I have a theory as for why acpi=off works, but not nomodeset or "DRI" "off". As far as I remember, the xorg.conf option "DRI" "off" is ignored when KMS is used (cf. comment # 6, DRI is responsible for KMS, so it does not make sense to turn it off). So what acpi=off does is probably to disable DRI,

Update: Tested the solution from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8341194 not satisfying. Vol+/- keys do not cause notify-osd to do wild flickering anymore but multiple key presses (raise/lower volume by 2 or more steps) are not possible anymore. Maybe the problem is not the xserver?
