Same problem, but installing Samba didn't change anything. Editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf didn't make any difference either (in my case the default line of send host-name hostname; was present, if I changed it to send the actual host name that didn't make any difference). -- dhcp3-client does

Check /etc/nsswitch.conf - look for the line starting hosts: If it doesn't include the value wins, add it. The line on my machine is hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 wins Then restart networking or reboot. -- dhcp3-client does not send hostname

Same problem for me. I've got a Desktop and a Notebook installed with Hardy, both showing the described problem. Editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf (hostname) doesn't make any difference. My setup differs a little bit from the above: I'm running Hardy with the 2.6.24-16-generic kernel. My router is
