Apart from what already was pointed out, that many, if not most ISPs
are shaping torrent traffic, it could happen that all seeders go
offline, before you downloaded the image. Another thing that should be
considered is, that the torrent etiquette postulates, that after you
downloaded the image, you should seed it to a minimum ratio of 1.
Nobody likes people who just download by torrent and then go offline.
People doing this are antisocial. If you download, you also must seed
and it should be more, than just a ratio of 1.

There are good reasons for torrent, but if download speed is important,
torrent is the absolutely wrong way to go.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi All, I'm looking for a
FAST FTP server to download the latest image from. Every ftp mirror of
"studio" I've found is either just plain slow (most appear to be
throttled down to 265k. Arrgh...), or they burst, then die. Can anyone
shoot me the url for a server they've verified will transfer at 2meg+?

You are welcome!

Ralf

PS:

Next time if an issue is solved, please, at least use the same subject
and add a [solved], so you help other users with the same problem to
find help in the archive by using a search engine.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-studio-users/
http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.user.ubuntu-studio

If you want to reply to the digest, consider to switch to MIME digest,
then not only the subject is preserved, but also the "thread" (it's in
the email headers and allows your mailer to sort mails that belong to
each other).

Log in, and switch from plain text to MIMI

That's correct, but there's a pitfall regarding the signature.

However, here is explained, how to do it

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto

The checksum ensures that the ISO isn't broken due to e.g. errors
arising in the transmission of the download, the signing ensures that
the ISO is from Ubuntu and not a virulent fake from somebody else.
BUT as long as the Ubuntu signature isn't part of your chain of trust

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_of_trust

you can _not_ rely on it, if you download the ISO from an unofficial
source. Actually, when downloading from

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/xenial/beta-1/

it is risky either and requires that the Ubuntu key is part of your
chain of trust.

Too funny that the help page and Wiki are https, but the ISO download
page is a http page.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPS

So again, WARNING, the signed checksum only provides security, if you
know that the key really belongs to the alleged owner. If you didn't
met the owner of the key in the real world, you can trust that the key
belongs to the owner, only by a web of trust.

A https page might not be perfect, but would be much better than the
current http page.

What version, 32, 64 bit?

My connection isn't very good, but the downloads do not burst on me.
Back when my connection was good, i had no such throttled problems.

Here is the list of all the ISO-releases:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/

If you use any other source than the ones provided by the website,
_Make sure you do a checksum before you install_

Good luck!

[ubuntu-studio-users] FTP Download

2016-03-12 Thread Edward A Schober
How about downloading using the torrent link? I, for one, host the
AMD64 version along with other useful torrents like LibreOffice and Knoppix.

You need to update the files once in a while if you want to maintain a
useful torrent server, but it is otherwise painless.

Torrents go much faster.
