Resolving the bind Address in /etc/mysql/my.cnf solved the problem

I've solved this issue on my machine. My bind-address was set
incorrectly, so I just went in and changed it to my loopback address.
# /etc/mysql/my.cnf
bind-address = 127.0.0.1
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart
worked like a charm.
