[Bug 1529033] [NEW] Install/start fails when hostname is numeric

2015-12-24 Thread Joseph Santaniello
Public bug reported:

If a machine has a hostname made up entirely of numbers, install and
start will fail reporting:

ERROR: epmd error for host "1234": badarg (unknown POSIX error)

This can be duplicated:

hostame 1234
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost 1234 > /etc/hosts
apt-get install rabbitmq-server

results in:

Setting up rabbitmq-server (3.2.4-1) ...
 * Starting message broker rabbitmq-server
* FAILED - check
/var/log/rabbitmq/startup_\{log, _err\}

[fail]
invoke-rc.d: initscript rabbitmq-server, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package rabbitmq-server (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Processing triggers for ureadahead (0.100.0-16) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 rabbitmq-server
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

But try:

hostname testing
echo 127.0.0.1 testing > /etc/hosts
apt-get install rabbitmq-server

and it works.

I'm not sure if this is a rabbitmq-server "bug" or an epmd (I always
chuckle when I write that...) bug, but it cropped up when installing
rabbitmq-server to play with OpenStack so I figured I'd submit it here.

2015-10-24 Thread Joseph Bisch
I added the Debian guest related commits to
https://code.launchpad.net/~josephbisch/vmbuilder/debian. I also added
Debian Stretch and tested out creating a KVM image of it.

I notice that my full name doesn't show up in the list of revisions like
it does for other people. I guess I don't have my local bzr program
configured correctly. If it is significant, I can try fixing it.

[Bug 235562] Re: Add ability to build Debian virtual machines

2015-10-19 Thread Joseph Bisch
I have a fork that intends to add Debian guest support. Right now it is
only tested with KVM (because that is just what I need). Also I only
tested it with Jessie images, so it might not work with every Debian
suite as the guest, particularly with older suites.

It serves my purpose of adding support for Debian guest KVM images to
gitian-builder. But it would be nice if my changes were upstreamed. I
assume that images other than KVM don't currently work for Debian guests
in my fork and that the upstream maintainers would probably want all
image types to be supported before merging in any of my changes, but I
figured it would be good to start a dialog at this point.

Let me know what it would take to upstream these changes.

This bug affects gitian-builder when used with lxc. Gitian-builder is
the reproducible build tools used by Bitcoin Core and other projects.
The relevant gitian-builder bug is https://github.com/devrandom/gitian-

I have confirmed this bug with a 15.04 chroot. As you can see from the
gitian-builder issue, GitHub user @droark also experienced the issue
when using 15.04.

The relevant output from my 15.04 chroot:

I found a way to reproduce this bug and am currently bisecting it.

15.04 can be installed using the Fast Installer. This will work
without causing a panic on install.

I then installed the intel-gpu-tools test package. Using the following
test from intel-gpu-tools will cause the panic:

kms_pipe_crc_basic --run-subtest hang-read-crc-pipe-B

okay I'm an idiot: 'grub-legacy-ec2' is a binary package. This bug has
been assigned to its source package 'cloud-init' instead. so this is the

There seems to be a few commits that are needed to cherry-pick 4a46b24

Is using the Utopic backport kernel for Trusty(14.04.2) an option?

[Bug 1377924] Re: ecryptfs fails to mount (Unable to link the KEY_SPEC_USER_KEYRING into the KEY_SPEC_SESSION_KEYRING)

2014-10-28 Thread joseph spitz
I am also getting this error, and like Eugene says, it seems to be
dependent on the environment in which the mount command is executed.

I attempted to mount from inside a tmux session, and the mount failed.
I detached from the tmux session, issued the very same mount command in
a plain ssh terminal, and the mount succeeded.

[Bug 1279041] Re: /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_reserved_ports not writable because of apparmor

2014-06-13 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during
any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all.
Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request
further testing. This is such a request.

  With the recent release of this Ubuntu release, would like to confirm
if this bug is still present. Please test again with the newer kernel
and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the
following commands in a terminal window:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to
Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from
Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add
a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

 Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

It should be noted that upstream is not planning on making another SDL
1.2 release. They are building a compatibility API for SDL 2.0 instead.
We should apply this patch until that compatibility API is ready.

[Bug 1280665] [NEW] libsdl1.2 always uses backingstore which causes tearing in modern X servers

2014-02-15 Thread Joseph Yasi
Public bug reported:

libsdl1.2 always enables backingstore when it is present in the X
server. For modern X servers, backingstore is implemented by redirecting
through the composite extension. This causes tearing on SDL applications
such as xbmc because the redirected rendering is not guaranteed to be
synchronized.

