Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba
Kubuntu maverick, packages updated daily. When upgrading to samba version 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu7, the prerm script for said package hangs, and the upgrade process is blocked from proceeding to other packages. Grepping the process table for 'samba' and 'smb', there is a persistent entry for 'stop smbd' as well as an entry for the prerm script. The smbd daemon itself was not listed as running. root 24211 0.0 0.0 4148 576 pts/6 S+ 15:25 0:00 /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba.prerm upgrade 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu7 root 24214 0.0 0.0 21408 876 pts/6 S+ 15:25 0:00 stop smbd Attempting to run 'sudo stop smbd' from another terminal only yielded the following; stop: Job has already been stopped: smbd Killing the 'stop smbd' process with 'sudo kill <pid>' allowed the upgrade to proceed. I'm attaching a log of the aptitude upgrade process, with a small comment where it froze.
