2012-03-03 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi! This seems like it has gone untouched for a while. I'm not sure what
we can do to address it. The apparmor profile would not result in a
killed by signal, and AFAIK, works for the default install and upgrade
case.

I'm going to mark this as incomplete, since I don't think there is
enough information here to reproduce the issue. If somebody has some
more info to help us find a way to reproduce the issue, please add it
here and mark the bug as New again.

2011-05-10 Thread MarkieB
Hi David,

it looks as though possibly there's some error in the 'magic' of the
package maintainer's version of

/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld

that is unresolved as of mysql-server-5.1_5.1.49-1ubuntu8.1_amd64.deb

so try to substitute the 'original version' as in attachment

[Bug 666383] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 failed to install/upgrade: [SRU] infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running

2011-01-05 Thread IAmDaveMyers
Hello again all,

Any news on the tracking of this bug?

anything I can do to test the function of an upstart script? I would be
able to help out in terms of testing of the upstart script etc.

I am wondering if this is an issue due to installing from source on the
original instal - I obviously decided to do things the hard way!

I do have a 'server system' running on another box, and I don't believe
that I have the same problems on that box (I only just realised this
system was runnning mysql).

Why however, after removing mysql from my system, then re-installing
from the repo's do I still have a problem?

Anything I can do to investigate?

Clean install?? If I do this I would need to copy my tables over to
another external HDD (not a problem), however I like to try to keep my
solutions to problems 'simple' and for a general user this may be a
something they may not want to do - that being said anyone running a
full blown server system most likely has the experience to know what
they are doing so it probably wouldn't be a problem for them.

Has anyone confirmed this problem on another system as still being in
existance? if it is truly just my strange system setup, and a clean
install is the recomended solution, then clean install it will be.

please tell me what I can do to help out, so as I can actually 'help
out'

David

[Bug 666383] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 failed to install/upgrade: [SRU] infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running

2010-11-08 Thread IAmDaveMyers
Quick update.

Can confirm that the installation from source is running as expected.

Please note that if you are going to do this you need to find the folder
where your tables are kept (look into /usr/local/mysql/ data or they may
appear somewhere in a subfolder of /var/ ~ probably a personal setting.

a quick run down of what you need to bear in mind.

- make sure you have all your old data tables saved somewhere, and a
copy of your old my.cnf

- if you are running some systems (eg drupal) they look for the mysql.sock file
in a different location (ie not /tmp/mysql.sock) so you will need to create a
symbolic link to the file for them to work, I assume that in the deb install /
upgrade this not an issue?

- As you are installing from source you will need to insert mysql into
/etc/init.d/ if you want it to run on boot up.

- to do this you need to run the following commands...

get chkconfig, as it isn't included in the newer version, as they are using
upstart and not system-v init.d things.
   sudp apt-get install chkconfig

the server start up script needs to be in the correct location...

   sudo cp /usr/local/mysql/mysql.server /etc/mysql

now you can insert mysql into the init.d

   sudo chkconfig --add mysql

and tell the server to run mysql at boot

   sudo update-rc.d mysql defaults

You will get error messages about the script now being an upstart job.

This worked for me, hope it works for someone else also...

I've put this procedure on the ubuntu forums ~
http://ubuntuforums.org/newreply.php?do=newreplynoquote=1p=9951303
so if there are any questions / changes, please contact me there, here, or via
pm.

[Bug 666383] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 failed to install/upgrade: [SRU] infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running

2010-11-03 Thread IAmDaveMyers
Can confirm that a install from source works fine (following instruction
on the MySQL site / docs)

Only bother is that when moving the automatic startup script into
/etc/init.d/ I get a warning about the job now being in upstart, will
this cause me any problems?

Question is, how do the scripts differ?

I understand that at the start there is a 'loop' that waits for the
network interface to come up, and a few other things.

I believe that the Mysql server startup script doesn't run until the
system reaches 'run level 3'.

I'm not fully conversant with the use of upstart (but I do understand
the idea). If there is any further info I can give I will be happy to
help.

ps. I am also available to do an install from an RPM - if there is an
'upstart' version being packaged.

Also as this seems to be a 'regression' I am happy to try the 'old' .deb
installers so see which one of worked, eliminating untill we find where
we all got it so horribly wrong, but I only seem able to find the
'current' version.

similar to this one...

I have put a note on the end of that bug, and the respose was that I
should open a new bug, but rather than do that I feel I should just
extend the info in this one.

this is the info I put in that posting...

My concern is that this is the LTS version. As always I am upgrading
after the version has been out for a while, in the expectation that
problems like these would not occur.

My initial upgrade from 8.04 broke MySQL, and stopped my local test
versions for a number of test web sites (drupal) and a test
implementation of Sugar CRM I had going.

I assume that there is a similar problem in the 10.04 LTS server edition
also ? if so that will be bad new for someone!

I hope someone out there is able to regress the 'fix released'
notification, or at least confirm that my problems are not specific to
my setup.

I followed m2nis' details on post 23 for removing my old mysql
instalation (or rather I renamed the directories so as to retain my data
tables), then I did the following

___
su mysql service mysql start
start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type=method_call,
sender=:1.50 (uid=112 pid=20679 comm=start)
interface=com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job member=Start error name=(unset)
requested_reply=0 destination=com.ubuntu.Upstart (uid=0 pid=1
comm=/sbin/init))
___

then so as to confirm that it is indeed not running...

___
ps aux|grep mysql
root 20762 0.0 0.1 3328 784 pts/0 S+ 22:40 0:00 grep mysql
___

During my upgrade (which I performed stepwise through the versions, as I wasn't
being given the option to go directly from 8.04 to 10.04?) I was prompted to
file a bug report about mysql, here is the link to it
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mysql-dfsg-5.1/+bug/666383

The reason I think this is in fact somehow all related is because my
var/log/syslog ouptut looks remarkable similar to the original posters

I am now going to try implementing the changes as suggested above, to
see if that solves my problem

___end quote ___

[Bug 666383] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6 failed to install/upgrade: [SRU] infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running

2010-10-28 Thread IAmDaveMyers
So I've tried the following.

On the other bug thread there was a fix released to the repositories,
this was the version I was downloading /installing.

As this was failing, I removed all the Mysql stuff.

___
sudo apt-get remove mysql-server-5.1
sudo apt-get purge mysql-server-5.1
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean
___

removed the directories it creates (/etc/mysql, /var/lib/mysqld,
/var/run/mysqld, /var/log/mysql)

and the init file (/etc/init/mysql.conf)
___

Now I tried to install the version from the ppa that was mentioned on
bug#551130 post15

Again I had the same problem of mysql not starting, so either the fix
has been regressed, or I'm doing something wrong. I go for me doing
something wrong ;)

So back to removing all of that, and re-installing the stuff from the
repositories - so I now have a standard 'install' that most poeple would
have.

I'm now going to follow the required changes as laid out in post 16 of
the other thread will report back on success / failure of this
procedure.
