[Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2016-03-29 Thread Nicolas Diogo
about running the OPENVPN via command-line

it is possible to have the option of using a file with the USERNAME & PASSWORD
for the OPENVPN stored in a safe location (if you believe that!)

you can add the following into the config:

auth-user-pass {fullpath to file with USERNAME & PASSWORD}

this file should only contain 2 line: the first with the USERNAME & the 2nd
with the PASSWORD

Good Luck!

[Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2016-03-29 Thread Nicolas Diogo
Really OpenVPN is not a high enough priority for Canonical to have it fixed in
over 2 years ?!

I thought Ubuntu was supposed to be a replacement OS for businesses ...

anyhow, it is possible to run the configurations using the command line.

It is a joke to explain to users of other 'OSes' that Ubuntu does not
have a GUI that works with OPENVPN.

Apologies for the ranting ... but I do believe it to be necessary.

Simon,

The DNS error was a transient one, so not relevant here. The --up script
is the distro standard one and I modified the connection script to
include the "script-security 2" config that was before a OPTARGS from
/etc/default/openvpn.

The /etc/default/openvpn way was the documented way pre-15.04.

Yes, it solves the problem. I thought I reported that before. The
problem is the migration mechanism that has to be corrected. The way I
used "--script-security 2" was the one put forward in the official doc.

The problem shall be the same for the migration 14.04 -> 16.04 (I
presume).

[Bug 995332] Re: Please enhance NetworkManager such that DNSSEC validation is done whenever possible

2016-01-02 Thread Nicolas Delvaux
On Wily, I edited /etc/dnsmasq.d/network-manager and added the following
lines:

# DNSSEC setup
dnssec
trust-anchor=.,19036,8,2,49AAC11D7B6F6446702E54A1607371607A1A41855200FD2CE1CDDE32F24E8FB5
dnssec-check-unsigned

I then restarted network-manager and tried to connect to
http://www.dnssec-failed.org/.
As expected, the site does not load (it is deliberately configured to fail
DNSSEC validation).
But when reloading the page multiple-time, it is sometime displayed! I don't
understand why.

Yes you're right. Here is an updated tar file with all patches (the first four
patches are the same).
The following patches are added:
- 9614acf4c435 lib/nl: preserve s_local if nl_connect() fails
  https://github.com/thom311/libnl/commit/9614acf4c435
- f78c3e82398a socket: clear port when unable to generate local port
  https://github.com/thom311/libnl/commit/f78c3e82398a
- 96e1e5bdc2e8 socket: add fallback for nl_connect() by trying to bind to
unspecified local port
  https://github.com/thom311/libnl/commit/96e1e5bdc2e8
- eaa75b7c7d3e socket: fix assertion in nl_connect() when all ports are already
in use
  https://github.com/thom311/libnl/commit/eaa75b7c7d3e

With this new series:
root@ubuntu1404:~# python ./libnl3-test-rh1249158.py a b c d
ulimit(NOFILE) = (2048, 4096)
Test: PID=25856

The enclosed tar file contains the updated test script and the 4 patches
that can be applied cleanly over the ubuntu libnl3-3.2.21.

Before the patches:

gcc -o example -I/usr/include/libnl3 example.c -lnl-3 -lnl-genl-3
set manually the local port to 15754 (pid: 15753)
local port has been set by the libnl to 15754 (pid: 15754)
genl_connect(): Object exists (local port: 15754, pid: 15754)
failure

After the patches:
$ if ./example.sh ; then echo success ; else echo failure ; fi
gcc -o example -I/usr/include/libnl3 example.c -lnl-3 -lnl-genl-3
set manually the local port to 15768 (pid: 15767)
local port has been set by the libnl to 432029080 (pid: 15768)
success

which is on 3.2.26, so this bug affects 14.04 only?

Yes.

>I'm concerned that this changes library behaviour. How can we be sure
that no existing users of libnl will not be regressed by this change in
behaviour if we backport this to 14.04?

This does not change the library behavior. It fixes a real bug. Without this
fix, the user has to manage the port id itself. And the only consequence is to
increase the probability to show the bug in another application. It's a domino
effect. There is two options:
1/ patching all applications that use the libnl
2/ fixing the libnl

>Thanks, this is useful. But can you take us through to actual user
impact of this bug, please? I'm sure you have a concrete case for
wanting this, but so far this explanation is hypothetical. In what
concrete case on 14.04 does an application manually chose a port id that
then causes a conflict and causes a problem for a user?

Yes, I have a concrete case, but it's with a non FOSS application. It's not
hypothetical, we hit the bug regularly. And as explained above, trying to fix
the impacted applications is a wasted effort because it increases the
probability to show the bug in another applications.
FWIW, these patches have been backported by redhat, you can found more info

[Bug 1511735] Re: libnl: fail to bind() netlink sockets

2015-12-10 Thread Nicolas Dichtel
It affects ubuntu-14.04, libnl version 3.2.21
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libnl-3-200)
The first libnl upstream release which includes these patches is 3.2.25.

