Next step would be to try to make your network configuration in WICD/NM be available to all users (a.k.a. system settings), see if it makes network available sufficiently early for first login to succeed. Tried with static IPs this morning: it works as expected with both NM/wicd. First login works and there is not need to wait any time. Not sure if this is relevant, but windows dhcp server has school configured as domain name, even if the doc made on purpose states that domain should be school.net.
