Yes, when I originally opened a bug on this we were using headless
rackmount servers. I would imagine that is the dominant use case.

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking

2011-09-13 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Did this ever get fixed? The upstream patch with the helper was posted
to the mailing list in November 2009 and in the same thread it is
mentioned that the Ubuntu packaging would enable this by the time
Lucid/qemu-0.12-rc1 was released.

[Bug 579857] Re: automount and auto.smb not working

2010-09-15 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I did the following and it works:

apt-get install autofs smbfs smbclient
echo /smb /etc/auto.smb /etc/auto.master
mkdir /smb
/etc/init.d/autofs restart
ls /smb/buffalo/share (buffalo is a samba host, share is the share name -
replace with local details)

Initially this was not working for me, since I did not have smbclient
installed and it is called by auto.smb.

[Bug 615837] [NEW] nagios3-cgi bad icons after install

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nagios3-cgi

Click View Config-Hosts
Icons in columns Statusmap image and VRML image are broken:

 * Statusmap image uses

standard graphics format and Apache sends it as content-type=text/plain.
Even if the metadata were correct, gd2 will not be recognised by the
browser.

[Bug 559088] Re: qemu-kvm and guest kernel 2.6.24 sporadic boot fail: Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!

2010-04-16 Thread Chris Bainbridge
If the diagnosis I posted above is correct, then the frequency with
which this error appears will depend on both the virtualisation platform
(in this case the KVM host) and the guest kernel. We virtualise CentOS
4.4 systems (2.6.9 kernel) and my colleague reports that, in two years
of using VMware, he has not seen this error occur, and yet I can
reliably repeat it with some frequency under KVM using Ubuntu Karmic.

If you have seen the same problem using kernels =2.6.24, then maybe the
above diagnosis is incorrect. It would be useful to verify the diagnosis
by backporting the patch to the 2.6.9 kernel to find out whether it
fixes the problem, but I don't really have time to do that.

It is quite easy to set up a test system: install a guest OS with
poweroff in /etc/rc.local, and then write a script that loops calling
virsh start. Eventually the guest kernel will hang on boot, and you
can connect to the console.

[Bug 559088] [NEW] qemu-kvm and guest kernel 2.6.24 sporadic boot fail: Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!

2010-04-09 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

Booting Centos 4 with the default 2.6.9 kernel I get a sporadic error
maybe ~5% of the time:

ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs
..TIMER: vector=0x31 pin1=2 pin2=-1
..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC
...trying to set up timer (IRQ0) through the 8259A ... failed
...trying to set up timer as Virtual Wire IRQ... failed.
...trying to set up timer as ExtINT IRQ... failed :(.
Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug
and send a report. Then try booting with the 'noapic' option

This issue has been reported in the past on the linux-kvm mailing list but no
resolution was found.[1]
It appears that this bug may in fact be a bug handling interrupts on boot in
older kernels.[2] Interrupts were meant to be disabled in a 30ms window, but
were not. An interrupt arriving in this time will cause the kernel boot to
fail. Virtualization may make it more likely that this bug will appear now than
it used to on real hardware, since the model in which interrupts are delivered
to the kernel from the hardware is different. If this diagnosis is correct,
then the issue is very difficult to fix since it would require detecting that a
pre-2.6.24 kernel is in use, and managing the boot process so no interrupt is
delivered in the problematic window. The alternative is to just accept that

[Bug 535147] Re: libvirtd can't start qemu:///session domain - failed to set CPU affinity: Operation not permitted

2010-03-10 Thread Chris Bainbridge

libvir: QEMU error : failed to set CPU affinity: Operation not permitted

qemudInitCpus:1243 does:

if (sched_setaffinity(vm-vcpupids[i],
  sizeof(mask), mask)  0) {
virReportSystemError(conn, errno, %s,
 _(failed to set CPU affinity));
return -1;
}

$ man sched_setaffinity

EPERM (sched_setaffinity()) The calling process does not have
appropriate privileges. The caller
needs an effective user ID equal to the user ID or effective user
ID of the process identi‐
fied by pid, or it must possess the CAP_SYS_NICE capability.

So sched_setaffinity fails for qemu:///session because
/usr/sbin/libvirtd is run as a non-root user but the qemu VM is running
as root. In fact, this code could never have worked - has anyone ever
actually tested a qemu:///session VM before? It seems odd that this code
could ever get released.

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking

2010-03-09 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Kees: I know about the wiki page - I'm the one who edited it to note
this issue. It is not true that file capabilities only work in Lucid - I
am using Karmic and it works fine. libcap2-bin is also not a PAM
package. It is also not true that you need to manually add users to
/etc/security/capability.conf. I will corrrect these points in the Wiki.

It is true that with CAP_NET_ADMIN capability any user could boot a VM
and gain access to a virtual ethernet device. That's the whole point. I
would assume that the majority of people installing qemu would actually
want to be able to create bridged virtual ethernet devices. VirtualBox
allows normal users to create bridged ethernet devices that could be
used to disrupt networking. Why should qemu be different? If you are
concerned about users directly abusing the capability with their own
software then this is not possible - giving the qemu binary the
capability means that only that binary gets the capability - other
binaries executed by the same user do not get the capability. Access to
/dev/net/tun can still be controlled using standard file permissions as
usual.

