resubscribed it to the bug, hopefully the upload will be accepted soon.

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2013-01-04 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Troy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted seabios into lucid-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seabios/0.5.1-0ubuntu2.1 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

2011-09-16 Thread mahmoh
@Serge, better late than never but this is still a problem in Lucid
(10.04.3 release) and the seabios_0.5.1-0ubuntu2.1~ppa2_all.deb
(https://launchpad.net/~dev-
nigelj/+archive/bugtest/+files/seabios_0.5.1-0ubuntu2.1%7Eppa2_all.deb)
from above allows 2008R2SP1 to boot and install with 16 CPUs. I haven't
tested it thoroughly past boot and install but I can if you feel it's
necessary/critical; otherwise, please SRU this fix for Lucid.

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-11-16 Thread Serge Hallyn
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: qemu-kvm
+
+ ==
+ SRU justification:
+
+ Type of bug: 'D' (Bugs which do not fit under above categories, but (1)
+ have an obviously safe patch and (2) affect an application rather than
+ critical infrastructure packages (like X.org or the kernel). )
+
+ Impact: users cannot start windows with 4 or more vCPUs
+ Fix: The bug is fixed in maverick because it was fixed upstream.
+ Patch: The patch which fixed the bug upstream is not in lucid, and is
+ separated out here in comment #10
+ To Reproduce: 'kvm -hda windows.img -smp 6'
+ Regression potential: Users affected by the bug have been using the fix from
+ Nigel's ppa with no ill effects. If there are regressions, they should be
+ only in seabios/qemu-kvm users.
+
+ ==

Windows Server 2008 is loading fine in KVM on my computer when I
allocate 4 vCPUs to it (on an 8 core host). When I allocate 5 or more,
it blue-screens at start with an error about the ACPI capabilities with
a suggestion to update the machine bios.

I don't see reports of this error anywhere else, but its 100%
  reproducible on my system :(

bios.bin (0.6.0-0ubuntu1) file on Lucid on a 16 cpu (2/4/2) system
without a problem. I could not boot more than 4 cpus before with
Lucid's seabios (0.5.1-0ubuntu2).

Working configuration:

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-09-17 Thread mahmoh
Clarification:

... I could not boot more than 4 cpus ... meant that I hit the BSOD
with Stop A5 (ACPI) when I tried, so it did boot but just didn't get as
far as I hoped.

Excellent work, and thank you Nigel!!!

I just added your PPA to our dual quad-processor system, and
successfully booted a Server 2008 VM with 6 vcpus attached. Everything
appears to be working well, and I'll be leaving the PPA in please until
it's SRU'd or the next LTS comes out.

Thanks for the testing Troy.

Just attaching the individual patch from the debdiff for now, I'll check
w/ the Server Team regarding getting this as an SRU.

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-27 Thread Nigel Jones
I've had a bit more of a look...

I have been experimenting w/ Windows 2008 64-bit original release
installing the Enterprise edition.

Lucid ships with seabios 0.5.1-0ubuntu2 which experiences the issue.
Maverick ships with seabios 0.6.0-0ubuntu1 which from my testing doesn't.

I did a quick rebuild of 0.6.0-0ubuntu1 for Lucid, and I can boot a 5
vCPU Enterprise VM okay, which I couldn't before.

So it looks like the issue is somewhere upstream between Jan 2010 and
early July 2010...

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-27 Thread Nigel Jones
I isolated fix to upstream patch
http://git.linuxtogo.org/?p=kevin/seabios.git;a=blobdiff;f=src/acpi.c;h=244536a276ae360f016e58b2eefaee83654abd75;hp=f613b034120d3595f9e9c4104acffbeae8dbd228;hb=3012af189e0f89bd33df1c0711a46f098053e9a7;hpb=92a5742b5f9f217ba6315fa13d075ba98ebc3fd6

If someone wants to test it to verify the fix, I've built a PPA package
with the bug fix at https://launchpad.net/~dev-
nigelj/+archive/bugtest/+packages, and find attached a SRU ready debdiff
that includes the upstream patch, plus adds quilt/dpkg-source V3 (quilt)
requirements to match Maverick.

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-27 Thread Nigel Jones
I was going to try and get hold of Dustin via IRC, but I wasn't able to.

I'm not sure how this package fits into the Server SRU picture, and I'm
not really in a position to call how safe an ACPI change like this on
it's own is (although, this was the first of only a few that I can tell
between 0.5.1 0.6.0 that upstream performed, so I'd hazard a guess
that it is safe.

I really thing it deserves some testing/oversight from separate eyes
before it even goes into -proposed etc.

In addition I don't have a box w/ more than 4 cores, I was reproducing
the issue by over-committing CPU resources, so I think it really needs
to be tested on more server-ish type hardware.

I can confirm this is an issue in Lucid w/ qemu-kvm 0.12.3+noroms-

Microsoft Kbase has a little bit of details of specifically is likely to
be wrong, at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314830 (browse down to

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-08-13 Thread oli
I have this exact same problem. I read of something very similar on this forum
that it was a bug in the KVM BIOS and that a fix was coming, but I haven't seen
a fix yet.
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.kvm.devel/46671

It occurred to me that perhaps it is a Windows 2008 Standard limitation since
it will only run on 4 sockets:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/r2-compare-specs.aspx

Does anyone know if the KVM CPUs show up in Windows at separate sockets
instead of cores?

[Bug 589063] Re: Windows Server 2008 won't boot with more than 4 vCPUs

2010-06-15 Thread Troy Ready
Anyone else able to reproduce this bug? I just checked and made sure I
had the latest BIOS version for the motherboard, and I do.

I'm not sure how I can help debug this -- I presume its a KVM issue, but
am I wrong? Is it the system passing along bad ACPI info directly to the
VM?

I would just blame Windows, but there wasn't any problems under Hardy,
so even if it's a Windows bug it's a regression for Ubuntu.
