[Bug 1686138] Re: purge-old-kernels is superseded by "apt autoremove"

2017-04-26 Thread Dustin Kirkland
That would certainly be nice! I'd be delighted to deprecate purge-old-
kernels.

However, the strange reality is that sometimes apt autoremove doesn't
catch all of the kernels that should/could be removed.

And apt behaves badly when your disk is already full (often due to many
gigs of of old kernels).

[Bug 1664748] Re: wifi connection drops, reconnects every 10 minutes

2017-02-17 Thread Dustin Kirkland
So I tried all three of those sysctl's and the problem is still
manifesting itself (every 10 minutes, Network Mananger pops up a
disconnected/reconnected message.

Moreover, I'll not that this problem does NOT exist in 14.04 (tested
with the same hardware, same wifi+ethernet, using a 14.04.5 LiveISO,
which uses the Xenial kernel (very close to the kernel I'm running here
on 16.04).

I really believe this problem is likely in Network Manager itself. I'm
reopening that task for now.

[Bug 1664751] [NEW] assign static ip from the web ui

2017-02-14 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

I'm looking at my list of known devices on the device page:
http://10.0.0.3/MAAS/#/nodes?tab=devices

And I see several devices which have IPs drawn from my dynamic range
(10.0.0.100-10.0.0.199).

I would really, really like to select any one of those (e.g.
playstation3.maas --> 10.0.0.197), and change it from a dynamic lease,
to a static lease (e.g. playstation3.maas --> 10.0.0.31).  And I'd
really, really like to do that from the GUI, as you can do with most any
home/office grade router that does DHCP and DNS.

Thanks!
Dustin

[Bug 1664748] [NEW] wifi connection drops, reconnects every 10 minutes

2017-02-14 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

I recently moved my home DHCP and DNS server over to MAAS (2.1.3 from
xenial-updates).

Since doing so, I've noticed that my wifi connection drops and
reconnects (with corresponding Unity pop-up notifications) exactly
every 10 minutes.

I suppose this is due to the fact that MAAS sets DHCP leases to 10
minutes by default?

Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

Is there a suitable workaround? Increasing the DHCP lease time?
Using static addresses? Something else?

[Bug 1621280] Re: pollinate can take a long time

2016-10-06 Thread Dustin Kirkland
The package in xenial-updates passes my post-boot testing. Appears to
be working fine here. To really complete this testing, though, Nish
will need to try this out in a custom built AMI with pollinate running
for the first time at boot in a public cloud.

+ [SRU] golang-petname-dev can't be installed anymore on Ubuntu 16.04

** Description changed:

This is because golang-petname-dev depends on a non-existing binary

+
+ SRU
+
+ [IMPACT]
+ This bug affects anyone with a build dependency in Xenial on
golang-petname-dev. As far as I'm aware, that's just the lxd package.
+
+ [TEST CASE]
+ Simply 'sudo apt install golang-petname-dev'. Without this fix, it will fail
to install, as reported above. With the fix, it will successfully install.
You might also want to list the contents of the package with 'dpkg -L
golang-petname-dev' and ensure that the file
/usr/share/gocode/src/github.com/dustinkirkland/golang-petname/petname.go is
installed, which is what is necessary for a xenial build.
+
+
+ [REGRESSION]
+ There should be no regression, as the package is currently not even
installable.

[Bug 1565275] Re: Add support to import multiple keys

2016-09-16 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Hmm, I'm unable to reproduce this bug.

I just tried:

$ ssh-import-id -o - kirkland smoser > /tmp/out

And got both kirkland's and smoser's keys.

That's with ssh-import-id version 5.5-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 1615143] Re: [SRU] update python-petname and golang-petname libraries in xenial

2016-08-19 Thread Dustin Kirkland
** Description changed:

  Please backport/update/SRU the golang-petname and python-petname
packages in Xenial to the new ones from Yakety. These are needed for
the MAAS 2.0 and LXD 2.0 builds. The new model uses much simpler, more
pronouncable and memorable names -- a critical complaint of current MAAS
  and LXD randomly generated names.

