \
+ 5. apply the update
+ 6. re-run the script/command 'sudo clobbler sync' every half hour or so; let
it run for a few days.
+ 7. repeat step 2. above every so often; you should see *no* files without
read permission being listed.
+ 8. wait the few days.
+ repeat step 2. once more -- no files should be listed.
+ 9. DONE.
+
+ [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
+
+ No regressions potentials have been identified.

[Bug 1058301] [NEW] error is displayed if no changes are good to commit on post-install

2012-09-28 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

ran an dist-upgrade, got the following at the end:

ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
bzr: warning: skipping /etc/X11/core (larger than add.maximum_file_size of
2000 bytes)
Committing to: /etc/

bzr: ERROR: No changes to commit. Please 'bzr add' the files you want to
commit, or use --unchanged to force an empty commit.
E: Problem executing scripts DPkg::Post-Invoke 'if [ -x /usr/bin/etckeeper ];
then etckeeper post-install; fi'
E: Sub-process returned an error code

a 'sudo bzr status' on /etc shows:

[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:/etc/etckeeper/post-install.d$ sudo bzr status
[sudo] password for cerdea:
unknown:
  X11/core

From previous experience, if I remove /etc/X11/core, there is no error.
So it seems the coredump written by X mucks with etckeeper processing.
Still, etckeeper should survive it (mostly because the coredump is being
written to /etc/X11 by X itself).

[Bug 967815] Re: /var/lib/tftpboot directory permissions destroyed

2012-09-10 Thread C de-Avillez
@Serge: I have just packaged a Cobbler for it (currently building in my
PPA, for Precise), and will deploy in a few. There were some doubts
about applicability, but some manual tests I ran with the weird
os.umask() values in the code resulted in files/directories with the
same permissions I see on prod.

The PPA is at https://launchpad.net/~hggdh2/+archive/ppa

[Bug 967815] [NEW] /var/lib/tftpboot directory permissions destroyed

2012-03-28 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

WORKAROUND:

find /var/lib/tftpboot -type d -exec sudo chmod 755 {} \;
find /var/lib/tftpboot -type f -exec sudo chmod 644 {} \;

but this is rather ridiculous ;-)

[Bug 912716] Re: [improvement] allow graceful-stop via the init.d script

2012-01-17 Thread C de-Avillez
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. This
looks like bug 456381, which has been addressed for at least Maverick
onwards.

Can you please identify your Apache version ('dpkg -l apache2' will show
it).

Thank you.

[Bug 841672] Re: ssh-add does not unlock ssh keys

2011-10-30 Thread C de-Avillez
I just tested it here -- Oneiric, two terminal windows, one running
RoxTerm, one under byobu.

On the byobu window:

ssh-add -l
(my key was shown)
ssh-add -D
ssh-add -l
(no keys shown)
ssh test.machine.info
(pop up asking for SSH passphrase; entered it, got in session; ended the
session)
ssh test.machine.info
(session opened with no pop-ups; ended the session)
ssh-add -D
ssh-add -l
(no keys shown)
ssh-add
ssh-add -l
(my key was shown)
ssh test.machine.info
(session opened with no pop-ups; ended the the session)

Moved over to the stand-alone RoxTerm; then repeated the tests. To my
surprise even *after* adding my SSH key in, when I tried to open the SSH
session to the test machine I was still presented with a pop-up asking
for the passphrase on *first* SSH. Second SSH session, *without* running
'ssh-add -D', opened the session without a pop-up for passphrase.

Another interesting bit: on the RoxTerm stand-alone, 'ssh-add -D' did
*not* clean up the keys in the agent.

Additional findings: SSH-AUTH_SOCK differs on the terminal windows
(byobu and RoxTerm):

* Under RoxTerm:

[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:~$ set | grep SSH
SSH_AGENT_PID=2857
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-6fXAtd/ssh
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:~$

* under byobu:

[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:/build/buildd/ubuntu-qa-tools/vm-tools$ set | grep SSH
SSH_AGENT_PID=2857
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/home/cerdea/.byobu/.ssh-agent
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:/build/buildd/ubuntu-qa-tools/vm-tools$

Note that the SSH_AGENT_PID is the same.

Also, I dimly remember something about gnome-keyring and ssh-add. Will
try to find out the references.

Setting importance to Medium.

[Bug 868753] Re: qemu+ssh connections to a remote libvirt fail

2011-10-06 Thread C de-Avillez
Hi Serge,

These hosts are in the QA lab, and only accessible via a SSH proxy.
Firewalls are certainly in place, but no custom libvirt customisation to
my knowledge. We can get you access if you need.

