I tried the above commands and got:

Sorry - I don't think this is a bug after all. I had deleted the entire
/etc/samba folder thinking that a re-install would recreate it but it
obviously doesn't. It appears to be falling over when it tries to open
the config file. Sorry for being such an idiot but could you tell me how
recreate

Looks like the Samba daemon couldn't start. Could you post the relevant
lines from /var/log/syslog or /var/log/samba/* ?