The problem happens when the libnl choose a port id already used by
another application. The libnl fails instead of trying another port id.

Please find enclosed a script to reproduce the problem:
$ ./example.sh
gcc -o example -I/usr/include/libnl3 example.c -lnl-3 -lnl-genl-3
set manually the local port to 12145 (pid: 12144)
local port has been set by the libnl to 12145 (pid: 12145)
genl_connect(): Object exists (local port: 12145, pid: 12145)

The first instance of example sets manually the port id to pid+1.
The second instance of example let the libnl calculate automatically the port
id. It chooses by default the pid, which is already used.

To summarize, if an application on the system chooses manually a port id
(because it does not use the libnl or because it sets it manually), it
may conflict with applications that use libnl and prevent them to work
properly.

[Bug 1504781] Re: lxc-test-ubuntu hangs forever in trusty-proposed with Linux 3.13.0-66: AppArmor denies /dev/ptmx mounting

2015-10-20 Thread Nicolas Delvaux
@Stephen: I had the same problem after today's upgrade.
Activating the proposed repository and upgrading lxc to version
1.0.7-0ubuntu0.9 fixed the issue for me.

See comment #11 for details.

But it's a shame this proposed fix was not released to everyone before
the new kernel.

[Bug 916200] Re: Kernel module ipmi_si fails to load

2014-06-10 Thread Nicolas Krzywinski
This is just an information for those that come to here due to matching
search engine keywords, it is only partially related to this bug, so all
others please ignore this.

If your system does not power off at all (including hang at reboot) you may
have fallen into this trap:
- install ipmitool
- recognise that your system does not meet the requirements for ipmi_si
(matching errors as described above)
- remove ipmitool

Now ipmi_si is still present in the system and you can see the
correspondig startup messages in system.log and it seems to be able to
prevent poweroff.

Solution: PURGE ipmitool (and maybe openipmi as well - at least there
was remaining configuration present in my system for this package as
well and therefore I purged it additionally).

After that, my system was able to reboot again and was able to completely
poweroff on its own:

I know the workaround. But we're here on a bug report platform ... I
posted to say hey, the problem is still here in 12.04!

Best regards,

[Bug 970782] [NEW] Please merge new upstream dovecot version 2.0.18-1

2012-04-01 Thread Nicolas DERIVE
Public bug reported:

Hi, I think it would be great to have latest Debian testing release of
dovecot (if not the last upstream one, which is 2.0.18), because of
important bug fixes:

Last upstream release only :

v2.0.19 2012-03-15 Timo Sirainen t...@iki.fi

- IMAP: ENABLE CONDSTORE/QRESYNC + STATUS for a mailbox might not
have seen latest external changes to it, like new mails.
- imap_id_* settings were ignored before login.
- doveadm altmove did too much work sometimes, retrying moves
  it had already done.
- mbox: Fixed accessing Dovecot v1.x mbox index files without errors.

Last Debian testing release:

v2.0.18 2012-02-12 Timo Sirainen t...@iki.fi

+ DIGEST-MD5 authentication supports authorization id now.
  Patch by Yubao Liu
+ Added instance_name setting which is used to prefix Dovecot
  processes in ps output.
- LDA/LMTP: Sending a large mail via submission_host or via LMTP proxy
  may have caused a hang.
- Fixed dbox + mail_attachment_dir + zlib problems.
- Login processes weren't logging all intended messages with
  auth_verbose=yes
- IMAP: THREAD REFS sometimes returned invalid (0) nodes.
- IMAP: CONTEXT search return option wasn't handled at all.
- dbox: Various error handling fixes.
- snarf plugin: Keep the mailbox locked during snarfing to avoid
  duplicates.

v2.0.17 2012-01-06 Timo Sirainen t...@iki.fi

+ Proxying now supports sending SSL client certificate to server with
  ssl_client_cert/key settings.
+ doveadm dump: Added support for dumping dbox headers/metadata.
- Fixed memory leaks in login processes with SSL connections
- vpopmail support was broken in v2.0.16

v2.0.16 2011-11-17 Timo Sirainen t...@iki.fi

* VSZ limits weren't being enforced for any processes. On server with
large mailboxes you may now see errors about it if the limits aren't
  high enough. To fix them, either increase individual service {
vsz_limit } values or simply increase the default_vsz_limit setting.
* Proxying: If using ssl=yes or starttls=yes with a hostname (not IP)
as proxy destination, require that the certificate matches the given
  hostname.
* LMTP: Changed default client_limit to 1. This should improve LMTP
  throughput with default settings.
* dsync: Quota is no longer enforced (i.e. dsync can't fail because
  user is over quota).