Interestingly, via the proxy I get this:

[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:~$ virsh -c qemu+ssh://aldebaran/system list --all
error: packet 1550146349 bytes received from server too large, want 262144
error: failed to connect to the hypervisor
[cerdea-aws]cerdea@xango3:~$

And, if I am local at aldebaran:

cerdea@aldebaran~:$ virsh -c qemu+ssh://aldebaran/system list --all
cerdea@aldebaran's password:
 Id Name State
--
1058 8913cfbf-4757-491f-b8c5-02df75d18f6e running

[Bug 805661] Re: NO reference clock support. I need Oncore ref clock support in ntp.

2011-09-11 Thread C de-Avillez
The bug was automatically expired because it was kept in status
incomplete for 60 days. Of course, it should not have expired, and or
course, it should not be incomplete.

But it was left incomplete -- and automatic closure took place.

It is a pity that it is easier to blame the developers and maintainers
than to try and find out what happened, though.

Marking triaged/Low.

[Bug 781088] Re: Time is not syncronized with NTP-server

2011-07-15 Thread C de-Avillez
@brawehear: no, it should not. The ntp.drift is a (continuously updated)
measure of how much your system's hardware clock deviates from time
sources (the NTP servers, or a real precise clock attached to the
machine) -- in other words, how much your hardware clock _drifts_ from
reliable clock sources. The calculated value is used to adjust the clock
when no time servers can be contacted.

NTP server addresses are stored in /etc/ntp.conf.

@gerti:

1. I shouldn't need the NTP-daemon, as I don't want to run a NTP-
service for other machines om my network. Well, this is just *one*
reason to run NTP (as opposed to ntpdate only). The other -- and, in my
view, much more important -- reason is to keep your machine as much as
possible time-synchronised.

If you just use ntpdate your clock will (slowly, but surely) drift from
the correct time. How much and how fast depends on a lot of factors,
including how long since last sync, thermal variances on the computer,
quality of the computer hardware clock source, etc. Additionally, every
time you manually (or via cron) run ntpdate to adjust your time you will
get a sudden jump in clock time -- which may cause problems to other
programmes.

2. I reported, that my completely raw (i.e. non-update) 11.4 Ubuntu did
not adjust the clock correctly. We have released updates to NTP on
11.04. You *need* to apply them for us to be able to verify your issue.
Neither Clint, nor I, can reproduce it on up-to-date 11.04.

Unless you tell us more details (including what did not work, with
output of commands, there is not much we can do.

Dropping the NTP task back to incomplete -- not enough data to confirm.

[Bug 735072] Re: The hostname proposed by installer is too long for file sharing to work correctly.

2011-04-11 Thread C de-Avillez
Ah well. Dear LP lost my comments on the change above.

Setting Triaged for the Samba (Ubuntu) task: this is clearly something
to be adjusted there; reassigning to the Canonical Server Team.

We could, pretty much, do the same as OSX: truncate the hostname to 15
characters, document it, and go from there.

[Bug 753779] [NEW] walrus fails to retrieve images on instance startup

2011-04-07 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

Well. After a long search, with lots of colourful herings, I zeroed in
this: trying to start a new instance; instance would stay in pending for
a while, then it would auto-terminate. After a series of false cues (my
colourful herings, at least one of them bright red) Serge noticed that
the /var/log/libvirt/qemu/i* logs would have a *LOT* of failed startups,
with this message in:

Failed to allocate memory: Cannot allocate memory
2011-04-07 12:34:43.451: shutting down

then the instance would retry a few times.

looking around, I finally noticed that when this happened -- about 99.9%
of the times in my tests -- the walrus would, at about the same time,
barf with some messages like:

[Bug 717166] Re: Broken with v4 isc-dhcp-server in Natty

2011-03-23 Thread C de-Avillez
Here you go:

ubuntu@cempedak:/var/log$ ~/getifaddrs
INTERFACE=lo SCRUBBEDINTERFACE=lo ADDR=127.0.0.1
INTERFACE=eth0:metadata SCRUBBEDINTERFACE=eth0 ADDR=169.254.169.254
INTERFACE=eth0 SCRUBBEDINTERFACE=eth0 ADDR=10.55.55.2
INTERFACE=eth0:priv SCRUBBEDINTERFACE=eth0 ADDR=172.19.1.1
INTERFACE=eth0:pub SCRUBBEDINTERFACE=eth0 ADDR=10.55.55.100

This specific test rig has been running for a few days now. Today the
CLC/CC/SC/Walrus had a dist-upgrade done, and rebooted some times, due
to a different test. After This other test, I went in to run the
getifaddrs as you asked. I got the output above, and -- to my surprise
-- it seems now we do get an IP address on the instances.

BUT the log entries still show that Euca's DHCPD startup failed. Since I
do not believe in magic, I and re-checking this all.