A discussion of the problem by Nvidia is here:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/679688/linux/tearing-in-sdl-1-2
-apps-unless-composite-extension-is-completely-
disabled-/post/4111287/#4111287

The upstream bug is here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=74158

I have a patch that restores a check for the SDL_VIDEO_X11_BACKINGSTORE
environment variable before trying to enable backingstore.

[Bug 1268906] Re: cpu soft lockup running kvm

2014-01-22 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This
will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the
introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.
If this is a regression, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the
commit that introduced the problem.

[Bug 1226855] Re: Cannot use open-iscsi inside LXC container

2013-09-27 Thread Elizabeth Krumbach Joseph
Thanks for your reply, I'll chat with Robert and Clint to see if any of
these solutions is reasonable for us.

As a reference point, here's the setup we're using:

Host has 2 VMs: An LXC and an qemu VM

The host has the iscsi_tcp module loaded, which then can be seen and
used for the iscsi daemon within the container.

Now, what we're attempting to do is provision the qemu VM via the LXC
container using OpenStack's baremetal provisioning tools in a
virtualized environment (no nested KVM!), so loosely the procedure is:
the LXC container boots the qemu image (we have a nifty power driver)
and gives it an address via dnsmasq-dhcp, loads up some things via
dnsmasq-tftp (this all works) and then we use iscsi to copy data to the
qemu VM. Robert or Clint can chime in with more details (or to
clarify/correct!).

Today I ran through the test again and connected to the iscsid daemon
inside the container for your strace, attached is the output from:
strace -p 1488 -o iscsid_strace_baremetal.txt

** Attachment added: iscsid_strace_baremetal.txt

2013-08-22 Thread Joseph Salisbury
@James Page, Did this bug just start happening after a new kernel
update? Was there a prior kernel that did not get this fault? If so,
we can perform a bisect to identify the commit that introduced the
regression.

Also, the 3.11.0-3.7 kernel is now available, which is rebased to
upstream v3.11-rc6. Can you test this latest kernel to confirm it still
exhibits this bug?

Per comment #13, it sounds like this issue is resolved in the 3.11

exist in Saucy, or should the bug be targeted to other releases as well?

[Bug 1196295] Re: lxc-start enters uninterruptible sleep

2013-07-17 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Thanks for testing the upstream kernel. One additional question. Was
there a previous kernel version that did not exhibit this issue? It
would be good to know if this is a regression. If it is, we can perform
a bisect to identify the commit that introduced it.

[Bug 1088053] Re: Kernel needs to provide FIFREEZE/FITHAW ioctl so that open-vm-dkms can build

2012-12-12 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Hi Nate,

It appears FIFREEZE AND FITHAW are already built into the kernel.

Here is the defines in ~/linux/include/linux/fs.h(Also in
~linux/include/uapi/linux/fs.h):
#define FIFREEZE_IOWR('X', 119, int)/* Freeze */
#define FITHAW  _IOWR('X', 120, int)/* Thaw */

In ~linux/fs/ioctl.c, there is a switch for FIFREEZE AND FITHAW:
do_vfs_ioctl()

   case FIFREEZE:
error = ioctl_fsfreeze(filp);
break;

case FITHAW:
error = ioctl_fsthaw(filp);
break;

These switch statements then call ioctl_fsfreeze() or ioctl_fsthaw():
static int ioctl_fsfreeze(struct file *filp)
{
struct super_block *sb = filp-f_path.dentry-d_inode-i_sb;

if (!capable(CAP_SYS_ADMIN))
return -EPERM;

/* If filesystem doesn't support freeze feature, return. */
if (sb-s_op-freeze_fs == NULL)
return -EOPNOTSUPP;

/* Freeze */
return freeze_super(sb);
}

ioctl_fsfreeze() then does a check to see if freeze is supported by the
filesystem.

Do you have a more complete log of the failure you are seeing when
vmsync doesn't compile? If it was working prior to the v3.6 kernel,
then that would also indicate this is a regression versus a new feature
request.

[Bug 1054129] Re: reboot with -vga cirrus can result in broken output

2012-09-25 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Thanks, Serge. It would be good to know if the bug goes away if you
boot the precise kernel in the quantal vm. That will tell us if this is
a regression. If it is, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the
commit in Quantal that introduced the regression.

[Bug 1054129] Re: reboot with -vga cirrus can result in broken output

2012-09-21 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-
upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the
other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next
to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
Confirmed.

Thanks in advance.

Does this issue go away if you boot into the kernel prior to the
upgrade?
