My friend had a maybe similar problem.... plugged external speakers into their laptop which worked fine, but suddenly the onboard no-longer worked.

Figured it was a hardware fault, sent the laptop off and they agreed and repaired it.

Alas, there are no sound cards listed in the Sound Preferences... :-(

But I did plug some headphones in a couple of weeks ago... could have
been a factor... don't remember when precisely after that the sound
disappeared. Worked fine on the headphones, mind you.
