A bit off-topic to my previous comment: The PPA version of the intel driver did not make any difference, however, the bluetooth causes the system hang before or after suspend if it is enabled. I did not mind too much just disabled the bluetooth in the Bios. Now, the system seems to be stable. --

For future refence, this is an optimus system and you are using the intel GPU even though both GPU's are on at the same time. Installing the nvidia binary drivers breaks 3D for the Intel leading to the 2D desktop after. The images shipped with these systems for lenovo worked around this by a

It almost always happens for me during start up when the purple background with the Ubuntu logo and the dots underneath it. I can get into a virtual terminal by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1. I have it set to automatically login as a user. If I log in with Ubuntu Classic it seems to fix this. [