+ Added auto mail storage driver, which can be used to autodetect
mailbox location and format. This behavior is already the default
for empty mail_location setting, so this change is mainly useful for
  shared namespace's location setting.
+ checkpassword: Export all auth %variables to AUTH_* environment.

We have two choices: Import latest upstream release (with latest fixes) or
latest Debian release. But in both cases, we should resynchronise pigeonhole
patches with Debian in order to have latest pigeonhole fixes too.

It would be great to have latest rrdtool synced from Debian into Precise
as it will potentially be used on many servers.

It seems reasonably safe and without massive new features changes:

   * [b59bb994] Merge commit 'upstream/1.4.7'
   * [8acead25] Refreshing patches, dropping bts625631-gcc4.5.
   * [75b42449] Ack NMU.
Thanks to Luk Claes (Closes: #619688)
   * [e11e1d9e] Migrate to dh_python2.

The upstream 1.4.7 version (after 1.4.4, 1.4.5 and 1.4.6 we and Debian
missed) is the latest of important bugfix releases (the number of fixes
is impressive, see http://rrd-mailinglists.937164.n2.nabble.com/RRDtool-
Announcements-f937719.xml), so it's really a great reason to have it.

[Bug 964304] Re: Please merge new upstream rrdtool version 1.4.7-1 from Debian Unstable into Precise

2012-03-24 Thread Nicolas DERIVE
It should be safe to drop all Ubuntu changes I think, except this one:

  * Build-depend on libdbi-dev rather than libdbi0-dev (LP: #625882).

If necessary, I can make a bzr branch to merge.

[Bug 721207] Re: Dependance problem install openssh server

2011-03-02 Thread Nicolas de Marqué
Hello Chris,

As i have say, you have take the good decision to close with little
problem.

But, I don't think this problem is invalid , this problem seems
corrected but has existed. So i think the status must be Fix Released
and not Invalid.

Even this problem was shortly corrected, on the root servers or on the
mirror. It can be interessant to save this to make statistics and to
consequently to correct the process which have create it.

And if this desync is an exception, i think this is a bad idea to make
as this isn't exist.

So this decision must be take by the launchpad team, i let you choice.

Best regard,
Nicolas

Even use apt-get update, this cannot work, when in create this bug.

I found the solution to install the package with aptitude which proposed
to downgrade the openssh-client package.

[Bug 573853] Re: Cannot control squid Unknown instance

2010-08-29 Thread Nicolas Jungers
I solved it for my case by reducing the shutdown_lifetime to 1 seconds in
/etc/squid/squid.conf and modifying the
script in /etc/resolvconf/update-libc.d/squid to replace

restart squid
by
stop squid;sleep 1;start squid

Which defeat the restart intended behavior but doesn't need to wait
forever. Could upstart directly get the value of shutdown_lifetime
from the squid configuration file?

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2010-05-17 Thread Nicolas M
Right, let me precise a bit more what I’m doing.
I have a home network with various W$ and Ubuntu PCs + a Mandriva (2007)
server.
This server is used for sharing files, printing, scanning, photo/videos web
pages, ssh…
Due to variety of OSes, file sharing between W$ PCs and this server uses SMB
(Ubuntu PCs use mostly ssh folders).

Samba is installed on the server, the Mandriva (and formerly Mandrake)
configuration is very close to what explained in the “Using Samba” book:
Both nmbd and smbd daemons are started at boot time.

Now, with Ubuntu, here is what I get, with standard nmbd and smbd conf files :
- At boot time : only smbd started.
- nmbd must be started manually or samba restarted when network is up
to have nmbd + smbd operational.
- If only smbd is running, file sharing on the server is *not*
working: the server is visible from the PCs, but impossible to enter workgroup
or shares (they are not visible).
- If nmbd (and smbd) started, then SMB/Samba file sharing works at 100%

As I explain, due to Wifi, network will come up only after boot (and after nmbd
start).
Having smbd running without nmbd is useless, at least, in my case.
I don't understand exactly, why we do not start nmbd, even if no network avail:
Other daemons using the network *are* started at boot (e.g., ntpd, sshd, ...)
even if no network is available.

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2010-05-17 Thread Nicolas M
Following your guidelines, I think I understand better how nmbd is
behaving.

nmbd is started after a user logs in, and if the network-manager is
running.

In fact, as I'm setting a server, I configured the Wifi so that it could
connect with wpa_supplicant at the end of boot, but I did not use the
network-manager for that (I used wpa_supplicant with configuration
file).

Bad idea, as there seems to be some logic between network-manager and
nmbd. nmbd starts when a net I/F goes up in this case.

And I need to have Wifi and nmbd running, even if no one is logged in.

