Probably not. It would take a new install to truly replicate this and we've
moved on to 10.04 for most installs now! However reinstalling the nis
3.17-25ubuntu1 package on 9.10 works so I'd presume that a patch to some other
area has fixed the cause in passing.

Sorry, I forgot to put that in the case...
Ubuntu 9.10 with gnome / desktop and it's got the 'nis' package on it that is
described as 'client and daemons' so it's able to be a NIS slave server. However
nothing references it so it's acting purely as a client of the site's NIS
