Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. I'm glad you wer eable to work around it quickly. Note that /etc/default/fetchmail came with START_DAEMON=no, but that was changed to 'yes' on your system. While I agree that having to workaround just to remove a package is not a resolution, I would like to point out that this bug was filed over a year ago.