So probably will have to cope with the network-manager, and see how I
can configure Wifi (maybe with wpa_cli ?) to set the wlan interface
through the network-manager. In this case, I hope seeing nmbd start
automatically when the wifi interface comes up, as when a user logs into
Gnome.

Thanks anyway for your help !

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2010-05-16 Thread Nicolas M
Excuse me to enter this thread lately, but something looks weird to me
here.

I've just experienced the same issue with Lucid, trying to set up samba server,
on a Wifi hooked laptop.
With current samba-server package, result after Lucid boots is:

- smbd is running
- nmbd is not running

leading to samba and W$ networking failing.

Following the advices given in this thread, I can read, at the beginning
of these 2 files:

- /etc/init/smbd.conf:
start on local-filesystems

- /etc/init/nmbd.conf:
start on (local-filesystems and net-device-up IFACE!=lo)

From what I understand here, we let smbd start at boot in any case, but
nmbd only if a network I/F is up (?)

For a Wifi laptop, a network interface will only be up, after a user
logs in, and activates Wifi using network-manager applet. During or just
after boot, Wifi is off.

So I just changed nmbd.conf start statement to look exactly as smbd.conf
one (i.e.: start on local-filesystems), and now both smbd *and* nmbd
gets started at boot, and samba sharing starts fine as soon as Wifi is
up after a user logs in.

= So my question here: why having a different startup condition for
smbd and nmbd, as both daemons need to be running for samba to operate ?

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2010-05-16 Thread Nicolas M
Ok Steve, not being a Samba guru, was just trying to figure this out.

After having browsed through the well known Using Samba
(http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/toc.html), I did not get
this understanding of smbd versus nmbd.

I've been using Samba like that (smbd+nmbd, with or without network) on
a home server for several years, and on the way now to migrating the
whole thing on Ubuntu.

Just sharing this information, that loading nmbd at boot, even with no network,
did solve the problem for me.
I did not notice nmbd too much complaining about no network, here is the log I
get in log.nmbd, looks like nmbd just sits and waits for a network I/F to come
up:

   nmbd version 3.4.7 started.

[Bug 158816] Re: auto.smb acts weird when smbfs is not installed

2009-10-16 Thread Nicolas Joyard
This bug is reproducible:
1. Ensure smbfs is not installed (or uninstall it if it is)
2. cd /auto.smb_base_dir/some_server
3. ls displays the shared folder list on the server
4. cd some_shared_folder
5. ls

Observed behaviour:
The second ls command displays the shared folder list on the server.

Expected behaviour:
The second cd command should fail, displaying an error message that explains
the shared folder cannot be mounted because of the missing smbfs package.

[Bug 427539] Re: [FFe] Sync libmaven packages from Debian unstable

2009-10-14 Thread Nicolas Dumoulin
I use daily maven2, and I agree that a solution should be found
urgently: fix or remove, but decide what to do.

For instance, I keep the old version of plexus
(libplexus-container-default-java_1.0-alpha-9-stable-1-2_all.deb) and all is
working fine.
I haven't understand why this new version of libplexus is needed ?

i checked the diff between the jaunty and the karmic version and i can only

a) colin's debian patch is making this break (using READ and WRITE respectively

b) is a bug in libkrb5-3

[Bug 294148] Re: move_uploaded_file does not set right permissions (ignores umask)

2009-03-04 Thread Nicolas
Hi,

I am experiencing the same problem since I upgraded my server (I only
upgraded a couple of week ago, the system is on production for about 6
months).

My server is running Ubuntu 8.04. The version of PHP5 I am using is:

r...@hosting:~# php-cgi -v
PHP 5.2.4-2ubuntu5.5 with Suhosin-Patch 0.9.6.2 (cgi-fcgi) (built: Feb 11 2009
20:02:50)
Copyright (c) 1997-2007 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.2.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2007 Zend Technologies

Problem is: files uploaded through a PHP upload form and then moved with
move_uploaded_file are given a umask of 0002 insted of 0022.

[Bug 42947] Re: postfix: fatal: /etc/postfix/postfix-script: No such file or directory

2008-05-23 Thread nicolas
Daniel thanks very much for your work. I'm very pleased to see that
someone is looking at this issue!

If you have removed postfix (without purging), and then removed the
/etc/postfix directory manually, this is expected to fail (=no
installation of the config files again).

Full ACK!

aptitude remove --purge is the same as only aptitude remove -
seems to be a bug (filed as bug 234184): --purge gets recognized, but
ignored.

ahhh this changes a lot. I totally agree with you, that the behavior is
ok when I remove the /etc/postfix directory manually. I was just totally
confused, because aptitude remove --purge didn't help. That was the
only reason why I thought, that the package is buggy. But after reading
bug 234184 I totally agree, that this bug is invalid.

Thanks to point me to bug 234184 this solves my concern.

Kind regards nicolas
