ATI Radeon HD3650 / Intel i915 combo on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500. Kubuntu
10.04, 10.10, 11.04 all worked with this hardware and both the free
fglrx and the proprietary fglrx.
When I upgraded to 11.10, I did a wipe/reinstall combo of /root (kept
only /home). Now proprietary and free fglrx both do n
same problem here.

10.10. It started after a kernel update, but that might not be relevant.
Motherboard is Abit AV8, Radeon 9600 graphics.

I actually got it working under Steffen's instructions:
Purge fglrx, install the debs generated. Re-boot into recovery (to avoid screen
blank) and then resume normal boot.
This makes nearly everything look smooth. The fonts sometimes are
blurred and in italic on hover,

I have the same laptop (Dell Latitude D430) as Bobik-s and am
experiencing what appears to be the same problem with a fresh install of
, so I'll add some more information.
I tried adding the following kernel boot parameters one-by-one:
acpi_backlight=vendor,
acpi_backlight=video
dell_laptop.backl
not sure if bug #878859 is similar, it claims shift-lefclick on the
menus leads to pointer locking

Of course I did, actually I tried all of the four versions Hardware
Drivers proposed. I've been experiencing this bug since six months at
least, since when I updated to 11.04. Now I'm running 11.10 but nothing
has changed.
