> features, especially one such as this one which appears to be mostly just a

Interestingly I forgot the point in time we are currently.

Yes, indeed, it's just a convenient way of adding WWIDs, however, its
importance lies if Ubuntu wants to enable its users to install
multipath-tools-boot (say, in a LVM/multipath scenario) to boot from
multipath.

If the root fs is locked due to a LVM volume, it cannot be multipathed, thus
its WWID won't be added to the list.
During boot, the only chance for the LVM volume to be mounted from the
multipath device is if the WWID is present (so the udev rule which removes the
partition block devices from individual paths can succeed).

So it's now a chicken and egg problem. You need to boot from multipath
in order to be able to multipath the device with the root fs LVM LV. :-)

With multipath -a, you can just install multipath-tools-boot, multipath -a
/dev/sdX, update-initramfs -u; done.
Without it, well, you can replace multipath -a for some multipath -v3 /dev/sdX
| grep 'uid =' | sed/awk >> /etc/multipath/wwids.. but you see, it doesn't look
quite 'this is how it should be done'.

Ryan,
congrats, well done. :-) I did an extended test with this multipathd/kpartx on
a z/VM guest and in LPAR overnight and it ran very well. Even after 300
"off/on" cycles all paths were "active ready running" at the end.
So, please go ahead with this. I will continue testing this when it is in
xenial/main, since some of my other tests rely on this.

I will close this defect when this fix is in xenial/main.

The s390 backport looks good for libseccomp 2.2.3-3. However this upstream
patch is missing:

commit d2ca11b7cdddbba3782b1e306ceacf19e898faee
Author: Heiko Carstens
Date: Mon Nov 9 13:15:39 2015 +0100

arch: update s390/s390x system call tables
s390 and s390x gained quite a few new system calls:
- numa related system calls
- the separated socket system calls
- two more s390 specific pci mmio system calls
All architectures got the new membarrier and userfaultfd system calls.

This patch updates the s390 specific system call tables and updates other
architectures where needed.

Also remove some extra whitespace from the s390 specific system call
tables.

Both 'make check' and './regression -T live' still work for s390 and s390x
after this update.

[Bug 1540401] Boot log with excerpts of systemd-udevd --debug

Adding an attachment (xz) of the boot log with systemd-udevd --debug running,
in order to verify the udev processing of the rules.

You may notice multipath -c is called several times only for
SUBSYSTEM==BLOCK devices, and partx -d is called only for the devices
part of a multpath device (ie, multipath -c has exit code 0).

Thank you Mauricio !!

I verified the same on PowerVM Lpar scenario, issue is fixed with
packages in -proposed :

root@miglp2:~# dpkg -l|grep multipath
ii multipath-tools0.4.9-3ubuntu7.10ppc64el
 maintain multipath block device access
ii multipath-tools-boot 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.10all
 Support booting from multipath devices

Lpar boots up with /boot :

Results show, that this combination does not harm, instead it solves the
subject problem, even after 100 cycles.

Ryan, but it's up to you what you are going to integrate to fix this

[Bug 1540407] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2016-02-29 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From thorsten.di...@de.ibm.com 2016-02-29 08:50 EDT---
Regarding the above strange behaviour in #5:
On a 4.4.0-8 system freshly installed (not updated from 4.4.0-7) with
libzfcphbaapi0 installed the paths are recoverd and re-added as expected, as
already described in case #2. And again, with case #1 the problem is
reproducable.

What is this libzfcphbaapi0 package doing undercover? Normally it has no
interatice with multipath daemon. Does it change anything in the
multipath configuration?

Adding the libzfcphbaapi0 package to prevent symptoms of this bug can
not be the solution and it might be just by chance, that the symptom
vanished. I talked to zfcp development, and they confirmed that.

As already promised, I will continue some long term tests (cable pull
and other path loosing scenarios) on a 4.4.0-8 system with multipath-
tools_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4 and kpartx_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4. Results
should be available by tomorrow.

Hi Ryan,

I followed your proposal, installed
multipath-tools_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4_s390x.deb as described, and it worked
fine and as expected, i.e. described problem does not occur.
On another system I installed both
multipath-tools_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4_s390x.deb and
kpartx_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4_s390x.deb - with the same result.
I did a detach/attach of the zfcp device and found, that it apperas for some
seconds in status active faulty running, then it changed to failed faulty
running and remained in that state until reattachment of the device. Then it
changed back to active ready running.

Hi Christian,

in addition I did the following tests:

1. On a freshly installed xenial (installer version 427, kernel 4.4.0-8) with
the already mentioned multipath.conf I found, that no zfcphbaapi stuff is
installed per default.
kernel 4.4.0-8
multipath-tools 0.5.0-7ubuntu15 (was 7ubuntu14 before) and kpartx
0.5.0-7ubuntu15
I did a detach/attach of the zfcp device and found, that it apperas for some
seconds in status active faulty offline, then it changed to failed faulty
offline and vanished and did not reappear upon reattachment of the device. I
had the zfcp LUNs configure manually (via sysfs)

2. Then I installed zfcp-hbaapi-utils_2.1.1-0ubuntu1_s390x.deb and
libzfcphbaapi0_2.1.1-0ubuntu1_s390x.deb on top. With these two
additional packages I could not reproduce this problem.

