Have you removed your /etc/mysql directory? I have done that to try to fix another problem related to installing mysql-server-5.6 after having installed (and subsequently removed) mariadb 10.0. However, the removal of that directory was done after removing the mysql-server package, so I was expecting that installing the package again would re-create it. It seems to have done that as I can see that directory in my system, however this error is still present. If you're at Lucid or Maverick, you can also create the rootfs img by running the attached rootstock script.