Using a file capability would obviously be preferable as it would not
require individual users to be manually assigned the capability, and
could be done in postinst and would survive qemu package upgrades. The
only way someone could disrupt the network in this way is if they:

1) Were allowed to run qemu
2) Had rw access to /dev/net/tun
3) Had some exploit for qemu to allow them to run some arbitrary network
disrupting code

Basically, whatever potential problems there are, the same problems are
also present in VirtualBox, and yet that ships with working network
bridging for VMs (the mechanism is different, but the fundamental
problems are the same). Why can't qemu have working bridged networking?
Why not create a tun group that has rw access to /dev/net/tun if that
is the problem you are trying to avoid?

And if making the existing package work is unacceptable, then why not
create a qemu-kvm-working-bridged-networking package and recommend
that users who want bridged network use that instead?

[Bug 103010] Re: qemu no tun/tap networking

2010-03-08 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I'm sorry, this is not something that we can solve in the qemu-kvm
package that is in Ubuntu Main.

Why not? The standard Ubuntu kernel supports capabilities
(CONFIG_SECURITY_FILE_CAPABILITIES). It is obviously not desirable to
have qemu networking broken by default, or to tell users that they must
run qemu as root if they want networking to work. I'd imagine that most
people installing qemu would prefer that the qemu process be able to
create a TUN/TAP device instead of returning some odd error message.

You could, I suppose, submit a patch that adds another binary package
under the qemu-kvm source package that we put in Universe.

It seems odd to create a new package just to fix networking for non-root
users.

I've subscribed the Ubuntu Security Team. I'm curious for their
opinion on this.

From a security perspective, it is obviously better to give the qemu
process a single relatively harmless capability than to require all
users run qemu as root or suid root.

[Bug 522688] Re: /etc/init.d/libvirt-bin does not check that libvirtd has terminated on stop

2010-02-17 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Yes.

Do virsh save dom /tmp/x to hang libvirtd (bug #457716)
Then service libvirt-bin restart to restart libvirtd. It reports that the
service is running but this is not true - in fact the process has died without
reporting an error.
If I then run libvirtd manually I get:

# libvirtd
10:51:36.935: error : qemudWritePidFile:494 : Failed to open pid file
'/var/run/libvirtd.pid' : File exists

The return code of the libvirtd process is 1 - a failure - so the init
script should report fail but it does not.

Also /var/run/libvirtd.pid should be removed when the libvirtd process
isn't running anymore and before attempting to start libvirtd.

[Bug 522619] [NEW] libvirt launced kvm / qemu system processes run as root by default

2010-02-16 Thread Chris Bainbridge
Public bug reported:

Upstream recommends to use default user:group = qemu:qemu

From http://libvirt.org/drvqemu.html

In the system instance, libvirt releases from 0.7.0 onwards allow
control over the user/group that the QEMU virtual machines are run as. A
build of libvirt with no configuration parameters set will still run
QEMU processes as root:root. It is possible to change this default by
using the --with-qemu-user=$USERNAME and --with-qemu-group=$GROUPNAME
arguments to 'configure' during build. It is strongly recommended that
vendors build with both of these arguments set to 'qemu'.

This: https://www.redhat.com/archives/virt-tools-
list/2009-December/msg6.html suggests to check that libvirt was
compiled with interface support (using the netcf library) on both the
local and remote host

[Bug 520386] Re: libvirt-bin hypervisor does not support virConnectNumOfInterfaces / unable to create domain with virt-manager using network bridge

2010-02-11 Thread Chris Bainbridge
I think this bug also causes the virt-manager configuration of a virtual
network with forwarding to fail:

Host config - Virtual networks - Create a new virtual network -
Connecting to physical network - Forwarding to physical network -
Destination:Any physical device

Destination is a drop down that should list physical devices, but there
are no physical devices listed there. Presumably it uses the same
iface-list function to discover the actual devices.

also note that virt-manager under karmic will just fail on these
operations. virt-manager under lucid warns that Libvirt version does
not support physical interface listing if you browse to: Add new
virtual hardware - Network - Host device

[Bug 313575] Re: VMBuilder/vm.py crash on an alpha char in numeric constant

2010-02-10 Thread Chris Bainbridge
This bug still exists in karmic. You can use --mask 255.255.255.0 in
the vm-builder command line as a workaround.

[Bug 423653] Re: Openvpn + rkhunter + postfix = openvpn client not able to start

2009-10-12 Thread Chris Bainbridge
This bug looks like it could be the same as bug #437783

After install postfix says: Postfix was not set up. Start with cp
/usr/share/postfix/main.cf.debian /etc/postfix/main.cf

Doing this cp fixed the errors for me. Before that I would always get
the following on ifup/ifdown:

/usr/sbin/postconf: fatal: open /etc/postfix/main.cf: No such file or directory
cp: `/etc/resolv.conf' and `/etc/resolv.conf' are the same file
run-parts: /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/postfix exited with return code 1
run-parts: /etc/resolvconf/update.d/libc exited with return code 1

Fix: The file /etc/postfix/main.cf should be installed by default as
part of the postfix package, or all scripts that expect it to exist
should be updated to handle the case where it doesn't. In my case, I
never actually installed postfix, it was apparently a dependency of bsd-
mailx, which is a bit of a mystery as nothing I have installed seems to
depend on.
