Oneiric, all packages up to date as of 2011-09-05, 3.0.0-10-generic on a
Toshiba Satellite C650D, using proprietary fglrx graphics driver.
Closing the lid of the laptop puts the machine into hibernate. Opening
the lid, the display flickers on and off, but never returns.
This happens for me on Maverick with Vmware Workstation 7.1.4
build-385536. Sometimes, I don't notice it's a problem (say, I'm working
in the VM where the keys still work fine), I go away for a while, the
screensaver activates and I find I'm unable to enter my password. I have
to kill

All I needed to do was a HARD RESET to the system which consisted of
pulling out all power sources and holding down the power button for a
single minute straight and then reconnecting and turning on
