Same problem, but installing Samba didn't change anything. Check /etc/nsswitch.conf - look for the line starting hosts: If it doesn't include the value wins, add it. Same problem for me. I've got a Desktop and a Notebook installed with Hardy, both showing the described problem. Editing /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf (hostname) doesn't make any difference. My setup differs a little bit from the above: I'm running Hardy with the 2.6.24-16-generic kernel. My router is a Fritzbox 7050, which is very common in Germany.
