11.04 that with the open source driver most games with 3D graphics are
unplayable - even something like SuperTuxKart. So I'd rather have

fglrx driver. With this driver uninstalled, I had problems with Unity

Lightdm does not start with
I've tried all nvidia drivers, including direct downloads from the
website. Nothing works. I haven't tried installing gdm and using that
instead, however. May be worth a shot.
Right now I'm using nouveau with experimental 3D support, which works
for basic things, but not for my OpenGL development
tested with latest mainstream kernel 3.1.0-999-generic #201108310919 SMP
Wed Aug 31 10:33:14 UTC 2011 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux to no avail.
With 3.1.0 kernel X doesn't start at all:

Since the bug was introduced in 2.6.35 it's interesting that Saybon
works without issues. Is it doing something different? Perhaps trying to
