I have a Nokia 9500, and to view any office-type files I have to save
them as MS formats, which the Nokia software then converts to its format.
Hopefully in the future Nokia phones will be able to use open formats
like those used in OpenOffice.

If you're just talking about copying and pasting text, then
absolutely... It's ctrl+shift+c and ctrl+shift+v in gnome-terminal -
or alternatively highlight text with the mouse and use the middle
mouse button to paste (which also works with anything else in
gnome...not sure about kde!)

Did you install OpenOffice from a ppa or the repositries? As far as I know
anything installed from a ppa isn't affected by the normal upgrade process,
so as long as your OOo is from a ppa you should be okay :)
