It might also be worth considering what users already use to monitor
their machines for updates, and to provide alerts by patching those
mechanisms. For example, we might SRU a patch to the check_apt nagios
plugin to pick up the EOL kernel state and present it as a warning or
 failure.

Depending on such an implementation (for example adding those feature
with a switch) we may include this patch in Debian.

Re: [Bug 1244713] Re: invalid syntax for check_ssh plugin

2013-10-27 Thread cyco
Wow, that was quick, good job guys =)

Until now, in Ubuntu nothing happened. This fix only exist in Debian
and needs to be merged and pushed into 13.10.
The Status changed to Fix Rleased cause lanchpad detected the
referenced Debian bug is marked as fixed.

Anyways ... the question is: Why didn't got the package fixed _before_
the release of 13.10 as the nagios-plugins 1.4.16-3 was uploaded to
Debian on 23th Aug, with just only bugfixes (one fixing a bug reported
in Ubuntu). This is a sign for a very bad release strategy in my eyes.

Re: [Bug 1203757] [NEW] nagios-plugin plugin check_icmp missing suid-bit after update

2013-07-23 Thread cyco
Am 22.07.2013 15:59, schrieb Bugrepoter:
update of the nagios-plugins removes the suid-bit from check_icmp. This

Sorry, this binaries don't have suid set. I guess you did change that on
your own. Maybe you should have a look into
/usr/share/doc/nagios-plugins-basic/README.Debian.gz:

plugins needing root privilege

the check_dhcp, check_icmp and maybe others plugins require root
privileges to
run, because of the low-level packet mangling that they perform.
but, in the interest of the safe default, these plugins will not
be installed with the suid bit set. there are two recommended ways
about overriding this on your system:

- set the suid bit with dpkg-statoverride:

# dpkg-statoverride --update --add root nagios 4750 $plugin

where $plugin is the specific plugin you want to grant such privileges.

- use sudo to grant the permissions and modify your plugin config

of these two, the first is recommended because it's the simplest and
has the same effect as the second.

breaks all host checks, since the nagios user can't ping any host
 without it.

The default configuration is to use check_ping for the host check.

Cheers, Jan.

[Bug 1031680] Re: check_apt always report 0 critical updates

2013-07-09 Thread cyco
Also an option is to port check_apt to use libapt-pkg[1]. This has the
advantage that libapt-pkg is providing a stable api and we don't need to
parse output of apt-get/aptitude.

The easiest way to get changes into upstream is to send pull
requests[2].

2013-06-28 Thread cyco
Sorry guys .. this ist _NOT_ a security issue (at least no one of
nagios-plugins).

Opening a but upstream might a good idea, but upstream doesn't work on
debian systems. So it's up to you guys to present (useful and senseful)
patches which might be adopted upstream.

If anybody want to rely on apt-check, you should spin off a separate
plugin and try to incorporate that into the nagios-plugins-contrib
package! Anyways ... nagios-plugins-contrib also provides
check_packages, maybe you give it a go.

Cheers, Jan (with Debian Nagios-Plugins Maintainers hat on).

2011-03-03 Thread cyco
On Thursday 03 March 2011 10:49:54 you wrote:
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

*lol* I can't see a vulnerability by installing samba packages, but
anyhow.

 Public security bug reported:

 Binary package hint: nagios-plugins

I have an internet server. I like to keep as little as possible
installed. A package as SAMBA' I simply do NOT want installed on my
server. It has no place there.

Now to get nagios to check my disk-free-status, I installed nagios-
plugins. This depends on samba-common and samba-common-bin. It
stopped short of starting the samba server.

What about installing just nagios-plugin-basic? nagios-plugins is also
depending[1] on nagios-plugins-standard which have (at least) on Ubuntu
couple of depencies[2], also on smbclient.

So, to monitor samba stuff, I imagine that having the samba tools
installed is required. But for my use this is not neccesary at all. This
sort of attitude causes software bloat. We/ubuntu should be careful in
what dependencies to mark as required.

Either split the nagios-plugins package into a nagios-plugins-samba, or
remove the dependency. In the latter case, you can make things neat by
editing the script that requires samba to print a nice: you need to
install samba if it isn't found.

In debian we have moved a bunch of dependencies to recommands with 1.4.14-2,
which gives you the possibilty to get rid of those packages by deinstalling
them or avoiding automatically installing recommanded packages. Anyhow ... the
ubuntu package has this changes reverted for an unknown reason.

Just my 2 cents, Jan.

The problem is that adding anything suhosin related to the php.ini
file does not seem to work.

Which php.ini file do you use and do you use libapache2-mod-php5 or cgi?
What about the following:

# echo suhosin.simulation = on /etc/php5/conf.d/suhosin.ini

Restarting the webserver and you will be fine.

[Bug 318703] Re: nagios check_smtp expects integer instead of double

2009-02-05 Thread cyco
Hi,

upstream stated the following:

The proper fix would rather be using the nagios thresholds functions. OTOH
it's more likely that we put time toward implementing the new thresholds
format than fixing plugins that were never converted to the old one.

Feel free to attach a working patch if you wish - we'll consider it
anyway. Otherwise a quick fix would rather be fixing the documentation.

Please provide further informations to launchpad and the upstreambug
too.

Thanks, Jan.

[Bug 315507] Re: Unable to remove Suhosin patch

2009-02-01 Thread cyco
Speaking as Debian Maintainer of the source package php-suhosin, I think you
didn't understand, what the package php5-suhosin stands for.
If you did have a look into the Upstream homepage[1], you can read the
following in the beginning of the page:

Suhosin comes in two independent parts, that can be used separately or
in combination. The first part is a small patch against the PHP core,
that implements a few low-level protections against bufferoverflows or
format string vulnerabilities and the second part is a powerful PHP
extension that implements all the other protections.

So we are talking about 2 different things php5-suhosin isn't the
equvalent to php5 with the suhosin patch, it is the package which ships the
suhosin (modul-) extension for PHP.
php5 is default patched with the suhosin patch by the Debian PHP Maintainers,
but this shouldn't harm you, cause it just provides logging functions, see [2].

If you what to get rid of the suhosin stuff you have serveral options.
Removing php5-suhosin is the most radical option. But you can also force
suhosin into simulation mode[3], which can be set global in PHP or local
(for example in vhost).

Thanks for your attention, Jan.
