I've found another workaround. Running 'sudo nvidia-xconfig' creates a clean
xorg.conf file that the nvidia-settings app can parse.
Somehow it just doesn't like the default xorg.conf that's distributed with

Problem got marginally better when using kernel 2.6.30-020630-generic.
However, outputting to VGA output is still unbearable with compiz on.
Xrandr works perfectly when compiz is off.
Any hope for Karmic?

Is this an appropriate place to ask the counter-question, I thought
ubuntu was trying to get away from xorg.conf, and that's why the new
conf looks like a dummy file.

There's no way knowing the last working value.. Edit your xorg.conf
Since it occurred after upgrading the kernel, and updating to a newer
kernel snapshot fixed it, that seems to indicate this is a kernel issue,
not -intel. This bug can probably be closed once a newer version than
that git id is uploaded.

Thanks, looks like this has all the info needed to send this upstream,
however could you test one more thing before we send it up? Please
install the latest update for -intel on karmic and verify it still is
not fixed there (it has some improvements for dual-head cases):

What seems to be going on here is that the video is being sent to your
(phantom) VGA port instead of LVDS.
Are you able to correct it by doing this?
In Section Device add the line:
Option monitor-LVDS VGA
Then add the following new section:
