Ok. Note that I have since fixed the smb.conf file by removing wins
support as I mentioned previously. If you want the tests above with wins
support enabled let me know.

However please note that I did not change the smb.conf file myself. So
probably, one of the samba updates changed the file, then the next
update could not work.

I cleared away all old samba logs, then ran the command apt-get install
samba. This gave the following messages:

I tried to go through the commands in /etc/init/nmbd.conf, and when I
tried the following lines it failed:
root@garfield:~# testparm -s --parameter-name='disable netbios'
