I am very interested in making this happen and in also making sure that
the PHP community is able to respond quickly and to help if there's
anything that can be done to make this happen. As has been discussed,
most PECL packages are ready for PHP 7, PEAR is now much less widely
used in PHP since most projects will bring userland dependencies in via
Composer. I notice however that the php-pear package is still depending
on PHP 5, so I can't say how well either PEAR or PECL will work with the
PHP 7 packages that have already been worked on (and which look awesome,
thanks!)

Thanks to everyone contributing to this, I am watching the issue and
will be happy to help in practical terms in any way that needs helping.