3. I installed a system with kernel 4.4.0-7 and multipath-tools
0.5.0-7ubuntu14 + the above mentioned zfcphbaapi stuff. Problem was
reproducable.

4. I updated that system to multipath-tools 0.5.0-7ubuntu15. Problem was
still reproducable.

5. I updated that system to kernel 4.4.0-8. It should be now similar to
case #2. But problem was still reproducable. strange.

6. I switched several times back and forth between multipath-tools
0.5.0-7ubuntu15 and multipath-tools_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4_s390x.deb.
With git1 it worked always, with 7ubuntu15 never. (although it did on a
freshly installed system, see #2)

So, for now we have two ways to solve/circumvent this problem:
a) use an updated multipath-tools package (from debian sid)
b) use an updated multipath-tools/kpartx packages from ubuntu (>= version
0.5.0-7ubuntu15) AND zfcp-hbaapi-utils_2.1.1-0ubuntu1_s390x.deb and
libzfcphbaapi0_2.1.1-0ubuntu1_s390x.deb on top. But that didn't help always
(see case #5 above)

I found different values for path_selector in multipath-tools versions of
ubuntu and debian:
ubuntu15: round-robin 0
debian-git: service-time 0
Then I set this in multipath.conf to the (usual) default "round-robin 0"
And with debian-git version the problem was still solved. So this setting
should not matter.

Ryan,
although obviously only fixes from multipath-tools_0.5.0+git1.656f8865-4 are
required to fix this problem, please consider and analyze, if it is better to
get the complete set of patches in both multipath-tools AND kpartx from debian
upstream (sid) instead of cherry picking some fixes.
The debian sid combination of multipath-tools AND kpartx does obviously not
harm and is already 6 weeks old.

Anyway, I will do some other test with this combination.

Ok. Thanks for the update.

If that helps, I've been testing that more manually, either installing
the packages at the end of the installation (cd /target/tmp && wget
<...>.deb && chroot /target dpkg -i /target/tmp/*.deb), or by installing
the packages after system is already installed (just manually fixing the
boot problem at initramfs time break=pre-multipath for example).

Regards.

--- Comment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2016-02-25 12:21 EDT---
Correction:

-packages at the end of the installation (cd /target/tmp && wget <...>.deb &&
-chroot /target dpkg -i /target/tmp/*.deb),

+packages at the end of the installation (cd /target/tmp && wget <...>.deb &&
+chroot /target dpkg -i /tmp/*.deb),

BTW, if you have a chance, it'd be nice to have a Trusty 'affects' row
for tracking purposes. Otherwise it seems this is already resolved
(despite your comment). Thanks.

Hi Canonical,

Please consider this patch V2 for review.

It includes 2 important changes:

- Built on top of the patches for multipathd/initramfs (LP #1526984) and kpartx

I could reproduce the problem in that scenario by using break=multipath in the
kernel cmdline
(which forces LVM udev rules to run before multipath discovery).

> I suppose it may be that I'm using a partitioning that happens to
work?

I'd expect it to fail in any case with LVM on top of multipath devices,
and LVM scan/volume activation happening before multipath discory
(root cause: LVM locking an individual path before multipath takes it).

That version is for 16.04 - it is already fix released/available in the
repository.

The version for 14.04.4 (something like 0.4.9-3ubuntu7.) is
not yet fix released/available.

There's no defined date for when it will be made available - but it is
in the list of multipath fixes that Canonical's team is aware of and
working on. Perhaps there will be single update w/ more than 1 bug
fixed.

There's likely a number of tasks on their side as well, and this one is
prioritized as Critical, so things should happen as best as possible.

[Bug 1526984] Support multipathd in the initramfs for async device discovery

2016-01-11 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment on attachment From mauri...@br.ibm.com 2016-01-11 07:58
EDT---

Hi Canonical @mathieu-tl,

This patch implements multipathd in the initramfs, and is reported to resolve
the problem
(tested by developer and test team for more than 10 reboots each).

It's on top of the patch in LP 1432062 comment 10 (requirement, since
multipathd -B might create devmaps w/ spaces in names).

Is it still in the window for 14.04.4?
Thanks!

The test described in the bug fails in Ubuntu 14.04.2.

The following packages were tried as well: libnuma1 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3
and numactl 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3

In all cases the test failed. The efix for 14.04.1 provided by Thierry
Fauck worked but it was not used in 14.04.02

Has this patch been accepted by maintainers? The Canonical status is fix
released. Is there a fix that should be pulled and tested?

--- Comment From mainam...@in.ibm.com 2015-03-19 05:43 EDT---
The test described in the bug fails in Ubuntu 14.04.2.

The following packages were tried as well: libnuma1 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3
and numactl 2.0.9~rc5-1ubuntu3

In all cases the test failed. The efix for 14.04.1 provided by Thierry
Fauck worked but it was not used in 14.04.02
