I've also encountered this I'm not positive that the sefaults are the
same, however, I disabled APC on 12.04 and the OPCache on 14.04 and the
servers have stopped segfaulting. Hopefully this helps!

ok I'm sure this is the same one as in the php.net report, I added a
work around shown here http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=49867#1281635073
and that resolves the issue.
I also checked with a compiled version of php5.3.6 and that doesn't have
the issue.

I can confirm the broken in 9.0.3-2ubuntu1 in 9.10 using the
2.6.31-305-ec2 kernel. Using 2.6.32 this problem doesn't exist.