Note that this update is 100% API compatible.
+
+ == SRU ==
+
+ [Impact]
+ The impact of this bug is that MAAS and LXD generally produce really
complicated, unpronouceable random names, like:
+ - polyvinylidene-latesha
+ - quarantinable-ayesha
+ - troglodytical-flor
+
+ The new petname methodology uses animals, has been meticulously curated, and
undergoes a thorough series of quality tests. New petnames look like this:
+ - suited-mallard
+ - pure-ringtail
+ - calm-shark
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ To test this, you can install the new golang-petname, python-petname, and
python3-petname packages and simply run:
+ $ golang-petname
+ novel-muskox
+ $ python-petname
+ giving-shrew
+ $ python3-petname
+ new-mole
+
+ Each of these build against the library (golang, python3) that MAAS and LXD
use.
+
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ Minimal. The only difference in behavior is that the new methodology
+ produces far fewer unique combinations (~200K vs. ~200M). I've already
+ discussed this with the MAAS and LXD maintainers.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ None.

I can add a "suggests" but not a recommends or depends, on the Byobu
side. You see, when Byobu is installed on a server, you're usually
ssh'ing in from somewhere else.

terminal|xterm.

[Bug 1605635] [NEW] [SRU] Please backport pollen

2016-07-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

Please backport pollen version >=4.21 to Trusty and Xenial.

[Impact]
We need a newer version of pollen running on entropy.ubuntu.com. Canonical IS
requires that the package be updated in trusty-updates in order for this to
happen. We need a couple of things fixed: improved error logging and entropy
available monitoring,

[Test Case]
Start a new Ubuntu instance (trusty, xenial). sudo apt install pollen
pollinate. Then, try running pollinate against localhost: 'sudo pollinate -r
-s http://localhost:80'. Also, check that an appropriate message is logged in
/var/log/syslog. grep pollen /var/log/syslog.

[Regression Potential]
The regression potential is mostly around the upstart/systemd jobs. We should
just be sure that the service starts/stops/restarts cleanly, and comes up
automatically at boot.

[Bug 1494837] Re: check_pollen is broken

2016-07-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Hrm, I think that's right. This does mean that the check_nagios script
must run on the same machine as the pollen server. It's searching for
the pollen server messages on the local system's /var/log/syslog.

[Bug 1593625] Re: [SRU] add pollinate to precise, update all

2016-07-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
** Description changed:

- Please backport/SRU pollinate to 12.04 LTS.
+ Please backport/SRU pollinate to 12.04 LTS, and update pollinate in
+ 14.04 LTS and 16.04 LTS.
+
+ [Impact]
+ Pollinate doesn't exist in 12.04 LTS, but should. It has been steady and
solid throughout the 14.04 and 16.04 releases of Ubuntu, improving the PRNG
keys in cloud instances. And there are still plenty of Precise cloud instances
out there. This upload also fixes a couple of bugs (which are already well
validated on 16.04) in terms of when the systemd job runs, not running in
containers, logging the correct PID, and timing out correctly.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Pollinate can be tested on an existing system by specifying the -r|--reseed
option. 'sudo pollinate -r' should exit 0 and appropriate, successful log
messages should be displayed. You can also test the boot time run by removing
the seeded flag with 'sudo rm -f /var/cache/pollinate/seeded', rebooting, and
then 'grep pollinate /var/log/syslog'.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Regression potential should be low, as entropy seeding is opportunistic.
Boot should never hang or block. At most, it should add a second or two to
boot, and it should fail gracefully, logging to syslog, and retrying again at
each reboot.

