I have the same problem with a Viglen P4 desktop. It crashed every time
I started VirtualBox. I tried the ppa, and things are slightly better
now (I can run VirtualBox), but I still get a crash or freeze every once
in a while.

I just had a lock and I did try SSHing into the system without a
problem. It seems that X only crashed. Top wasn't reporting anything
unusual. I looked at .xsession-erros with nothing of any value other

Radeon HD 3450, dual monitors by using System->Preferences->Monitors,

1. Navigate to "System" > "Preferences" > "Keyboard" > "Layouts" >
"Options" > "Caps Lock key behavior".
The heading correctly spells it "Caps Lock". But 13 of the 14 options
inside misspell it as "Cap
My gnome session kept crashing using the nouveau driver when
surfing the web with a high graphic content site. After researching, I
decided to use the proprietary drivers from Nvidia. After installing
those drivers, I could not start a X session (gdm), I would get the
"white screen of death"

using setxkbmap with different mappings silently fills in /var/lib/xkb
with xkm files
when are these files purged !! ?

setxkbmap fills in /var/lib/xkb
Workaround/fix:
create a fill called /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-vga16fb.conf and write
the following in it
blacklist vga16fb
update-initramfs -u
