Could you try to purge the mysql-server-5.0 package instead of just removing it? Just removing the package will leave the mysql configuration around (/etc/mysql/my.cnf) which will not be reinstalled when mysql-server-5.0 will be installed. -- /etc/mysql/my.cnf cannot be read

I can attest to having the same problem; using 8.10. In my case, I installed sudo apt-get install mythtv, (which installed mysql-server correctly). But I removed mythtv soon after install (as I screwed up one of the options picked during install). After successive tries to (re) install mythtv