Hi Dan,

I was looking at it... here are the messages logged in the cc.log for

I then looked at the syslog, and what I see is this:

[Bug 728145] Re: euca tries to register a SC, fails, but adds it in

2011-03-02 Thread C de-Avillez
It should be noted that it is extreme bad form to have two euca installs
on the same subnet. I do agree with that.

But... it is also bad form to *fail* to register a SC, and still add it
in.

2011-02-21 Thread C de-Avillez
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

The /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate script *does* load the necessary
configuration. This is done by the ntpdate-debian script calling within.

Can you please expand on why it did not work for you?

[Bug 711590] [NEW] Eucalyptus depends on /usr/sbin/dhcpd3, not installed

2011-02-01 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

Eucalyptus-cc rootwraps /usr/sbin/dhcpd3, probably setting up the
environment to answer instances. Unfortunately, we are missing a Depends
on it. Even more, I am not sure if we should be using dhcpd3 anymore.

From the cc.log:

cc.log:[Tue Feb  1 16:52:10 2011][001909][EUCAINFO  ] vnetInit(): VNET
Configuration: eucahome=//, path=//var/run/eucalyptus/net,
dhcpdaemon=/usr/sbin/dhcpd3, dhcpuser=dhcpd, pubInterface=eth0,

cc.log:[Tue Feb  1 17:57:29 2011][004137][EUCAINFO  ] vnetKickDHCP():

//var/run/eucalyptus/net/euca-dhcp.leases -pf
//var/run/eucalyptus/net/euca-dhcp.pid -tf

The last line is repeated many times; other errors are also logged, probably
consequences. No instances succeed on start.

[Bug 691590] [NEW] libvirt should not take ownership of ISO images

2010-12-17 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

Natty (and it was also the same on Maverick, IIRC).

When you assign an ISO to a VM, libvirt will take over onwership of the
ISO. This creates problems if the ISO is updated.

For example, I am daily updating the Natty server ISOs, and running
tests on them via KVM (all automated). The ISO updates will fail because
libvirt chowns them.

I see no reason for this: libvirt only needs the ISO as input.

[Bug 691590] Re: libvirt should not take ownership of ISO images

2010-12-17 Thread C de-Avillez
Yes, this would work (as long as the process doing this move owns the
directory -- otherwise it is still an error 13). The whole point,
though, is that libvirt does not need to take ownership of a *read-only*
file.

At least it could revert the ownership when the VM is closed, if you
want to protect against an ISO update while the ISO is in use by
libvirt. Or use flock, or something. But this (update-while-somebody-is-
using) is a common issue on *IX, and still we do not see ownership being
unilaterally changed.

Of course, we can also bypass by using 'sudo', but this would break the
least privilege principle.

[Bug 684816] Re: Node Controller (NC) fail to register

2010-12-06 Thread C de-Avillez
Thank you for opening this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

'euca_conf' is expected to be run under 'sudo': the files under
/var/lib/eucalyptus are owned by the 'eucalyptus' user. Please re-run
the node registration as:

sudo euca_conf --register-nodes ...

Now, if you have your environment correctly set up, the installation of
a new NC should capture the Eucalyptus basic configuration (CLC, SC,
Walrus, and CC) from the -registration services -- so you might have a
problem somehwere there.

Additionally, I do not like the messages stating Warning: cannot file
file ... -- these are not clear (what does 'file file' mean?). I would
like you to open a new bug on this, and add in the command and full
output.

Finally, it is usually a better option to try to open bugs via 'ubuntu-
bug eucalyptus' -- this will also upload logs, and allow for an easier
(and hopefully faster) issue triage.

2010-12-06 Thread C de-Avillez
OK. Let's get on to the basics, then. Please add/attach here:

1. a description of your topology (on which machines the CLC/CC/SC/Walrus are
running);
2. on each of the machines above, the output of 'initctl list | grep euca';
3. run another try of registering the NC, then:
4. from the CLC, the contents of /var/log/eucalyptus (please tar -z the file
before uploading);
5. if the CC is on a different computer, please also attach the tarball for
this machine /var/log/eucalyptus.

And we will go from there.

non-encrypted) passphrase being sent by the SSH client, and that anyone
will be able to sniff the channel and grab it.

Ubuntu Forum entry) is *tunneled*. This means the channel in which the
session flows is already encrypted.

As for being clear-text... well, there is not really much option. The
passphrase will be hashed and compared to the saved one (under
/etc/shadow), and different systems use different processes to perform
the hashing.

In fact, the security issue one might have is with the fact that SSH
password-based logins are accepted. Ideally, you should only run with
public-key encryption.

I am tending to close this bug INVALID, but I will wait your response.
