As far as I know, all drivers for amd64 contain proper 32-bit compatibility
binaries to run 32-bit programs.
Win32 programs in Wine, and Google Earth, which both run through ia32-libs on
amd64 systems, cannot use Nouveau 3D
Someone has posted a patch that fixes this issue on the intel-gfx
mailing list and it should hopefully be in 3.0-rc4. afterwards we will
be able to cherry-pick it into stable. I have test kernels available
here that fix the issue, with the side effect of also massively speeding
up 3D with the defau

It's actually very strange. Here are my results:
* If I boot with nomodeset, there is no flickering but I cannot use any
external display (my monitor appears in X.log but not seen by xrandr)
* If I boot without nomodeset (and with xorg-edgers ppa) with my external VG

Never had much problems with previous Ubuntu's, but with 11.04,
somethings were just not right. Maybe because they are transitioning

I get the very same behavior on my lenovo X200s using current 11.04. I
am not sure if Xorg is the problem. It might be Unity.
I got the impression that it appears less since I disabled screensaver
and screen locking mechanism.

Check that you installed the right driver for your architecture (32 or
64 bit) and that you have copied a fresh xorg.conf as the one in my
pages. The code for the drivers in 10.04 is slightly different from the
one I use now, but what you describe seems to point to some oddity in
xorg.c

Looking at the Xorg.conf, I've noticed that you use 'vesa' as the graphics
driver. That's probably why the HDMI output doesn't work. Take a look at the
Poulsbo wiki page on how to install the driver.
