Re: [Bug 728328] [NEW] nagios plugins depend on samba
On Thursday 03 March 2011 10:49:54 you wrote: *** This bug is a security vulnerability *** *lol* I can't see a vulnerability by installing samba packages, but anyhow. Public security bug reported: Binary package hint: nagios-plugins I have an internet server. I like to keep as little as possible installed. A package as SAMBA' I simply do NOT want installed on my server. It has no place there. Now to get nagios to check my disk-free-status, I installed nagios- plugins. This depends on samba-common and samba-common-bin. It stopped short of starting the samba server. What about installing just nagios-plugin-basic? nagios-plugins is also depending[1] on nagios-plugins-standard which have (at least) on Ubuntu couple of depencies[2], also on smbclient. So, to monitor samba stuff, I imagine that having the samba tools installed is required. But for my use this is not neccesary at all. This sort of attitude causes software bloat. We/ubuntu should be careful in what dependencies to mark as required. Either split the nagios-plugins package into a nagios-plugins-samba, or remove the dependency. In the latter case, you can make things neat by editing the script that requires samba to print a nice: you need to install samba if it isn't found. In debian we have moved a bunch of dependencies to recommands with 1.4.14-2, which gives you the possibilty to get rid of those packages by deinstalling them or avoiding automatically installing recommanded packages. Anyhow ... the ubuntu package has this changes reverted for an unknown reason. Just my 2 cents, Jan. [Bug 318703] Re: nagios check_smtp expects integer instead of double
Hi, upstream stated the following: The proper fix would rather be using the nagios thresholds functions. OTOH it's more likely that we put time toward implementing the new thresholds format than fixing plugins that were never converted to the old one. Feel free to attach a working patch if you wish - we'll consider it anyway. Otherwise a quick fix would rather be fixing the documentation. Please provide further informations to launchpad and the upstreambug too. [Bug 315507] Re: Unable to remove Suhosin patch
Speaking as Debian Maintainer of the source package php-suhosin, I think you didn't understand, what the package php5-suhosin stands for. If you did have a look into the Upstream homepage[1], you can read the following in the beginning of the page: Suhosin comes in two independent parts, that can be used separately or in combination. The first part is a small patch against the PHP core, that implements a few low-level protections against bufferoverflows or format string vulnerabilities and the second part is a powerful PHP extension that implements all the other protections. So we are talking about 2 different things php5-suhosin isn't the equvalent to php5 with the suhosin patch, it is the package which ships the suhosin (modul-) extension for PHP. php5 is default patched with the suhosin patch by the Debian PHP Maintainers, but this shouldn't harm you, cause it just provides logging functions, see [2]. If you what to get rid of the suhosin stuff you have serveral options. Removing php5-suhosin is the most radical option. But you can also force suhosin into simulation mode[3], which can be set global in PHP or local (for example in vhost). Thanks for your attention, Jan.
