NTFS isn't totally compatible with ext3, one good example being the inability to store a filename with ":", for obvious reasons. There are quite a few applications that have data files with ":" in their names, such Evolution, Nautilus and quite a few man pages. It would be wise to reformat the NTFS drive first.
