It doesn't matter which desktop environment is used (unity, gnome, xfce), it's
the video driver that's causing the problem. Sometimes it gets so bad, I
couldn't do any work. So I switched back to 10.04. If it is the same for you,
I'd suggest you switch back as well.

Live CD enabled a large range of resolutions support by my graphics card
and monitor. Following the install, a single resolution (1280x1024) is
available in Displays.
My graphics card doesn't appear to be recognised reliably;

I recently got an update from xorg-video-intel and it seems to work
using an external monitor at home. I have another external monitor at
work, so i'll test it further tomorrow.

another reason we need to be able to run a separate X server. Is that
the nvidia driver doesn't allow rotating of just one screen in a
twinview setup.
