imagino que o problema seja devido ao instalar uma placa de video. 
fiz uma instalação limpa com atualizações durante o processo.
após a insalação apliquei dois comandos. update e após upgrade do apt-get. 
travou o pc e eu o reiniciei. Quando retornou estava na resolução 800X600. 
reiniciei e em modo de recuperação e apliquei para reperar dependencias 
quebradas, se não me engano. apos reconfigurar, a resolução voltou.
