Public bug reported: This is not a bug, but actually a compile + publish request.
Let me explain myself: If you see the original software changelog: https://security.appspot.com/vsftpd/Changelog.txt, the following check was added in 2.3.5: - Add stronger checks for the configuration error of running with a writeable root directory inside a chroot(). This may bite people who carelessly turned on chroot_local_user but such is life. This provokes that if a writeable root for a chroot exists, it will fail to log in with this message: 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable root inside chroot () If you look further in that changelog, in 3.0 version a key config for vsftpd.conf has been included that allows to set a writeable chroot: - Add new config setting "allow_writeable_chroot" to help people in a bit of a spot with the v2.3.5 defensive change. Only applies to non-anonymous. This is the situation up to now in precise and quantal (raring and saucy already include this 3.0 version) in both i386 and amd64. So this request is asking the package mantainer about the possibility of upgrading the precompiled package from 2.3.5 to 3.0 in precise distribution) Thanks a lot ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: vsftpd 2.3.5-1ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-41.66-generic 3.2.42 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-41-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu17.2 Architecture: amd64 Date: Thu May 2 14:50:03 2013 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120823.1) MarkForUpload: True ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=es_ES.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: vsftpd UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: vsftpd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug precise running-unity -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vsftpd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1175589 Title: Precise vsftp precompiled package upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vsftpd/+bug/1175589/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
