postfix fails to install with invalid hostnames or domain names

package postfix 2.5.5-1 failed to install/upgrade: invalid hostname
Hi,
I changed the hostname and ran apt-get install postfix and
sudo dpkg-reconfigure postfix
but it didn't fix the problem. it seems that I need to remove the broken
installation first!?
how?
Please advise.