[Bug 1578833] Re: pollinate should not run in containers and only for first boot

2016-05-06 Thread Dustin Kirkland
** Description changed:

Booting a xenial cloud image in lxd shows that pollinate by far is the
  biggest bottleneck:

  $ systemd-analyze blame
- 2.756s pollinate.service
-656ms cloud-init-local.service
-598ms cloud-init.service
-509ms cloud-config.service
-393ms cloud-final.service
-147ms networking.service
+   2.756s pollinate.service
+    656ms cloud-init-local.service
+    598ms cloud-init.service
+    509ms cloud-config.service
+    393ms cloud-final.service
+    147ms networking.service
  [...]

This is the second boot, so cloud-init should not actually do anything
any more (it takes muuuch longer on the first boot).

pollinate should not run in containers at all, as containers take
randomness from the host. Also, for VMs it should only run for the first
boot. Both upstart and systemd save the random seed on shutdown and load
it at boot, which is a lot faster than pollinate.

  So pollinate.service should grow

- ConditionVirtualization=!container
- ConditionPathExists=!/var/lib/systemd/random-seed
+   ConditionVirtualization=!container
+   ConditionPathExists=!/var/lib/systemd/random-seed
+
+ == SRU ==
+
+ [IMPACT]
+ Some Xenial boots take longer than they should. Pollinate should only run
once, at first boot, and never in containers. And should never take longer
than 3 seconds.
+
+ [TEST CASE]
+ Boot a new Xenial instance. Ensure that pollinate runs the first time it
boots. You can check that in /var/log/syslog and ensure that
/var/cache/pollinate/seeded exists /var/cache/pollinate/log. Now reboot that
instance. Ensure that more, new entries do *not* show up.
+
+ [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
+ The regression potential is important. We need to ensure that we don't
somehow *never* pollinate the first time.

[Bug 1554152] Re: pollinate fails in many circumstances, cloud-init reports that failure, maas reports node failed deployment

2016-03-07 Thread Dustin Kirkland
bzr commit -m '* pollinate, pollinate.1: LP: #1554152
  - change the failure mode of pollinate, so as to more cleanly
tolerate network failures
  - add a --strict option to re-enable the previous behavior,
ie, strictly exit non-zero if pollinate fails for any reason
  - we've always promised that pollinate would operate on a best-effort
basis, improving the prng seeding when possible, but failing
gracefully when not possible; as such, we've made good on the first
half of that promise, however, the latter half has proven
troublesome; this is due to the fact that if pollinate exits
non-zero, then its callers (cloud-init, maas, etc.) may well
interpret the behavior strictly as a failure to boot the system,
when in fact that's not the case; instead, we'll clearly print
a warning to syslog, and we'll retry the seeding on next pollinate
service start (e.g. a reboot); moreover, we'll carry a --strict
flag in the case that users want to opt into the previous behavior' --fixes

[Bug 1552790] [NEW] FFe: docker.io 1.10.2 upload to xenial

2016-03-03 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

This is a request for a Feature Freeze Exception for uploading docker.io
into Xenial Universe.

The version we currently have in Xenial is very old and out of date
(1.6.2). It's taken us a bit longer to get Docker up and packaged for
Xenial for all architectures than we expected. However, we're just
about done with it now.

We'd like to upload here this week.

We have test packages now in: ppa:docker/experimental.

Thanks,
Dustin

[Bug 1533639] Re: [ubuntu-cpc] please make /tmp a tmpfs in RAM

2016-01-14 Thread Dustin Kirkland
** Description changed:

In Ubuntu, we clear /tmp on every boot.

As such, on servers, by default /tmp should actually be a tmpfs entirely
- in RAM.
+ in RAM, when there is enough memory in the system. This threshold
+ should be configurable by the end user (in cloud-init?), and default
+ threshold of ~2GB.

  This has several advantages, mainly:
   * Performance - much faster read/write access to data in /tmp
   * Security - sensitive data would be cleared from memory on boot, rather
than written (leaked) to disk -- important for encryption scenarios
   * Power consumption - storing information in memory is more energy efficient
than reading and writing to disk

In scenarios where more space in /tmp is needed than available, one can
compliment that tmpfs with 'sudo apt-get install swapspace' which will
  dynamically create/delete swapfile as necessary.
